OBS can loop a single media file or play and loop a VLC playlist, but that alone does not automatically switch to a separate holding scene between playlist items. For unattended playback, test a scene-automation or cloud-playout setup before relying on it.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube encoder stream created in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- OBS Studio and your video files. To use OBS’s VLC Video source for a playlist, install VLC as well; OBS documents the requirement in its Media Sources guide.
- A holding-screen image or short video, designed for the same aspect ratio as your stream.
- A computer and internet connection that can stay on for the duration of a locally encoded broadcast.
YouTube sends the stream to your encoder through a stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains where to enter those details and how to end the broadcast.

Set up the YouTube stream and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. Follow the current on-screen setup to get the stream URL and key.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream details using the connection method available in your OBS version. Keep the key private; do not put it in a public scene, screenshot or message.
- In Live Control Room, check the incoming preview before making the stream public. YouTube’s setup flow can change, so follow the labels shown in your account rather than relying on an old screenshot.
Create the program scene
For one video
- In OBS, create a scene named Program.
- Add a Media Source, select the video file, and enable Loop if that file should repeat. The OBS documentation describes looping for an individual file.
- Check the preview for cropping, black bars, and audio level. If the video does not fill the canvas as intended, adjust its transform or the canvas and output settings before going live.
For a playlist of videos
- Add a VLC Video source to the Program scene and add the local files to its playlist.
- Enable the source’s playlist loop option if you want the sequence to repeat. VLC must be installed for this OBS source.
- Play through the file transitions in the preview. Confirm that each item has the expected audio and framing.
OBS’s playlist controls handle playback and looping. The cited OBS documentation does not establish that a playlist will trigger a switch to a different OBS scene at each item boundary.

Build the branded holding scene
- Create a separate scene named Holding screen.
- Add an Image Source for a static slate, or a Media Source for an animated holding clip. Add a text source for a short message such as “Next video starts soon,” a schedule, or channel branding.
- Keep important text and logos away from the edges, make the message legible at the stream’s actual resolution, and check that the scene fills the canvas.
- Decide what viewers should hear during the slate. Mute or retain program audio intentionally, and test the transition in the OBS preview.
Switch between videos and the holding screen
Start the OBS stream and confirm that YouTube receives the picture and audio. When a video ends, select Holding screen in OBS; select Program when the next video is ready. Keep the encoder connected throughout. Stopping the encoder’s content ends the stream, whereas switching scenes changes what the still-running encoder sends.

If transitions must happen without an operator, use a dedicated scene-automation workflow or hosted playout and test it end to end, including what happens after a restart or playback error. Do not assume that playlist looping itself performs this scene switch.
Use YouTube’s away slate for a temporary break
YouTube also documents a temporary away-slate option controlled through Live Control Room. It is intended for a break during an existing stream, not as a documented scheduler that inserts a branded slate between playlist items. YouTube’s away-slate instructions describe adding the overlay URL as an OBS Browser Source and recommend testing it before relying on it.

Check the audio separately: YouTube notes that the overlay does not affect other audio sources, and audio from a video slate may need to be included in the stream’s audio settings. Confirm the result in a private test or preview before using it for viewers.

End the stream and understand archiving
When you intend to stop broadcasting, end the stream in Live Control Room and stop sending content from the encoder, following YouTube’s encoder workflow. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; this does not mean a stream of 12 hours or longer will be archived automatically.
Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube shows no incoming video: Check that OBS is connected, the selected stream key and URL match the current Live Control Room stream, and the key has not been changed or exposed. Confirm the preview before publishing.
- The holding screen never appears between playlist items: A looping VLC playlist does not, by itself, document automatic switching to another scene. Switch scenes manually or configure and test a separate automation workflow.
- The VLC playlist source is unavailable: Install VLC, then restart or reopen OBS and check the source again.
- The slate appears but audio continues unexpectedly: Review the audio sources in OBS and the away-slate audio configuration. The YouTube overlay does not mute other audio sources automatically.
- The slate is cropped or text is hard to read: Check the source transform, canvas dimensions, aspect ratio, safe margins, and preview at the output size.
- The broadcast stops when you close OBS or turn off the computer: A local OBS workflow depends on the computer and connection remaining available. Use a tested hosted playout option if the encoder must run unattended without that local setup.
