CHIP’s 2024 test found strong text output and measured about 22 pages per minute for black text. Its main workflow compromise is scanning: the automatic document feeder flips double-sided pages rather than capturing both sides in one pass. Ink costs also depend on your region, current cartridge prices, print mix, and whether you choose HP+ at setup.
What the HP OfficeJet Pro 9120e does well
This is a four-function color inkjet: it prints, copies, scans, and faxes. CHIP Testcenter rated it “Sehr gut” (1.5) in its review published April 15, 2024, highlighting its text quality, print speed, and office features. That is independent test evidence for document use, not a guarantee of the same results in every setup.

HP rates the printer at up to 22 A4 ISO pages per minute in black and 18 in color. Those are manufacturer figures; in CHIP’s own test, black-text output was about 22 pages per minute. CHIP also measured an 11-second first black-text page, a 1-minute-8-second graphic print, a 45-second photo print, an 11-second black-and-white document copy, and a 6-second photo scan. These are results under CHIP’s test methods, not universal timings.
CHIP described text printing and text-copy quality as excellent, with high quality for graphics and photos and solid photo-scan quality. HP advertises up to 4,800 × 1,200 optimized dpi color output on specified HP photo paper; that optimized resolution figure should not be treated as a direct measure of real-world photo quality.

Paper handling and connections
The 9120e pairs one 250-sheet input tray with a 35-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF) and a 60-sheet output tray. It supports automatic two-sided printing, so you can print duplex jobs without manually turning the paper. The 2.7-inch touchscreen provides on-device controls.
HP lists dual-band Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB, Wi-Fi Direct, Apple AirPrint, Mopria, Chrome OS support, and the HP app. That mix is useful if some devices need wireless printing while an office computer or network printer setup calls for a wired connection. CHIP noted that the printer has no physical cancel button, a practical inconvenience if you need to stop a job while away from the computer.

How well does it scan double-sided pages?
The ADF supports two-sided originals, but it scans them by reversing each sheet to read the back rather than capturing both sides simultaneously. HP specifies scanning speeds of up to 8 A4 images per minute simplex and up to 4 images per minute duplex at 200 ppi. For occasional two-sided forms this may be adequate; for frequent, large double-sided batches, the sheet-reversing workflow is a notable time trade-off.
Printzone’s early-2024 Australia-market comparison says the higher-positioned OfficeJet Pro 9130e adds a second paper tray and single-pass duplex ADF scanning. That comparison is market- and date-specific, but it illustrates the relevant upgrade criteria: consider a model with single-pass duplex scanning if scanning stacks of two-sided pages is routine, or with multiple trays if you regularly switch paper types.

Ink costs, cartridges, and HP+
CHIP’s 2024 test estimated running costs of 2.3 euro cents per ISO A4 black-text page and 8.3 euro cents per ISO A4 color page. These are dated test-time estimates, not current price quotes. What you actually spend depends on local ink prices, how much color coverage your documents use, print volume, and cartridge choice. HP’s cartridge page-yield declarations use standard test methods and cannot by themselves predict your cost per page without current local prices and your print mix.
Cartridge numbers vary by region. The cited North American HP support specification lists four individual HP 936 cartridges: black, cyan, magenta, and yellow. HP’s European datasheet for model 403X8B lists HP 937 cartridges, with declared yields of 1,250 pages for black and 800 pages for each color cartridge; it also lists HP 937e EvoMore options rated at 2,500 black pages and 1,650 pages per color cartridge. Confirm the model and supplies sold in your market before ordering.

HP says that activating HP+ requires an HP account, an ongoing internet connection, and exclusive use of Original HP ink for the printer’s lifetime. HP also says the printer uses dynamic security to block cartridges that use a non-HP chip. Check the current conditions in your region and decide whether those account, connectivity, and ink restrictions suit you before opting in.

Workload and buying fit
HP lists a maximum monthly duty cycle of 25,000 pages and a recommended monthly volume of up to 1,500 pages. The maximum is a limit figure, not a sensible routine target; the recommended volume is the more useful guide when judging whether the printer matches your workload.
- Good fit: a home or small office that prints routine documents, needs color, values a 250-sheet tray, and benefits from fax, duplex printing, and Ethernet/Wi-Fi/USB options.
- Less suitable: a workflow dominated by high-volume two-sided scanning, frequent paper-type changes that call for separate trays, or a need to stop print jobs from a dedicated physical cancel button.
- Cost-conscious buyers: compare current local cartridge prices, high-yield options, and any available Instant Ink plan against your real usage instead of relying on a dated cost-per-page estimate.
