Usually, yes: leaving Game Pass ends your access to the game, but does not by itself erase your saved progress. If you later buy a compatible version, sign in with the same Xbox profile and connect to Xbox network so your save can sync. Compatibility is not guaranteed across every platform or edition.
If a game was on Game Pass and I buy it after it leaves, will my save still be there?
In general, your progress remains associated with your Xbox profile. Game Pass determines whether you can access a catalog game; save data is separate. Xbox describes game data as stored on the console and in cloud storage, with synchronization when connected to Xbox network. That means losing catalog access does not itself mean a synced save has been deleted. Xbox Support: Manage your game saves

Game Pass access lasts only while the subscription is active and the game remains in the catalog. Buying the game is one way to regain access after it leaves. Catalog availability and subscription offerings can vary by market and plan, so check the local listing for a specific title. Xbox Game Pass (en-GB)
How to continue from your save
- Sign in with the same Xbox profile you used while playing the Game Pass version.
- Connect to Xbox network and give the console time to synchronize before launching the game or switching devices. If you have played offline, the cloud copy may not include your latest progress.
- Install or launch the version you purchased and allow any save synchronization to finish.
- If the game asks you to choose between local and cloud data, do not select a copy automatically. First work out which one contains your latest progress; choosing the older copy could overwrite or replace newer progress.
Xbox says saves can be stored both locally and in the cloud, but this does not establish that every title always has a cloud copy or promise a fixed retention period. Xbox Support: Manage your game saves

Will the save transfer between Xbox, PC, or different editions?
Not necessarily. Microsoft’s XR-052 GDK certification requirement says games using the same TitleID across covered Xbox platforms, devices, or console generations must roam save progress when the player is signed in to Xbox network. Its examples include Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. This is a requirement for titles covered by those rules, not proof that separate PC and console releases or every edition share saves. Xbox Wire describes saves and progress following players across supported devices for cloud-enabled titles, including when access is through Game Pass. That applies to supported games and devices, not every release. Xbox Wire: Xbox August Update, August 28, 2025

What if the save does not appear?
- Confirm you are signed in to the original Xbox profile.
- Connect to Xbox network and allow synchronization to complete.
- Check whether the purchased release is the same game version or a supported cross-save edition.
- If a local/cloud conflict appears, identify the copy with the latest progress before resolving it.
Xbox Community guidance has also said that cloud saves remain available after subscription access ends, but it is a volunteer moderator response rather than formal policy. Microsoft Community answer, January 15, 2023
