YouTube’s creator economy is a set of ways to earn from an audience—not just money from ads. Eligible creators can combine advertising and YouTube Premium revenue with fan payments, shopping and brand partnerships. Which options are available depends on a channel’s eligibility, location, policy status and the terms the creator accepts; hitting a subscriber or view threshold does not guarantee acceptance or income.
How the creator economy fits together
A creator makes videos, Shorts or live content and builds an audience. YouTube’s Partner Program (YPP) can provide access to platform monetization features, while shopping and brand deals create separate commerce opportunities. These are possible routes, not guaranteed stages: a creator may use some, several or none of them.

YPP access is feature-specific. A channel may meet the requirements for some fan-funding features before it qualifies for Watch Page ads or Shorts Feed ad revenue. YouTube reviews the channel as a whole, and each feature has additional requirements. The current official rules and figures below were checked on October 3, 2026; availability and terms can change.
How many subscribers do you need to get paid?
There are two important YPP thresholds, and they unlock different opportunities. The earlier threshold applies only in countries where expanded YPP is available; it does not, by itself, unlock ad-revenue sharing.
#1 Best Overall
| YPP route | Subscriber and activity threshold | What it can unlock |
|---|---|---|
| Earlier access through expanded YPP | 500 subscribers, at least 3 valid public uploads in the previous 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 12 months or 3 million qualified Shorts views in the previous 90 days | Eligible fan-funding and Shopping features, subject to country availability, feature-specific conditions and review |
| Ad and Premium revenue sharing | 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the previous 90 days | Eligibility to apply for Watch Page and Shorts Feed ad revenue sharing and YouTube Premium revenue, subject to acceptance and applicable module terms |
These thresholds are from YouTube’s current YPP overview and expanded-YPP guidance. The Shorts route uses qualified Shorts views; watch time from the Shorts Feed does not count toward the long-form watch-hour route. For either route, YouTube also lists requirements including policy compliance, availability in a supported country or region, no active Community Guidelines strikes, two-step verification, access to advanced features, and an active AdSense for YouTube account linked or set up through YouTube Studio.
Reaching a threshold starts the review process; it is not automatic admission. YouTube evaluates the channel and requires creators to accept the terms for the monetization features they use. Check the Earn tab in YouTube Studio for your channel’s current eligibility and available features.
Where YouTube creator revenue comes from
Watch Page ads
Creators who accept the Watch Page Monetization Module can receive a share of qualifying ad revenue on public video watch pages, including qualifying embedded playback. Earnings depend on the revenue generated under the applicable terms; a view does not have one guaranteed value.
Rank #2
Shorts Feed ads
Shorts ad revenue is pooled and allocated to eligible creators according to their share of views, with music licensing accounted for in the system. It is not a simple split of each individual ad shown next to a Short.
YouTube Premium
Creators may receive a portion of subscription revenue when Premium subscribers watch their content. YouTube does not state a fixed payment per Premium view in its earnings overview.
Rank #3
Fan funding
Channel memberships let eligible viewers pay recurring amounts for channel perks. Super Chat and Super Stickers let viewers pay to highlight messages or images in eligible live chats. Super Thanks lets viewers pay to highlight a message on eligible video or Short comments. Feature access and availability vary.
Shopping and brand partnerships
Shopping can connect a creator’s own merchandise store or, where eligible, allow products from other brands to be tagged. That is a commerce route rather than an ad-revenue share. Brand sponsorships are separate commercial agreements between creators and brands, not part of YouTube’s published module percentages. YouTube announced Creator Partnerships tools in September 2026; availability and rollout may vary.

YouTube’s earnings overview, checked in 2026, publishes different shares for different monetization modules. The percentages have different calculation bases, so they should not be treated as comparable slices of one common pool.
| Feature | Published creator share | How to read the figure |
|---|---|---|
| Watch Page ads | 55% of net Watch Page ad revenue | Applies under the Watch Page Monetization Module to the qualifying revenue described in YouTube’s terms. |
| Shorts Feed ads | 45% of the revenue allocated to the creator from the Creator Pool | The share applies to the creator’s allocation from the pool, not to every ad shown alongside a Short. |
| Channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers and Super Thanks | 70% of net revenue | Applies under the Commerce Product Module to these features’ net revenue. |
These rates describe the relevant module terms, not what a creator will earn per view or in total. YouTube’s partner earnings overview says: “There are no guarantees under the YouTube partner agreement about how much or whether you’ll be paid.” Actual results can vary with views, audience, advertiser demand, feature use and the creator’s applicable agreement. Consult that agreement for the terms that apply to your channel.

Why there is no standard YouTube creator salary
Two channels with similar view counts can have different results because their audiences, viewing patterns, eligible monetization features, ad demand and use of fan funding or commerce differ. The published revenue shares do not provide enough information to calculate a typical creator’s monthly income. The official sources cited here establish platform mechanisms and eligibility rules, not a representative earnings figure.
Keep platform-wide economic figures in perspective, too. YouTube reported that its U.S. creative ecosystem contributed over $60 billion to U.S. GDP in 2025, in a July 16, 2026 post based on analysis backed by Oxford Economics research and YouTube internal data. That is an estimate of the broader U.S. ecosystem—including businesses and activity around creators—not money paid directly to creators and not a measure of typical channel income.

- Separate eligibility from earnings. A threshold can open a review or feature access; it does not predict revenue.
- Know which audience action supports each route. Watch Page and Shorts ads depend on qualifying viewing and ad systems; Premium revenue depends on Premium viewing; fan funding depends on eligible viewers choosing to pay; shopping and sponsorships involve commerce.
- Check feature availability before planning around it. Country, channel status, module terms and feature-specific rules can limit access.
- Use current channel terms for decisions. Rules and product features change. Verify the Earn tab and relevant agreements rather than assuming an older threshold or percentage still applies.
What is changing in 2027?
YouTube’s official Changes to the YouTube Partner Program page announces updates beginning February 1, 2027. As of October 3, 2026, that is a scheduled future change, not a rule already in force. The announcement says creators must review and accept updated terms in YouTube Studio by January 31, 2027 to continue fully monetizing under the changed terms. Check YouTube Studio and the current official terms as the date approaches; do not treat forward-looking statements on that page as current eligibility rules.
Where always-on live video fits
A 24/7 live stream can be one format a channel uses to serve its audience, but keeping a stream running is not itself a monetization route or a guarantee of YPP eligibility. For channels that use uploaded recordings or playlists as a continuous YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video in the cloud, so a computer does not have to stay on; it does not stream from a camera or to platforms other than YouTube. Each slot streams uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. For this specific format, start a StreamNeo free day.
