Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo add a backup encoder, run a second encoder on a separate VPS and send the same program to the backup ingestion URL supplied for your YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, get the current stream URL and key from Live Control Room; use the backup address for the second encoder, and keep its output compatible with the primary feed. YouTube documents redundant ingest, but its documentation does not specify exactly when or how viewers switch feeds if the primary encoder fails—so test your setup and do not assume seamless failover.
What a second-VPS backup does—and does not do
The primary VPS sends the program to YouTube’s primary ingestion address. A separately hosted encoder sends a redundant copy to the event’s backup ingestion address. YouTube’s Live Streaming API exposes both addresses and describes sending the same content to the backup URL simultaneously with the primary feed. See YouTube’s LiveStreams API documentation.

This adds an alternate encoder host and ingest path. It does not automatically make the video source, credentials, provider network, or YouTube’s delivery to viewers redundant. For example, if both encoders depend on one source file or one upstream connection, that shared dependency can still fail. That is an architectural consideration, not a YouTube guarantee.
YouTube’s official documentation does not state precisely how or when viewers switch between feeds when one encoder stops. Do not promise a seamless transition or a particular recovery time; observe the behavior in a controlled rehearsal.

Get the active stream’s URLs and credentials
- In YouTube Studio: open Live Control Room and create or schedule the live stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions to find the stream URL and stream key for that stream.
- For an API-managed setup: the
liveStreamsresource provides fields includingingestionAddress, backupIngestionAddress, rtmpsIngestionAddress, andrtmpsBackupIngestionAddress. Choose the values that match the active stream and protocol; do not substitute a remembered or sample endpoint. - Protect the key: enter the stream’s credentials in the appropriate encoder settings and keep the key out of public logs, screenshots, source repositories, and shared configuration. It identifies the stream to YouTube.
For details on YouTube’s RTMPS endpoints, see Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.
Configure the second VPS encoder
- Install and prepare an encoder on the second VPS using the method supported by your chosen software and operating system. YouTube’s cited setup guidance covers encoder connection and settings; it does not prescribe a VPS provider, CPU or memory size, operating-system service, or a particular command. Size and configure the host for the encoder workload you actually run.
- Point its output at the backup address. Enter the active event’s backup ingestion URL and the appropriate stream credentials. For an RTMPS setup, use the RTMPS endpoint and port 443. YouTube’s RTMPS guide notes that the server hostname is needed for authentication through TLS SNI; use an encoder and configuration that preserve the hostname rather than connecting by IP alone.
- Match the program and compatible output settings. Send the same program content, resolution, frame rate, codec, audio mix, and compatible keyframe cadence as the primary. Matching these is practical guidance for a redundant copy, not a separately stated YouTube requirement.
- Set bitrate and keyframes for the actual format. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with an interval no longer than four seconds. Its current settings guidance recommends the following ingest bitrates for these examples:
| Encoding and format | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| H.264, 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| H.265/HEVC or AV1, 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| H.265/HEVC or AV1, 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube-published ingest recommendations, not a guarantee of VPS capacity. The VPS must sustain the outbound traffic for every active copy, plus network overhead. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for its supported protocols, codecs, and settings; the current guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1.

Choose RTMPS unless your workflow specifically needs HLS
For a conventional encoder workflow, RTMPS is the straightforward default: YouTube recommends it, documents the backup RTMPS address, and specifies port 443. Use the endpoint for the active event rather than hard-coding an address.
Recommended Free Tools
YouTube also documents redundant HLS ingestion. Its backup HLS URL uses a different hostname and a copy= parameter. HLS has segmented uploads and typically higher latency than RTMP/WebRTC, so it is not an interchangeable URL choice for an RTMPS encoder. Use it only if your encoder supports YouTube’s HLS ingestion requirements or your use case calls for HLS. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide.

Rehearse the backup and monitor stream health
- Test before the live event. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Rehearse with audio and motion similar to the real program rather than checking only a static image or silent feed.
- Verify the second encoder is sending. Confirm that it is connected to the intended backup endpoint and is sending the expected picture and audio. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and status during the rehearsal.
- Exercise the failure procedure. In a private or otherwise controlled rehearsal appropriate for your channel, interrupt the primary encoder and observe what happens to the stream and viewer experience. Record what you actually see; YouTube’s documentation does not establish a universal transition behavior or failover time.
- Check the full path. Confirm the source, each VPS’s outbound connection, encoder process, credentials, and YouTube stream status. A backup host cannot compensate for a shared source or network dependency that has also failed.
YouTube’s testing and monitoring recommendations are on its encoder settings page; API stream health fields are described in the LiveStreams resource.
What the documented setup leaves to you
YouTube documents the backup ingestion address and the ability to send a redundant copy. It does not choose a VPS vendor, give CPU or memory requirements for a specific encoder command, provide an operating-system service template, or set a recovery-time objective for this arrangement. Those depend on whether your encoder re-encodes or relays the source, the media format, and the VPS and network you select. Validate process recovery, secret handling, capacity, and behavior on your chosen setup rather than treating them as built-in YouTube guarantees.
