Yes, some riders have reported having sex or hooking up in San Francisco robotaxis—but the evidence is limited to four accounts in a 2023 investigation, not a measure of how common it is. The San Francisco Standard said those riders had taken Cruise vehicles and provided ride receipts; it found no source who reported having sex in a Waymo.
What the reporting actually established
In an investigation published August 11, 2023, The San Francisco Standard interviewed four Cruise riders who said they had sex or hooked up in driverless vehicles in San Francisco. The publication said it verified the rides using receipts. To protect the riders’ privacy, it changed their names and withheld exact ride dates. Read the Standard’s investigation.

That is evidence of several reported incidents—not evidence of a broader trend. The four interviewees are the number of riders in that investigation, not a count of all incidents or a representative sample. The reporting provides no rate or estimate of how often this happens.

No source interviewed by the Standard said they had sex in a Waymo. That is a limit of what the 2023 investigation found, not proof that it has never happened. The accounts it documented were about Cruise rides.
Waymo’s San Francisco service opened to all riders in June 2024, according to the company’s announcement at the time. That historical access announcement does not establish current service availability in 2026. Waymo’s June 2024 announcement.
A driverless car is not necessarily a private space
In the 2023 Standard article, Cruise said it records interior video for safety and support, and records audio only during active support calls. A Waymo spokesperson said recordings may be reviewed in specific situations involving cleanliness, safety, crashes, or missing items. These are company statements reported in 2023; they do not establish current recording, access, or retention practices.
For riders, the practical distinction is that an empty front seat does not make a robotaxi equivalent to a private room. A vehicle may have cameras or other systems, and the companies’ rules and support processes may apply during a ride. Check the service’s current rider terms and privacy information rather than assuming older descriptions remain unchanged.

The Standard quoted Cruise’s terms as asking riders not to do anything that could “potentially make others uncomfortable.” The rules also prohibited threatening, confrontational, discriminatory, harassing, disrespectful, offensive, or inappropriate conduct. A Cruise spokesperson said violations could lead to account suspension or termination. The report also said both services expected reasonable cleanliness and could charge riders for dirty vehicles. Separate reporting about safety concerns should not be confused with the accounts of consensual conduct in the 2023 story. In December 2024, The Washington Post interviewed four Waymo passengers who described harassment or threats during rides. A Waymo spokesperson called harassment or attempted entry during a ride “extremely rare” and said support agents could remain on calls and work with law enforcement when appropriate. The report described app options to pull over or change the next stop or destination; the spokesperson said support could make similar changes but could not redirect a vehicle’s specific route. That coverage concerns passenger safety and control, not sex in robotaxis. It illustrates why an unstaffed vehicle raises questions beyond privacy: what a rider can do if another person threatens them, and what help the service can provide during a trip. Features and procedures described in 2024 may have changed.
