How Zobrist Hashing Works in Chess Engines

Zobrist hashing gives a chess engine an incrementally updated fingerprint of a position. Here’s how its XOR keys support transposition tables—and why they are not collision-proof.

A chess engine uses Zobrist hashing to turn a position’s relevant state into a compact key: it assigns pseudorandom bit strings to features such as pieces on squares, side to move, castling rights and en-passant availability, then combines the active values with XOR. Because XOR reverses itself, the engine can update the key as a move changes the position rather than rebuild it from scratch. The key helps a transposition table find previously searched positions, but it is a probabilistic signature—not a collision-free identity.

What a Zobrist key represents

A board diagram alone does not capture every detail needed to distinguish chess positions for search. The side to move matters, as do castling rights and whether an en-passant capture is available. A Zobrist key is built from the active features that the engine considers relevant, so omitting state can make positions that behave differently appear equivalent.

The method is a form of tabulation hashing: the program looks up a pseudorandom value for each feature and combines those values with XOR. Albert L. Zobrist introduced the general hash-coding method in his 1970 University of Wisconsin Technical Report #88, describing applications to game-playing programs including chess, checkers and Go. Which features go into the key?

A common initialization scheme assigns a value to each piece type on each square, plus values for side to move, castling state and en-passant file. The Chess Programming Wiki counts 781 values in one conventional representation:

  • 12 piece types × 64 squares = 768 piece-square values.
  • 1 side-to-move value.
  • 4 castling-right values.
  • 8 en-passant-file values.

This is a described convention, not a required constant. Some implementations use 16 castling-state values—one for each combination of four rights—instead of four separate right values. Engines can choose different representations while following the same principle. Chess Programming Wiki: Zobrist Hashing.

Implementations commonly generate the pseudorandom values with a local generator so the same feature receives the same value across runs or platforms. Reproducibility is useful when keys need to remain stable, for example in a position-keyed opening book.

How XOR builds the key

Start with a key of zero. For each active feature, XOR its assigned value into the key: every piece-square feature, the applicable side-to-move value, the current castling state and any en-passant-file value. XOR has a useful property: applying the same value twice cancels it, so x ^ y ^ y = x. That makes it practical both to add and to remove a feature.

The values are pseudorandom, so the resulting key is a compact fingerprint of the selected features rather than a literal encoding of all board data. The specific bit patterns are not chess rules; they are a reproducible way to distribute positions across keys.

How to update the key after a move

Instead of recalculating every feature, an engine XORs out features that stop being true and XORs in the features that become true. For example, if a white knight moves from b1 to c3 and captures a black bishop there, the engine changes the key by XORing out the white knight on b1, XORing out the captured bishop on c3, XORing in the white knight on c3, and XORing the side-to-move value.

Other move types also change state features. Castling can alter king and rook squares and castling rights; a move may create or remove en-passant availability; a promotion replaces a pawn feature with the promoted piece; and an en-passant capture removes a pawn from a square other than the destination. The engine must apply the corresponding feature changes consistently with its position representation. To unmake a move, XOR the same changed values again: XOR’s self-inverse property restores the earlier key.

A practical correctness check is to keep a slow function that recomputes the key from the full position, then compare it with the incrementally maintained key after generated move sequences and after unmaking them. This helps catch omissions in special-move or state handling.

How the transposition table uses the key

Different sequences of moves can reach the same position. A transposition table stores search information keyed by positions so an engine can avoid repeating work. An entry may include a signature, a best or refutation move, search depth, score, bound type and age. A stored score may be exact or an alpha-beta lower or upper bound.

  1. Choose a slot. The engine reduces the key to an index, often with modulo or by masking low bits when the table size is a power of two.
  2. Probe and verify. It checks the slot’s stored signature against the current key, using the stored portion of the key to detect many mismatches.
  3. Decide how to use the entry. If the entry is deep enough and its score bound supports a cutoff, search can reuse that result. Otherwise, a stored move can still help order the moves examined.
  4. Replace when needed. A bounded table cannot hold every position encountered; replacement rules determine which entry remains when a slot is reused.

The key makes lookup efficient, but the search logic still has to interpret depth and bound type correctly. Finding a matching entry does not automatically mean its score is suitable for every search.

Can Zobrist hashes collide?

Yes. Two different kinds of collision matter:

Index collisions are expected

There are far more possible keys than slots in a practical transposition table, so different full keys can reduce to the same index. This is normal in a bounded table. Checking the stored signature helps the engine recognize that a slot contains a different key, after which its replacement policy governs what happens.

Equal full keys are possible

A finite-width key compresses a much larger space of positions, so two distinct positions can theoretically produce the same full signature. A stored full key cannot distinguish that case. The Chess Programming Wiki describes 64-bit keys as usual in modern chess programs; that makes accidental equality unlikely, not mathematically impossible. Collision exposure also depends on table behavior: a replacement-based table does not retain every position the engine has ever searched. Chess Programming Wiki: Transposition Table.

It is therefore accurate to call the key a highly useful fingerprint, not proof that two positions are identical. Signature checks catch many index mismatches, while no finite-width signature eliminates the possibility of equal keys.

Why the method is useful—and what it does not promise

Zobrist hashing is useful because feature values can be combined and updated with simple XOR operations as the board changes. The cited implementation references explain this incremental mechanism and its use with transposition tables, but do not establish a universal measured speedup attributable specifically to Zobrist hashing. Its practical value is the efficient position key and the opportunity to reuse search work, balanced against finite-table replacement and the residual possibility of collisions.

The method has a longer history than modern chess engines: the 1990 ICGA Journal version reprints Zobrist’s report and notes that the method was refined in 1971 for subsets of the chessboard in the Zobrist–Carlson–Kalme chess program. Chess Programming Wiki: Transposition Table.
