If your browser keeps opening HP Support tabs without a deliberate click, the tabs alone do not identify the cause. Note whether they appear at Windows sign-in, when the browser starts, or while you are already browsing; that timing points to the right place to troubleshoot. Test one possible trigger at a time rather than assuming HP Support Assistant—or malware—is responsible.
First, note when the tabs open
Before changing settings, record whether Windows had just started, whether the browser was already running, and whether the pages opened as tabs or separate windows. The timing helps distinguish a Windows startup program from browser session behavior or software producing pop-ups while you browse.

- At Windows sign-in: Check Windows startup apps first.
- When the browser starts: Check its startup and session-restore settings.
- During active browsing: Look for other software opening pop-ups and investigate unwanted software if there are additional signs of it.
If the tabs appear at Windows sign-in
Test startup apps one at a time
- Open Task Manager and select Startup apps.
- Look for HP Support Assistant and other entries that might open support pages.
- Temporarily disable one suspected, nonessential entry, then restart Windows and see whether the tabs return.
- If the behavior continues, re-enable that entry and test another one. Changing one item at a time makes it easier to tell which change affects the symptom.
An HP Support Community response to a similar report suggests testing whether HP Support Assistant starts automatically. That is a troubleshooting lead, not proof that it causes every case. If disabling a particular program stops the tabs, update that program or change its automatic-start settings instead of leaving unrelated startup software disabled. HP documents using System Configuration to isolate startup software and services. Disabling all startup items can also disable antivirus and other important functions, so use this only as a temporary diagnostic test. If the tabs appear when the browser starts
Check the browser’s startup or session-restore settings for an unwanted HP Support page and remove it if present. This branch is based on the timing of the symptom; the HP guidance cited here does not provide browser-specific instructions for every browser. If the page is not listed there, return to the startup-app test or look for other software that may be launching the browser.
If the tabs open while you are browsing
Look for software that may be opening pop-ups and remove it or change its settings. HP’s pop-up guidance also points readers to malware guidance for adware or spyware, but HP Support tabs by themselves do not establish that a computer is infected. If your startup test points to the app, HP documents updating it. If that does not resolve the issue, HP also documents uninstalling it, restarting the PC, and reinstalling the latest version.
