HP laptops do not all include keyboard backlighting. To find out whether yours does, check the specifications for its exact model or product number; if the feature is present, use the backlight-marked key on the function row to turn it on.
Does your HP laptop have a backlit keyboard?
HP Support states, “Not all HP notebooks have a backlit keyboard.” The family name or screen size is not enough to confirm the feature: it can vary by model and configuration. HP recommends looking up the specifications using your laptop’s full model or product number.

- Find the model or product number on the laptop’s label or in its system information.
- Open the specifications for that exact product on HP Support’s backlit-keyboard instructions or its product page.
- Look for “backlit keyboard” in the keyboard specification. If the listing does not say this, do not assume the laptop has an integrated keyboard light.
HP’s support guidance names ENVY, Pavilion, OMEN, Spectre, and select EliteBook and ProBook models among lines that can offer backlit keyboards. Those family names describe possible options, not a guarantee for every configuration.

How to turn on the keyboard light
On most supported HP notebooks, the keyboard-light control is F4 or F5, sometimes used with Fn. Check the full function-key row for a key marked with a keyboard-backlight icon; its position can vary.

- Locate the backlight icon on the function-key row.
- Press that key. If nothing happens, try holding Fn while pressing it.
- Press the control again to cycle through available lighting settings, if the model provides more than one.
F5, F9, and F11 are also common positions across different HP laptops, according to HP Tech Takes. Treat these as general possibilities rather than a universal key map: follow the icon and documentation for your specific notebook.
What if the backlight key does nothing?
- Verify the configuration first. Recheck the exact product number and keyboard specification. A function key cannot enable a feature that the laptop’s hardware does not include.
- Check the icon and Fn combination. Key placement and whether Fn is needed can differ between models.
- Consult model-specific guidance. HP directs OMEN owners to separate gaming-related lighting information; do not assume those controls are identical to ordinary notebook keyboard backlighting.
HP examples: why the product number matters
HP’s specifications for the 15-fd0000 series say the “Backlit keyboard [is] available on select models.” That means the series name alone does not establish that a particular unit has the feature. The HP Laptop 15-fd0056ne product sheet, product number 9Q4M6EA, specifically lists a “Full-size, backlit, soft gray keyboard with numeric keypad.”

This confirms the keyboard specification for that configuration; it does not establish current stock, price, or availability in every country. Before buying, match the complete product number on the seller’s listing to the HP specification for your market. For any other HP model, verify its own specification rather than inferring the feature from a product-family name.
