The reliable test boundary is the exact Markdown string, parser version, dialect, and options used in production—not the converter alone.
Why converter tests can pass while parsed Markdown loses structure
HTML-to-Markdown conversion and Markdown parsing are separate stages. A converter can emit output that looks plausible, and tests can confirm that expected words are present, without establishing whether another component will recognize headings, nested lists, tables, or line breaks as intended.

Markdown has both block structure and inline interpretation. CommonMark specifies that block parsing takes precedence over inline parsing, so whitespace and line boundaries that seem cosmetic in a string comparison can affect how the parser groups content. The title does not identify the converter, parser, versions, input, or output, so no single cause can be established for this failure.

Test the semantic result at the boundary: give the production parser the exact Markdown that reaches it, then inspect the resulting structure or rendered HTML. A successful parse, or a string containing all the right words, is not proof that the document retained its intended relationships.

What can change the meaning of the output
Whitespace, indentation, and newlines
Whitespace is not always interchangeable. CommonMark treats tabs as four-column tab stops in structural contexts, where indentation can affect code blocks and list nesting; internal tabs can remain literal. A converter or a later processing step that collapses whitespace, strips newlines, wraps lines, or trims boundaries can therefore change more than appearance.
For one illustrative example—not an identification of the converter in this case—the html-to-markdown Python API documentation describes a whitespace_mode setting. Its Normalized mode is the default and collapses consecutive whitespace; Strict preserves source whitespace. The documentation says normalized output is cleaner for most documents, while strict mode is appropriate when deliberate whitespace outside <pre> matters. It also documents strip_newlines and optional wrapping at word boundaries. Check the actual converter’s settings and every transformation after conversion before attributing a problem to parser strictness.

Soft breaks versus hard breaks
A Markdown line ending can represent a soft break, which CommonMark permits a renderer to display either as a line ending or as a space. If the content requires a visible hard break, do not rely on a source newline alone: assert the intended result using the syntax and behavior supported by the production dialect and renderer.

CommonMark defines block HTML handling separately from ordinary Markdown blocks, and its rules differ from the original Markdown description. A raw block such as a <table> or <div> can affect how surrounding Markdown is interpreted; spacing and indentation around it may matter. The CommonMark specification also cautions that pasted HTML blocks are not reliable in every case. Test raw HTML boundaries when they appear in the real document rather than assuming every parser treats the mixture alike.

Dialect and extension differences
“Markdown” is not a complete parser specification. CommonMark, GitHub Flavored Markdown, and library-specific dialects can differ, and extensions such as table support matter only if the target parser enables them. Run tests with the production parser’s actual version, dialect, and options; a test against a different dialect may validate behavior the application never uses.
A diagnostic sequence that isolates the failing layer
- Preserve the input. Save the original HTML fixture byte-for-byte. Record the converter name and version, its settings, and the intended Markdown format.
- Capture the parser input. Save the exact Markdown string passed downstream. Compare it with the converter output to find changes from trimming, whitespace collapse, newline removal, wrapping, serialization, or transport.
- Reproduce production parsing. Feed that exact string to the exact parser version and dialect used in production. Record the parser’s AST or rendered HTML, not merely whether parsing returned successfully.
- Reduce the fixture. Remove unrelated content until the smallest HTML input that still flattens remains. Then test relevant features separately: deliberate whitespace, tabs, nested lists, line breaks in table cells, and raw block HTML.
- Check parser conformance where applicable. The CommonMark project README says its specification contains over 500 embedded examples that can be run against an executable parser. These examples test parser conformance; they do not prove that a converter preserves the semantics of a particular HTML document.
- Add a paired regression test. Keep the source HTML, expected Markdown structure, and expected parsed result together. Exercise both conversion and downstream parsing so future tests cover the seam where the failure occurred.
- Change one layer at a time. Try a converter setting, post-processing change, parser dialect or option, or fixture correction separately. Avoid making the output look right by silently deleting whitespace that carries meaning.

What the available evidence does—and does not—establish
CommonMark Spec 0.26 provides the normative examples above, but it is an older specification version. Confirm the dialect and version supported by the parser in question before applying version-specific details. The converter documentation describes one library’s options; it does not show that this library produced the output in the title.

No failure rate or benchmark establishes how often this kind of mismatch occurs. The exact converter, parser, versions, HTML fixture, emitted Markdown, and observed result are unspecified, so the root cause remains unresolved. The practical conclusion is narrower: passing converter-only tests cannot establish how a separate parser will interpret the output.
