Reviewer Daniel A. Begun found the suite useful for everyday tasks but uneven in responsiveness and reliability: DVD and Blu-ray playback worked well in his test, while several video apps crashed or failed. These are historical observations, not confirmation of current software or streaming support.
What TouchSmart software did the HP TouchSmart 600 include?
The review describes a collection of applications designed to make common tasks usable through the touchscreen. Its most touch-focused program was Canvas, which let users select, move, rotate, and zoom images with multi-touch gestures. Canvas was intended for arranging photos into collages and tagging images.

Creative and everyday tools
- Canvas: Multi-touch photo arranging, collages, and image tagging.
- Recipe Box: Recipe management with speech-command support and the ability to import recipes from web pages.
- Webcam and photo tools: Webcam capture and effects, plus basic photo viewing and editing.
- Calendar and RSS utilities: Simple tools for viewing calendar information and feeds.
- Ambient-light controls: Settings for the computer’s ambient-light feature.
Television and video
The suite also included live and recorded TV functions, alongside video apps and disc playback. The system had a built-in TV tuner; for over-the-air broadcasts, the reviewer says owners had to provide an antenna. The review does not specify an antenna model, connector, or reception conditions, so it does not establish which antenna would work in a particular home.
How responsive and reliable were the apps?
Begun judged the software useful for touch-oriented versions of familiar tasks, but not especially robust. He wrote, “The interface was often sluggish to respond to our touch input.” He also reported crashes or failures in Netflix, Hulu Desktop, and the Video app during his 2010 test. He suggested streaming-heavy video applications might have contributed, but did not establish a cause.

Did the TouchSmart 600 play DVDs and Blu-ray discs?
Yes, in the review’s test, DVD and Blu-ray playback was stable. Begun described the images as sharp, with vibrant colors and dark blacks. He noted that the display’s glossy finish could distract some viewers, a consideration for anyone watching in a room with bright lights or reflections.
