Z-Wave Long Range (ZWLR) extends smart-home connectivity by linking each compatible device directly to a central hub in a star network. Classic Z-Wave instead uses a mesh, in which devices can relay messages across multiple hops. The Alliance says the two modes are designed to coexist, so a system can use mesh where relays help and Long Range for suitable direct links.
How Long Range differs from Z-Wave mesh
The key difference is routing, not simply a stronger version of the same network. In classic Z-Wave, a message can travel from device to device until it reaches the controller. In ZWLR, an endpoint communicates directly with the hub; Long Range does not use multi-hop routing. That makes hub placement and the direct radio link especially important. The Z-Wave Alliance overview and Silicon Labs’ selector guide describe the different network arrangements.

The Alliance states a maximum wireless range of 1.5 miles when Long Range operates at full power. In a January 2026 announcement, it described about 1.5 miles as possible under ideal line-of-sight conditions. Treat that as a best-case capability, not an expected indoor range: walls, building materials, interference, antenna placement, and other conditions affect a real link. The cited sources do not establish typical range across ordinary buildings. The Alliance overview and its January 2026 announcement provide the claims and qualifications.

A separate certification measure should not be confused with that maximum. In January 2025, the Alliance added a 700 m benchmark option for Long Range devices and said verified ranges could be added to its product catalog. A certification benchmark is not a promise that a device will achieve the same distance in a particular home. The Alliance certification news and program information records the update.
What hub and devices are needed?
Both ends of the direct link must support ZWLR: the controller or hub and the endpoint device. A Long Range-capable switch cannot make an incompatible hub support Long Range. Check the exact controller model, device certification, and region before choosing hardware.
For example, the Alliance catalog lists the Zooz S2 On/Off Toggle Switch, model ZEN73 800LR, as Long Range-capable for the US/CA/MX region. Its listing says a hub that supports Long Range is required. That example confirms the importance of checking both ends; it does not establish compatibility with every hub or availability in other regions. Consult the Alliance product catalog for the entry and current certified listings.
Which regions support Z-Wave Long Range?
Regional support requires care. Silicon Labs’ overview describes Long Range as available for the US market and says European and APAC support was under evaluation. Separately, the Alliance announced on May 6, 2025, that certification supported EU Long Range frequency verification, allowing product owners to submit devices for EU LR verification. Certification verification is a milestone, not proof of broad retail availability in every European country or for every product. Check the specific device’s certified region and frequency plan, as well as the hub’s support. Silicon Labs’ Long Range overview and the Alliance certification information describe these distinct status points.

The Alliance also reported that certification was updated for the 2026A specification package on June 30, 2026. Because criteria and catalog listings can change, use the current listing rather than assuming that older product information reflects present certification status. The Alliance certification page is the reference for updates.

Long Range is not a universal replacement for mesh. Mesh can be useful when messages need to move around obstacles or across a local area by way of suitable relaying devices. Long Range can suit an endpoint that has a supported direct link to a well-placed hub but would otherwise be far from the mesh’s useful coverage. The Alliance describes the modes as designed to coexist. Its overview explains the coexistence approach.
- Use mesh where the deployment benefits from device-to-device relays and local coverage.
- Consider Long Range for a distant endpoint when both it and the hub support LR and a direct link is viable.
- Check regional certification and frequency compatibility before mixing products.
- Do not assume a device count or a maximum range applies to every hub implementation or installation.
How to interpret capacity and performance claims
The standard-level maximum of 4,000 Long Range nodes is not universal across implementations. Silicon Labs’ report says its implementation supports up to 1,024 LR nodes and up to +20 dBm; its standard-level comparison lists up to 4,000 nodes and up to +30 dBm for the US. Those figures have different scopes, so a real installation should be judged against the specific controller or chipset documentation rather than the standard maximum alone. Silicon Labs’ report gives the implementation and standard comparison.
