Nothing Ear (3a): Is Its Big Bass a Bonus or a Deal-Breaker?

The Nothing Ear (3a) costs $99 at list price and comes tuned with a lot of bass. That can make music feel energetic, but reviewers say the low end can crowd vocals and other details until you adjust the sound in Nothing’s X app. Buy it for the bass, or if you’re willing to tune it—not for a neutral sound straight out of the case.

How do the Nothing Ear (3a) sound?

The default tuning is the Ear (3a)’s defining trade-off. SoundGuys and RTINGS both describe it as very bass-heavy, while Tom’s Guide says the low end was over-amplified for its reviewer’s taste. Tom’s Guide found treble and upper mids clear, but said busy tracks could lose midrange separation beneath the bass. Listeners who enjoy a punchy, bass-forward presentation may like the stock sound; those who prefer balanced or neutral tuning may find it too much.

Nothing says the Ear (3a)’s 12 mm driver makes bass “up to 5 dB louder” than the Ear (a). That is Nothing’s comparative product claim, not an independent measurement. The company also advertises Hi-Res Audio with LDAC, Bluetooth 6.0 and Static Spatial Audio. Nothing’s US product page

Can the app fix the bass?

Nothing X includes EQ controls. Tom’s Guide says reducing bass with the app’s 8-band parametric EQ made the sound more balanced; RTINGS also says the parametric EQ can dial back the low end. SoundGuys found the Balanced and More Treble presets scored above 4.6/5 overall in its MDAQS model, which predicts responses for a simulated group of about 200 people—it was not a direct listener-panel result. EQ gives you room to adjust the sound, but it cannot guarantee that the result will suit every listener.

SoundGuys tested the earbuds for four days, using both a company-provided review unit and a separately purchased unit. Its overall judgment was that the Ear (3a) is a sensible $99 purchase for someone willing to tune the app. SoundGuys’ review

How well do the Nothing Ear (3a) cancel noise?

Nothing advertises wideband ANC of up to 45 dB. That figure is a manufacturer claim; it is not directly comparable to SoundGuys’ test result. SoundGuys measured an average perceived-loudness noise reduction of 80.9% across its test samples. RTINGS says the Anker Soundcore Space A40 has stronger ANC, while its comparison gives the Ear (3a) a slight edge in in-ear stability. RTINGS’ Ear (3a) review

What are the battery life and connection features?

Battery figures depend on whether ANC is on and whether you count the case. Nothing claims up to 10 hours from the earbuds with ANC off and up to 6 hours with ANC on; including the charging case, its claims are up to 42 hours and 25 hours respectively. Tom’s Guide reports those same claimed figures. SoundGuys measured about 10 hours in repeated ANC-off testing, which is close to Nothing’s earbud-only claim; that test does not establish ANC-on endurance. Tom’s Guide’s review

If you regularly use ANC, the 25-hour combined claim—not the 42-hour ANC-off figure—is the more relevant estimate, though real playback time varies with use.

Should you buy the Nothing Ear (3a)?

At its $99 list price, the Ear (3a) makes the most sense for someone who likes prominent bass or is comfortable changing EQ. Nothing’s US product page showed a temporary $79 price against $99 when accessed in 2026; prices and promotions vary by market and can change, so check the current price before buying.
