Use a Markdown table for a short, regular comparison if your publishing platform supports the syntax. Use an HTML table when you need features Markdown lacks, such as spanning cells, a header column, or structured content inside a cell—or when a long pipe table is hard to maintain. In either case, check the target renderer and mark up headers so readers can understand how each value relates to its heading.
How to choose between HTML and Markdown tables
Choose the simplest format that your destination handles and that preserves the table’s structure. Markdown is often more compact to write for basic tables; HTML can express more structure and attributes. Neither choice works identically in every publishing system, so the destination—not the file extension alone—determines what readers will see.

| Decision factor | Markdown table (GFM example) | HTML table |
|---|---|---|
| Source readability | Compact for short, regular tables; long rows can make the pipe-based source unwieldy. | More tags, but long cell content or complex structure can be easier to maintain. |
| Features | GFM has a header row but does not support header columns, block elements in cells, classes, or attributes such as colspan, rowspan, and scope. |
Can express richer structures and attributes, when the publishing platform permits them. |
| Renderer behavior | Depends on whether the platform recognizes that Markdown dialect or extension. | Raw HTML handling and sanitization also vary by platform. |
| Accessibility | Convenient syntax does not by itself ensure that headers are properly related to data. | Can express semantic table structure, but authors must use it correctly. |
When a Markdown table is the better fit
Use Markdown when the data is a simple grid: a header row followed by comparable values, with no need for merged cells or rich content in a cell. A compact pipe table is straightforward to edit in source and can be a good fit for documentation stored as Markdown.
“Markdown” is not a single uniform feature set. GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM), for example, defines a table extension, but a platform using another dialect may not interpret the same syntax. Check your project’s documentation or preview the page in its actual destination. GitHub describes its own Markdown behavior in Organizing information with tables.

When HTML is worth the extra markup
Use raw HTML when a required table feature is unavailable in the destination’s Markdown syntax, or when HTML makes a long table’s source easier to inspect and edit. MDN recommends GFM when it is sufficient and raw HTML when a needed feature is unavailable or HTML is more readable: How to write in Markdown.
- A cell must span rows or columns: HTML supports attributes such as
rowspanandcolspan; GFM tables do not. - You need a header column: GFM requires a header row but does not support a header column.
- A cell needs block content: GFM does not parse block elements such as lists inside table cells.
- You need table attributes or classes: GFM does not support classes or attributes such as
scope. - The pipe-table source is difficult to manage: HTML’s explicit tags may be easier to work with when cells are long or the structure is complex.
MDN gives its own authors a guideline to switch to HTML when a GFM table representation would exceed 150 characters in width. That is an MDN house rule, not a technical limit or general standard. Long source is a reason to consider HTML, not a reason that every platform must use it.
Check what the publishing platform accepts
Markdown table support depends on the dialect and extensions enabled by the platform. Raw HTML can also be restricted, transformed, or sanitized. Before committing to either syntax, confirm that the destination renders the table structure and any needed attributes as intended. If HTML is stripped or an extension is missing, the rendered result may differ from the source you edited.

Accessibility comes from meaningful structure and appropriate use, not from choosing HTML as a label. A table should present genuinely tabular information, and its header cells need to be structurally associated with the data they describe. W3C WAI explains that tables without markup that distinguishes and properly links header and data cells create accessibility barriers in its Tables Tutorial.
HTML gives authors elements and attributes for expressing table semantics, but those must be used correctly. Markdown’s concise syntax does not guarantee those relationships either; check the rendered output and the semantics produced by the platform. HTML tables are intended for tabular data, not page layout: MDN’s table element reference explains that using tables for layout can reduce accessibility for visually impaired users.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a table may not be the right presentation
If a table is very wide, contains large blocks of text, or is difficult to scan, reconsider whether a grid is the clearest way to present the information. Changing Markdown to HTML can solve a markup limitation, but it does not make dense content easier for readers to compare. Choose a table only when the relationships between rows and columns help explain the data.
