Choose Puppeteer when a screenshot depends on browser actions such as signing in, navigating through a workflow, or interacting with a page before capture. Choose the HTML/CSS to Image API when you can submit HTML/CSS or a public URL and want a managed rendering service to return an image. The key difference is control versus a packaged service—not a proven speed or cost advantage for developers in India.
How the two screenshot approaches differ
| Question | HTML/CSS to Image API | Puppeteer |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | A managed rendering service that accepts HTML/CSS or a public URL and returns an image or PDF. | A JavaScript library for controlling a browser, including navigation, interaction, and screenshots. |
| What do you operate? | You call the service; its hosted rendering browser and image-handling features are part of the service offering. | You launch or connect to a browser and manage the surrounding workflow, deployment, and delivery. |
| Best fit | Rendering submitted markup or capturing a public page without a custom sequence of browser interactions. | Captures that require browser steps, application-specific logic, or closer control over the browser environment. |
| Output handling | The API documents PNG, JPG, WebP, and PDF options; its plans describe hosted image handling. | A screenshot call returns image data or writes a file; you decide how to store, serve, or transform it. |
The product comparison is published by HTML/CSS to Image, so use it to understand the service’s own positioning, not as independent proof that it outperforms Puppeteer. Puppeteer’s project documentation independently describes its browser and screenshot APIs. Neither source provides a comparative benchmark.

Which one should an Indian developer choose?
Choose Puppeteer for browser-driven workflows
- Your target requires authentication, navigation, clicks, or other browser interaction before the screenshot.
- You need to control the browser workflow or operate it in infrastructure you select.
- Your team can take responsibility for browser installation and versioning, deployment, capacity, temporary files, and delivery of the result.
Choose HTML/CSS to Image for an API-driven render
- Your input is HTML/CSS or a public URL and the desired result is an image or PDF.
- You prefer a managed rendering service over running and maintaining the browser workflow yourself.
- The service’s documented parameters and output handling fit the job without custom browser steps.
For Indian teams, the reviewed sources do not establish an India-based rendering region, India-specific latency, rupee billing, taxes, or data-residency terms for either option. Puppeteer can be deployed in an environment you choose, but that does not by itself establish comparative performance from India. Confirm provider terms and deployment region for your needs, or measure latency and behavior from the locations where your application will run.

Using the HTML/CSS to Image API
The documented image endpoint is POST https://hcti.io/v1/image. Authenticate with HTTP Basic authentication using your API ID and API key; keep the key server-side and treat it as a secret. Supply either HTML or a public URL as the required input, not both. CSS is optional. The API documentation lists PNG, JPG, WebP, and PDF, along with parameters for wait timing, media type, and cropping.
Check the current API documentation for the exact request fields and response structure before integrating, since those details can change: Using the API and Parameters.
Cost snapshot
As displayed on October 3, 2026, HTML/CSS to Image listed 50 images per month on its free plan and a Basic plan starting at $14 per month. Plan volume selection and terms may affect the offer. These are published service prices, not an India-specific total: the sources do not establish currency conversion, taxes, or billing terms for an Indian account. Check the current pricing page before committing.

Using Puppeteer to capture a screenshot
Puppeteer’s official guide uses Page.screenshot() to capture a page. Here is a minimal Node.js example that navigates to a URL, saves a full-page PNG, and closes the browser even if capture fails.
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'shot.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Install puppeteer when you want its installation flow to download a compatible browser. Use puppeteer-core when you will manage or connect to a browser yourself. The installation guide notes that blocked install scripts can prevent the browser download.

Production considerations
- Manage browser lifecycle deliberately: launch, reuse, or connect according to your workload, and close resources when they are no longer needed.
- Plan for deployment-specific requirements such as browser versions, capacity, writable directories, and where screenshots will be stored and served.
- Do not treat disabling the browser sandbox as a routine fix. Puppeteer’s browser-management guidance says running without a sandbox is strongly discouraged.
See browser management and troubleshooting for project guidance on setup and browser issues.

The API has published image-plan allowances and subscription prices. Puppeteer is a library; no per-image Puppeteer subscription is identified in the cited project documentation. That does not make a self-run capture pipeline free: its actual cost depends on compute, storage, image delivery, and the engineering time needed to operate it. The vendor’s comparison explicitly presents its operational-responsibility discussion as architecture, not a measured cost estimate.
For a fair decision, estimate the complete workflow you will run: browser capacity and maintenance for Puppeteer, or service plan limits and terms for the API. No independent comparative total-cost, speed, success-rate, or reliability statistic is established by the cited sources.

Common implementation problems and fixes
Puppeteer cannot find its browser
A blocked install script may have prevented the browser download, or the project may be using puppeteer-core without a configured browser. Check the installation mode and follow Puppeteer’s current installation guide rather than assuming the executable is present.
Browser launch fails in a container
Container dependencies, permissions, and runtime configuration can affect browser launch. Use the official troubleshooting guidance for the deployment environment. Do not make disabling the sandbox your default workaround; Puppeteer strongly discourages running without it.
The capture happens before the page is ready
Navigation completion and application readiness are not always the same thing. For Puppeteer, choose a navigation wait condition that suits the page and add an explicit wait for the application state your capture needs. For the API, consult its documented wait-timing options and tune them for the page rather than assuming a single delay fits every site.

The API rejects an input or the result is not the expected format
Check that the request supplies HTML or a public URL as the required input, rather than both, and verify the documented format and parameter names. Keep credentials out of client-side code and logs. Confirm the current API response and parameter documentation when diagnosing integration changes.
Is HTML/CSS to Image a Puppeteer alternative?
Yes, for screenshot workflows that fit a managed rendering API—such as submitting markup or capturing a public URL. It is not a like-for-like replacement when your task depends on custom browser automation. If you need browser steps, Puppeteer gives you that control; if you want a managed API, compare HTML/CSS to Image’s published inputs, output formats, and plan terms against the requirements of your job.
Another managed API to consider: ScreenshotNeo
If you want a screenshot API rather than a browser library, try ScreenshotNeo first. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Before capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those steps can be switched off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients.
For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of a public URL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API options. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Puppeteer have a per-screenshot subscription fee?
The cited Puppeteer project documentation identifies Puppeteer as a library and does not identify a per-image subscription. The cost of running the browser and delivery infrastructure depends on your deployment.
Does either option have a verified India-based rendering region?
The cited material does not establish an India-based browser region for HTML/CSS to Image. Puppeteer can be deployed in a chosen environment, but the sources do not provide an India-specific comparative latency test.
