Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is the strongest fit if you want a satisfying SNES role-playing game without a sprawling commitment. Nintendo Life estimates a first playthrough of the original SNES game at about 15–17 hours. Other SNES favorites offer different settings and combat styles, but available sources do not establish comparable playtimes for them.
How to choose a shorter SNES RPG
“Short” depends on what you want from the adventure: a tightly focused story, a familiar turn-based battle system, or a game you can share with someone else. A player looking for a good 20–25-hour RPG, for example, may be less concerned with a strict cutoff than with avoiding an “egregious” time commitment. That is one person’s request in a Reddit discussion, not a broad measure of player preferences.

Super Mario RPG: the clearest shorter pick
Original SNES version
Nintendo Life estimates a first-time playthrough of the original SNES version at about 15–17 hours. That is an editorial estimate, not a controlled measurement, and it applies to the original game—not the later remake.

Nintendo Switch remake
The Nintendo Switch version is a remake released on November 17, 2023, rather than a port of the original SNES edition. Nintendo Life estimates its main story at about 10–12 hours and says its challenges and secrets can be completed in under 20 hours. GamesRadar+ gives a different editorial estimate of 12–15 hours for the Switch version in an article dated April 25, 2026. These are separate estimates with different ranges, not a single agreed runtime.
The remake may also suit newcomers: Nintendo’s product page says players new to RPGs or seeking a story-focused experience can use the new Breezy difficulty, which makes battles easier and leveling faster. That feature is described for the Switch remake; it should not be assumed to exist in the original SNES release. Nintendo lists a physical Nintendo Switch edition, which is the remake rather than the original cartridge.

Other SNES RPGs to consider
| Game | Combat and appeal | What is established about playtime or access |
|---|---|---|
| EarthBound | A distinctive setting that starts close to everyday life, then turns strange through its enemies and events. Consider it if you want an unusual modern-world backdrop rather than a conventional fantasy quest. | No comparable playtime estimate is established in the cited sources. A Nintendo Life roundup dated February 9, 2024, listed it on Nintendo Switch Online; check the current catalog and regional availability before relying on that access route. |
| Secret of Mana | An action RPG rather than a turn-based match for players who want to explore and fight alongside a friend. Nintendo Life notes that its story can be played cooperatively. | No comparable playtime estimate is established in the cited sources. |
| Final Fantasy IV (released in North America on SNES as Final Fantasy II) | A conventional alternative for someone looking for a more traditional RPG. The North American SNES title uses the name Final Fantasy II, which can cause confusion when searching for it. | No reliable runtime estimate is established here. A Reddit commenter included it in a roughly 20–25-hour discussion, but that is anecdotal rather than a verified completion-time figure. |
Which one fits your plans?
- Want the best-supported bounded commitment? Choose Super Mario RPG and use the estimate for the version you intend to play.
- Want an unusual, near-modern setting? Try EarthBound, but confirm current regional availability if you plan to play through Nintendo Switch Online.
- Want cooperative action combat? Secret of Mana offers a different, shareable adventure; it is not a turn-based recommendation.
- Want a traditional RPG option? Consider Final Fantasy IV, while treating the 20–25-hour mention as one commenter’s estimate rather than a dependable runtime.
Sources and estimate caveats
The playtimes above are editorial estimates, not study results or controlled measurements. Nintendo Life’s Super Mario RPG guide and GamesRadar+’s Switch estimate do not give matching ranges, so they are presented separately. The sources do not establish comparable completion times for EarthBound, Secret of Mana, and Final Fantasy IV.
