HTML.to.design Cannot Capture a Website: Common Causes and Fixes

Use html.to.design’s Web tab for public pages and its browser extension for logged-in or session-dependent pages. Here are documented fixes for CAPTCHA interruptions, truncated full-page captures, and mobile layouts that differ from a phone.

If html.to.design cannot capture a website, first check whether the page opens and displays correctly in your browser. For a public page, try the plugin’s Web tab. For a page that needs a login, VPN, browser session, or CAPTCHA you have already solved, capture it with the html.to.design browser extension instead. The extension can send the capture to the plugin or save it as a local .h2d file.

Choose the capture route that matches the page

html.to.design combines a Figma plugin and browser extension that turn captured webpages into editable Figma designs. Its Web-tab importer is intended for publicly accessible pages; the extension captures a page that is already open in your browser, including authenticated pages. html.to.design product overview

Situation Use Why
Public page that opens without an account or special network access Web tab URL import It imports a page by its open URL. Web-tab guidance
Login-protected, VPN-only, or session-dependent page Browser extension The page can be captured from the browser where you are signed in or connected. Private-page instructions
Page blocked by a CAPTCHA during URL import Solve the challenge in the browser, then use the extension The importer does not solve CAPTCHA challenges automatically. Extension overview
Long page truncated at the visible area Try the documented large-viewport extension workflow Some sites handle page height and scrolling in ways that interfere with full-page capture. Full-page guidance
Mobile capture does not resemble a real phone Try a custom user-agent with the extension Some sites serve different layouts based on device user-agent. User-agent guidance

Fix a URL import that fails

Confirm the page is accessible first

  1. Open the exact URL in a regular browser tab.
  2. Check whether it redirects to a sign-in page, requires a VPN or active session, or presents a CAPTCHA.
  3. If it is public and renders normally, try importing its URL through html.to.design’s Web tab.
  4. If it requires access that the importer does not have, sign in or connect in the browser and use the extension on the page you can see.

The extension can send the capture to the plugin or save it locally as a .h2d file for import. The vendor says data from the local-file workflow is stored locally and does not reach its servers; that statement applies to saving and importing the file, not to sending a capture directly to the plugin. If a CAPTCHA appears

Complete the challenge in the browser if you are permitted to access the page, wait until the intended content is visible, and capture that rendered page with the extension. Do not expect URL import to bypass the challenge. The documented workflow does not establish that the extension defeats every bot protection.

If the capture uses the wrong language

Make sure the intended language is visibly loaded in the browser before capturing. html.to.design notes that language selection can fail on some sites because of technical limitations in how those sites implement language switching; there is no documented universal fix. Extension overview

Fix a full-page capture that stops early

Some websites manage body height, scrolling, and the display of page items in ways that prevent a normal full-page capture from including everything. The vendor’s workaround is to use Chrome DevTools Device Mode with a very large viewport height, then capture the page with the extension.

  1. Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools.
  2. Enable Device Mode in DevTools.
  3. Set the viewport height to a very large value so more of the page is available in the capture viewport.
  4. Use the html.to.design extension’s full-page capture.
  5. Send the capture to the plugin or save the .h2d file and import it.

This is a documented workaround for sites with particular scrolling or height behavior, not a guarantee for every page. html.to.design full-page guidance

Fix a mobile capture that differs from a phone

A website may choose its layout from the browser’s user-agent, not just the viewport dimensions. If the captured design looks unlike the page on a real phone, use the extension and try changing the user-agent in Chrome DevTools Network conditions before capturing again.

  1. Open the target page in Chrome and open DevTools.
  2. Open Network conditions and change the user-agent to one appropriate for the mobile device or browser you are trying to represent.
  3. Reload the page so the site can respond to the changed user-agent.
  4. Check that the expected mobile version is visibly loaded, then capture it with the extension.

This can help when a site serves different content by user-agent, but the vendor does not promise that it will make every capture match every physical phone. html.to.design user-agent guidance

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is a screenshot file rather than editable Figma layers, ScreenshotNeo can return a webpage screenshot or PDF with one GET request. It is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for html.to.design’s conversion into editable Figma design layers. The API can accept a URL and return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; its available options include full-page capture and custom viewport settings. ScreenshotNeo

Before the capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; these steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and other MCP clients.

When to contact support

If the page renders in your browser but still fails after using the route and workaround that fit the problem, contact html.to.design support. Its published guidance does not establish a universal error-code list, requirements for every browser, operating system, and network, or a workaround that resolves every site-specific failure.
