If an HP printer prints a PCL XL error page instead of your document, start by checking the printer’s firmware. For the HP Color LaserJet Pro 3200/MFP 3300 and 4201–4203/MFP 4301–4303 families, HP’s documented fix is to update firmware first; reinstall the driver only if the error remains. The steps differ by model, so confirm the full printer model before changing Windows settings.
First, check that the error is coming from the printer
This guidance applies to a printer-generated PCL XL error page, not an error message shown only by a Windows application. HP describes the symptom for the covered models as the printer producing an error page in place of the intended document. The instructions below are specific to the Color LaserJet families named in HP’s support articles; they do not establish a universal cause or fix for every HP printer or Windows setup.

Find the complete model name on the printer or in its Windows printer listing. Also note whether it connects by Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or USB. Those details determine which HP firmware-update route is available.

Color LaserJet Pro 3200 and MFP 3300
HP recommends updating firmware first. You can start the update from the printer control panel or use the software and driver downloads page for your exact model. The control-panel method requires Wi-Fi or Ethernet and is not available when the printer is connected only by USB. For USB-only printers, use HP’s website route. HP warns not to turn off the printer during a firmware update because doing so can permanently damage it. Follow the model-specific instructions at HP’s 3200/3300 PCL XL error instructions.

When the update finishes, try printing the document again. If the PCL XL page still prints, continue to the Windows removal and re-add steps below.
Color LaserJet Pro 4201–4203 and MFP 4301–4303
HP identifies a firmware issue as the cause for these named series and recommends updating firmware, then printing again. Reinstall the driver only if the firmware update does not resolve the error; HP specifically says not to reinstall it when the update fixes the problem. Use the instructions for the exact model at HP’s 4201–4203/4301–4303 PCL XL error page.

If the error remains, remove and add the printer again
For the 3200/3300 series, HP’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 instructions call for removing the existing printer and its driver, then adding the printer again. HP’s directions for these newer models include adding it by TCP/IP address. Use the model-specific HP support article rather than assuming that a generic driver or a different installation route is appropriate.

- Use HP’s specified method to add the printer again. For the covered 3200/3300 models, follow the article’s TCP/IP-address setup instructions.
- Print the affected document again to check whether the printer now produces the intended output.
For the 4201–4203/4301–4303 family, do these driver steps only after the firmware update fails, following HP’s model-specific article.

Why a generic Windows driver explanation may not be enough
Microsoft Learn discusses PCL XL implementation issues in Windows printer drivers and describes the modern Windows print platform. Its recommendation of the Microsoft IPP inbox class driver with Print Support Apps is platform and developer guidance for printer-device development on Windows 10 and 11—not a universal consumer fix for an HP printer producing a PCL XL page. Start with HP’s instructions for the affected model instead.
HP also documents PCL 6 package and operating-system compatibility issues for certain Enterprise and PageWide models, but that driver-installation scenario does not establish that a driver mismatch causes every PCL XL error page. When these steps do not fit your printer
If your model is not one of the series above, or your symptom appears only inside an application rather than as a page printed by the device, use HP’s support page for your complete model and the applicable Windows version. The documented fixes here do not establish a single cause or sequence for every HP printer, application, connection type, or Windows release.

- Confirm the full model number before installing, removing, or replacing a driver.
- For the 3200/3300 firmware update, use the website method if the printer is USB-only; the control-panel method requires Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Do not interrupt a firmware update by turning off the printer.
