The most useful correctness check is an invariant: after every move, the engine’s incrementally updated Zobrist key must equal a key rebuilt from scratch from the same complete position state. Check it before and after moves, then again after unmaking them. This catches many update-path errors, including ones involving castling rights, en passant, promotion, and side to move—but it cannot catch a defect shared by both the update and rebuild routines.
Build a full-recomputation oracle
Keep a reference function that clears a key and reconstructs it from the board and every state feature your engine treats as part of position identity. Compare it with the stored key before making a move, after making it, and after unmaking it.

Keep the rebuild path as separate from the incremental update path as practical. If both use the same faulty helper or omit the same feature, they can agree while both are wrong. Stockfish provides a useful example of the distinction: it has a full computation for a newly established position and incremental key updates in move handling (Stockfish position.cpp).

- Establish a position. Load a valid test position, compute the reference key, and assert that it matches the engine’s stored key before any move is made.
- Make each legal move. Save the complete parent state, apply the move through the engine’s normal make path, rebuild the key from the resulting position, and assert that it equals the incremental key.
- Unmake the move. Rebuild again and compare with the restored key. Also compare the full restored parent state—not just its key—including board, side to move, castling rights, en-passant state, and any counters or other fields relevant to the engine’s identity definition.
- Repeat through lines of play. Validate at every ply in deterministic test suites and randomized legal sequences. When a check fails, record the random seed, starting FEN, move list, expected and actual keys, and build revision so the failure can be reproduced.
Cover the state changes that make chess hashing tricky
A position key generally represents more than piece placement. The python-chess documentation describes a Polyglot-compatible Zobrist hash based on piece placement, castling rights, and en-passant squares (python-chess Polyglot documentation). Your tests should reflect the exact state policy implemented by your engine.

Moves, captures, and side to move
- Exercise quiet moves for every piece class and check that the source-square feature is removed and the destination-square feature is added.
- Capture each piece type and verify that the captured piece’s square feature is removed.
- After each move, verify that the side-to-move feature toggles exactly once. Include null moves if your engine hashes them.
Castling rights
Test a king move, a rook moving from a square that carries castling rights, and a rook being captured on such a square. When the engine’s position-identity rules say rights have changed, the key must change to reflect that—even if piece placement otherwise looks similar.
En-passant state
Test creation of an en-passant target, its expiry after a non-pawn reply, and an actual en-passant capture. Engines do not all use the same convention: some include only an en-passant square when a legal capture is available, while others hash the target state recorded in FEN. The Stockfish implementation and python-chess’s Polyglot documentation illustrate why the convention must be checked rather than assumed. Align the policies before comparing raw keys across libraries.
Promotion
Test each promotion piece your engine supports, including promotion captures. Check that the pawn feature is removed and the promoted piece is represented on the destination square according to the engine’s feature table.
Make/unmake over a full line
Walk several plies, checking the invariant after every make and unmake, then unwind the entire line. Compare the final state with the original position across all identity-relevant fields and the key. A key match alone is not proof that unmake restored every field correctly.
Variants, if supported
Add variant-specific cases only for variants the engine claims to support. Stockfish lists standard chess, Chess960/Fischer Random Chess, and DFRC in its FAQ (Stockfish FAQ). Variant state may require additional hash features: shakmaty’s source, for example, includes state such as promoted markers, pockets, or remaining checks (shakmaty source).
Use other implementations carefully
A second chess library can help as an oracle only when its feature semantics and Zobrist table match yours. The python-chess manual documents a 781-value array and Polyglot-compatible defaults; Stockfish initializes its own deterministic table. Different tables can produce different valid raw keys for the same position.
Before comparing raw values, align the state features included, en-passant convention, castling-right representation, key-table constants and compatibility target, and variant support. If the tables intentionally differ, compare normalized feature sets or compare each implementation’s incremental key with its own full recomputation instead.

For faster diagnosis, add small hand-computed cases using your documented key table: a one-piece-square contribution, a side-to-move change, a castling-right change, and an en-passant change. Include an empty-feature baseline only if your implementation defines one. These cases can expose indexing and XOR mistakes before a longer move sequence does.

Know what the invariant cannot establish
A rebuild-versus-incremental assertion can miss a defect shared by both routines. Keep the rebuild structurally independent where practical, and add direct semantic assertions that verify which features should be present for selected positions.
Even a correct position key does not establish that the transposition table uses it correctly. Indexing, replacement policy, lock or signature checks, and collision handling are separate behaviors to test. Zobrist’s original paper describes an auxiliary method for detecting retrieval errors (Zobrist, “A New Hashing Method With Application for Game Playing,” report 88); shakmaty also notes that constructed collisions are possible despite excellent collision resistance.
Keep correctness tests distinct from playing tests
Perft and engine matches can reveal move-generation or broader regression problems, but they are not direct oracles for the key invariant. Stockfish describes Fishtest as validating code changes through millions of test games (Fishtest documentation); that is evidence of broad regression testing, not proof that a particular Zobrist update path is correct. Keep direct key assertions in unit or property tests, and use strength testing as a separate integration signal.
