If Windows says hpzcon04.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair or remove the related HP DeskJet software instead of downloading the DLL and copying it into a Windows folder.
The file is associated with the HP DeskJet Printing System for Windows and older DeskJet families such as the DeskJet 840C series. It can be called during printer installation, removal, or configuration. A damaged installation, an incomplete uninstall, antivirus quarantine, or an incompatible legacy driver can all produce the error.
Use the fixes below in order. Stop when the printer works normally or the obsolete HP software has been removed.
1. Remove and reinstall the HP printer
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
This is the most useful fix when you still use the printer. Windows should install the complete driver package rather than leaving you with a replacement copy of one missing DLL.

Remove the printer
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected HP DeskJet printer.
- Click Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
If the printer is not listed, continue with the software-removal steps later in this guide.
Add the printer again
- Open Settings.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Click Add device.
- Wait while Windows searches for printers.
- Select the HP printer when it appears.
- Follow the setup prompts.
- Print a test page from the printer’s settings page.
Windows Update is Microsoft’s preferred source for current printer drivers. For older DeskJet models, HP’s official printer-support and setup pages may also provide the appropriate instructions. The DeskJet 840C-family setup information identifies Windows built-in driver support on Windows 10, although that does not guarantee that every old HP utility or legacy feature works on every current Windows release.
If Windows cannot find the printer, connect the printer, turn it on, and select Add device again. For a USB printer, try another USB port and avoid connecting through an unpowered hub. For a network printer, confirm that the computer and printer are on the same network.
If the printer still produces the DLL error
Remove the old HP software as well:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for HP, DeskJet, or HP Printing System.
- Select the matching old printer software.
- Click the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstall wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Printers & scanners and add the printer again.
On older Windows interfaces, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select the HP printer software, and click Uninstall.
Do not mix files from different HP printer families. Select the exact model, such as an 840C, 841C, 842C, or 843C, and use the driver intended for your version and architecture of Windows.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through driver versions and checking which device entries are stale; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation and repair are handled by the full version. Reinstalling the correct HP package remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to a specific old printer installation.
2. Remove a leftover HP uninstall or startup entry
Time needed: 10–25 minutes
A common reason this filename appears after the printer has already been removed is a leftover uninstall command. Historical HP entries used a command similar to:
rundll32 hpzcon04.dll,VendorJettison hp deskjet 840c series
VendorJettison was an HP setup or removal function. If the HP file was deleted before the uninstall entry was cleaned up, Windows may continue trying to call it.
Remove the old software normally first
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Remove old HP DeskJet or HP Printing System entries.
- Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers if it is available.
- Right-click the old HP printer.
- Choose Remove device.
- Restart Windows.
Then check whether the message returns.
Check startup applications
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an old HP, DeskJet, printer setup, or printer monitor entry.
- If the entry clearly belongs to the removed printer, right-click it.
- Select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
You can also check Settings > Apps > Startup for the same type of entry.

Do not delete random startup items merely because they mention a DLL. Confirm that the entry belongs to the old HP printer software. If the error persists and you are comfortable with advanced maintenance, back up the registry before investigating obsolete HP entries. Manual registry removal is not the first choice, and deleting the wrong entry can damage another program’s startup process.
If the printer is no longer used, uninstalling the old HP software is the correct solution. There is no reason to keep hpzcon04.dll installed solely to silence a dead printer-removal command.
3. Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
If the error began immediately after a security scan, the file may have been quarantined. This does not prove that the file was malicious. It also does not prove that the file was safe merely because its name starts with hp.
Check the security product that reported the event:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
hpzcon04.dllor the HP printer software. - Expand the event to see its original file path and action.
- Do not restore the file yet.
Restore it only when all of the following are true:
- The file was inside a legitimate HP printer-driver directory.
- The printer software is still required.
- The security alert identifies the file as part of that trusted installation.
- The HP installation itself has not been tampered with.
If those conditions are not clear, leave the file quarantined. Remove the old HP package and reinstall the exact driver through Windows Update or HP’s official support site. Then run a full malware scan.
A clean reinstall is safer than restoring an isolated DLL because the error may involve other missing HP files or a damaged installation.

4. Install the correct driver for the Windows architecture
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
The related Microsoft Update Catalog package for the DeskJet 840C family is an x86 printer-driver package. That matters because an old 32-bit printer component is not the same thing as a native 64-bit Windows system file.
Rank #3
- IN THE BOX: (1) 10-foot high-speed multi-shielded USB 2.0 A-Male to B-Male cable
- DEVICE COMPATIBLE: Connects mice, keyboards, and speed-critical devices, such as external hard drives, printers, and cameras to a computer
- ULTRA FAST SPEED: Full 2.0 USB capability with 480 Mbps transfer speed
- DURABLE DESIGN: Corrosion-resistant, gold-plated connectors for optimal signal clarity and shielding to protect against noise, minimizing interference for a clear signal
Check your Windows architecture:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Find System type.
- Note whether Windows is 64-bit, 32-bit, or ARM-based.
Then verify the exact printer model and obtain the matching package through Windows Update or HP’s official support pages. Do not combine hpzcon04.dll from one HP package with files from another.
A 32-bit legacy component may work through a compatible printer driver, but an old installer or utility may fail on modern 64-bit or ARM Windows. If Windows reports that the file is “not designed to run on Windows” or displays a status code, treat that as an application or architecture compatibility problem rather than proof that the DLL should be copied elsewhere.
Use Device Manager to refresh the printer entry
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers and Print queues.
- Right-click the affected HP device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal if prompted.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Device Manager again.
- Select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
- Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
If Windows reinstalls a generic device but the printer still fails, remove it again and use the exact HP model support instructions. A generic driver may provide basic printing while leaving the old HP software in a broken state.
5. Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
hpzcon04.dll is third-party HP software, so System File Checker is not normally able to restore it. SFC repairs protected Windows components, not arbitrary files from an old printer package.
Use DISM and SFC when the DLL error appears alongside broader Windows problems, such as built-in applications failing, Windows Update errors, damaged system features, or repeated corruption messages.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Run SFC second
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
A message stating that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them indicates that Windows components were fixed. A message stating that no integrity violations were found means SFC did not find protected Windows corruption. Neither result confirms that the HP printer package is repaired.

6. Consider System Restore only after a known change
Time needed: 20–60 minutes
Use System Restore when the error began after a specific printer-driver installation, cleanup, or security event and a suitable restore point exists.

- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore is not necessary for a printer that you no longer use. It also may not restore a complete third-party driver package, so reinstalling the printer software can still be required afterward.
For widespread Windows corruption that affects many unrelated components, use Windows repair options. A repair installation is not the normal solution for one obsolete HP printer DLL.

Why copying hpzcon04.dll is usually the wrong fix
Downloading a DLL from a random file repository creates several problems:
- The file may be modified or bundled with malware.
- It may belong to a different HP printer model.
- It may have the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- It may depend on other missing HP files.
- Windows may be loading a different copy from an unexpected path.
- The original installer, uninstall entry, or driver registration may still be broken.
Copying the file into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is especially unsafe. Those directories are not general repair locations, and placing an old printer component there can create version conflicts or fail to solve the actual dependency problem.
The safest sources are Windows Update and the official HP support page for the exact printer model. Install the complete package, not an isolated DLL.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why regsvr32 hpzcon04.dll usually does not apply
regsvr32 is used for DLLs that expose the registration entry points required by that utility. It is not a universal command for fixing every missing DLL.
Recommended Free Tools
The old HP driver information identifies hpzcon04.dll as a setup component with functions used through rundll32, including the historical VendorJettison removal command. That is different from COM-style self-registration.
If you run:
regsvr32 hpzcon04.dll
and receive an error, that does not necessarily mean the file is corrupt. The likely issue is that the DLL was never intended to be registered this way. Reinstall the complete HP printer package instead.

What causes hpzcon04.dll errors
The most likely causes are:
| Cause | What it usually means | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| Incomplete HP installation | A printer setup or removal operation lost part of its files | Remove and reinstall the exact printer package |
| Leftover uninstall entry | Windows still calls an old HP removal command | Uninstall remaining HP software and disable the obsolete startup entry |
| Antivirus quarantine | Security software removed or isolated the file | Review quarantine, then reinstall if the printer is trusted and still needed |
| Architecture mismatch | An old x86 component is being used with an incompatible package or system | Use the exact model and compatible driver |
| Missing dependency | The named DLL exists, but another file it needs does not | Reinstall the complete package |
| Corrupted file | The DLL or surrounding HP installation is damaged | Remove the package and reinstall it |
| Broad Windows corruption | Other protected Windows components are also failing | Run DISM first, then SFC |
Windows can also report “the specified module could not be found” when a dependency of hpzcon04.dll is missing. The named file may exist while one of its required supporting files does not.
FAQ
Is hpzcon04.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a Hewlett-Packard printer-driver component associated with the HP Printing System for Windows. It is not a Microsoft runtime DLL.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Which printers use hpzcon04.dll?
The file is associated with older HP DeskJet printing systems, including the DeskJet 840C family and related models such as the 841C, 842C, and 843C. Do not assume that every HP printer uses it.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Usually no. This is an HP printer component, not a normal game or Microsoft runtime error. Install common runtimes only when a separate application specifically requires them. Repair the complete HP printer installation first.
The file exists, but Windows still cannot load it. What does that mean?
The file may be corrupted, a required dependency may be missing, or the caller may be loading an incompatible architecture. Reinstall the complete driver package rather than replacing only hpzcon04.dll.
Can I copy the file from another computer?
Normally no. A copied file may not match the printer model, architecture, or surrounding HP package. Use the complete driver from Windows Update or HP’s official support process.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy does the error appear at every startup?
An old HP startup or uninstall entry may still be calling the file. Check Installed apps, Printers & scanners, Task Manager’s Startup apps, and Settings’ startup list. Remove the obsolete HP software instead of downloading the DLL.
Is the file safe because it has an HP name?
No. The filename alone proves nothing. Check its location, the surrounding installation, and any available Hewlett-Packard digital signature. If the file is in an unexpected directory or security software detected it, reinstall from a trusted source and scan the system.
What should I do if I no longer use the printer?
Uninstall the old HP software, remove the printer, disable its obsolete startup entry, and restart Windows. Keeping the DLL is unnecessary.
What information should I collect before asking for more help?
Record the exact printer model, Windows version and architecture, complete error wording, file path shown in the message, whether the printer is still needed, and whether the problem began after an uninstall or antivirus scan. Those details distinguish a broken driver from a stale startup command or an unrelated Windows problem.
