Check the official backward-compatible games catalog for the exact game before buying a disc or planning an installation. Ownership of an older Xbox game does not guarantee that it will work on a newer console.
Which Xbox generations work on each console?
Compatibility depends on both the console and the individual game. It is not a blanket feature that makes every title from an older generation playable.

| Console | Older games supported | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox One | Selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games | Check the exact title in Xbox’s catalog; unsupported games will not become playable just because you own them. |
| Xbox Series X|S | Most Xbox One games, plus selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games | Support and enhancements vary by game. Series S is digital-only and cannot play physical discs. |
The official catalog groups games by Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Original Xbox and lets you filter by generation. Its entries can change or be presented differently over time, so use the live catalog to confirm a particular title rather than relying on an old list.
That distinction matters when someone says a console is “backward compatible.” The feature does not mean that every game from an earlier Xbox generation is supported, nor that a compatible game necessarily includes every feature it had originally. The reliable answer is title-specific: identify the exact release you want, check its generation and catalog listing, and then consider how you own it and which console you plan to use.

How to check whether a specific game is compatible
- Open the Xbox backward-compatible games catalog.
- Filter by the game’s original generation, then search or browse for the exact title.
- Confirm the title itself appears in the catalog before buying a disc or counting on a digital copy working.
- Check the game’s listed enhancements separately if frame rate or image quality matters to you; compatibility does not mean every enhancement applies.
Xbox’s catalog is the most practical title-by-title check. A game being part of a franchise, available on another Xbox generation, or owned in an account does not prove that this specific release is supported.
Be precise about the game rather than checking only its series name. The 2021 announcement, for example, named the Max Payne series and the F.E.A.R. franchise among the additions, but an old list of announcement examples is not a substitute for the live catalog. Xbox’s current page provides filters for Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Original Xbox games, but the catalog entries did not render in the captured view used for this article. For that reason, this guide does not claim to be a complete current game list.
How to install and play a compatible game
Digital games you own
If you own a digital game that is on the compatibility list, it should appear in the console’s Ready to Install area. Select it to download and install. Backward compatibility has no separate fee for a game you already own, but that does not make an unsupported game compatible or give you ownership of a game you have not purchased.
There are two separate checks here: the game must be supported, and your account must own the digital copy. The fact that an older game exists in the catalog does not mean it is automatically free to download for every player. Conversely, owning a digital copy does not bypass the compatibility requirement. If the title is supported and your account owns it, look for it in Ready to Install rather than paying a separate backward-compatibility charge.
Games on disc
On a console with a disc drive, insert the supported Xbox 360 or Original Xbox disc to download the game. The disc must remain in the drive when you play: it acts as proof of ownership even though the game is installed on the console. A disc alone is not sufficient if that exact title is not in the compatibility catalog.
In other words, inserting an older game disc is not a way to make an unsupported title work, and the disc is not simply a one-time installer that can be put away afterward. First verify that the game is in the catalog, then make sure the console configuration you are considering has a drive. Keep the supported disc available for play after installation.

Series S and physical media
Xbox Series S is digital-only and has no physical disc playback. If you need to use Xbox 360 or Original Xbox discs, choose a console configuration with a disc drive and verify the exact game’s support before relying on it. Do not assume a console has a drive based only on its generation name; check the specific configuration.

A Series S owner needs a compatible digital title owned by the account, while someone relying on an older physical copy needs a drive-equipped console and a title that is listed as supported. An Xbox Series X is a relevant option for a player who wants to use compatible older discs, but confirm the specific configuration before purchasing rather than inferring disc support from the product family name.
Examples of Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games added in 2021
On November 15, 2021, Xbox announced more than 70 additions to its backward-compatibility catalog. Examples included the Max Payne series, the F.E.A.R. franchise, Skate 2, Dead or Alive Ultimate, Star Wars: Jedi Knight II, Star Wars: Starfighter, and games in the Otogi franchise. Xbox said those additions could be played on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S digitally or from disc. These are historical examples, not a current complete catalog; check each title in the live list before making a purchase or installation plan.
The scale of that announcement is useful context, but it should not be mistaken for a promise of ongoing additions. Xbox reported adding more than 70 Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games on that date. That number describes the November 15, 2021 release, not the total size of the catalog or the number of games that will be added in the future.
That announcement described the release as the “latest and final addition” to the program, citing licensing, legal, and technical constraints. It said Xbox had reached the limit of its ability to bring past games into the catalog. That statement records Xbox’s position on November 15, 2021; the sources cited here do not establish whether it has changed since.
Xbox put the constraint this way: “we have reached the limit of our ability to bring new games to the catalog from the past due to licensing, legal and technical constraints.” It is an official Xbox statement in the Xbox Wire announcement, rather than a quote attributed to a named individual. This helps explain why a popular older game should not be assumed to be added simply because players want it or because another game in the same series is supported.

What can improve on Xbox Series X|S?
Some compatible older games can benefit from FPS Boost, resolution enhancements, or Auto HDR. These features are title-specific, not automatic guarantees for every game in the catalog. Auto HDR can add an HDR presentation to older SDR games when used with a supported display, but it does not turn every game into a remaster.
- FPS Boost: Raises the frame rate for selected games. Xbox reported in its November 2021 announcement that 11 titles added that day received FPS Boost, while another 26 titles already in the catalog were enabled for it.
- Resolution improvements: Xbox said many of the November 2021 additions received resolution enhancements. For Original Xbox games, that announcement cited resolution multipliers on supported displays of 4× on Series X and Xbox One X, 3× on Series S, and 2× on Xbox One S and Xbox One. These figures describe the announced support for Original Xbox games, not a universal guarantee for all compatible titles.
- Auto HDR: Xbox said all games in the November 2021 additions would receive Auto HDR on supported displays. The feature and display support still matter; do not infer that every older game, or every screen, will show HDR.
In the same 2021 announcement, Xbox said FPS Boost doubled the original frame rate, up to 60 frames per second, for 11 titles. That is a dated, title-specific claim rather than a promise that all compatible games run at 60 FPS.
For a practical comparison, check the particular benefit you care about instead of treating “enhanced” as one all-or-nothing label. FPS Boost concerns frame rate; resolution enhancements concern image resolution; Auto HDR changes the presentation of supported older SDR games on a supported display. A game may be compatible without receiving every one of those features, and a feature announced for a specific batch of games should not be generalized to the rest of the catalog.

Original Xbox features that do not carry over
Original Xbox games run as the original games rather than as remasters. Backward compatibility preserves access to supported titles, but it does not recreate every online feature or transfer every part of the original experience.
- Original Xbox Live multiplayer and in-game marketplaces: These are unavailable through backward compatibility.
- Offline multiplayer and system link: These work only if the original game supported them.
- Achievements: Original Xbox titles do not gain Xbox achievements through backward compatibility.
- Saves: Original saves do not transfer to Xbox One or Series X|S. Saves created on Xbox One or Series X|S can move between those consoles through the cloud.
These limits are worth checking before planning a return to an old game. Compatibility can let you launch a supported title, but it does not restore the Original Xbox Live service or its in-game marketplace. Likewise, a player should not expect an old Original Xbox save to carry forward, and should not assume that a supported Original Xbox title will award Xbox achievements. Offline multiplayer or system link depends on what the original title supported; backward compatibility does not add those modes to a game that lacked them.

Choose based on the game and how you own it
| Your priority | What to do |
|---|---|
| Play a digital game you already own | Confirm the exact title is in the catalog and that the account owns it; then look for it in Ready to Install. |
| Play an old physical disc | Confirm the title is listed and use a console configuration with a disc drive. Series S cannot play discs. |
| Find a particular Xbox 360 or Original Xbox game | Search the official catalog before buying, since support is selective. |
| Get higher frame rates or improved visuals | Check the individual game for FPS Boost, resolution enhancements, or Auto HDR; support differs by title. |
| Use original online play, achievements, or saves | Account for the Original Xbox limitations above before expecting those features to carry forward. |
A sensible order is to start with the exact game, check the catalog, decide whether you will use a digital copy or a disc, and then verify the console configuration. Only after those basic compatibility and ownership questions are settled should you compare game-specific enhancements. This avoids buying an older disc for a digital-only console or expecting a visual feature that the particular title does not support.

Xbox says many games from a previously owned catalog are included in Game Pass, but availability for a particular title can change. Check the current subscription catalog for that game rather than assuming it is included. A subscription is a separate way a title may be available; it does not change the compatibility rules or guarantee that a particular older game is currently included.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play every Xbox 360 or Original Xbox game on Xbox One or Series X|S?
No. Xbox backward compatibility is selective. Xbox One supports selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games, and Series X|S supports selected titles from those generations plus most Xbox One games. Check the exact title in Xbox’s live catalog before buying or installing it.
Do I have to pay extra to play a compatible game I already own?
Xbox describes backward compatibility as free for games you already have, so there is no separate compatibility fee. The game still has to be supported, and you need to own it or otherwise have access to it. Backward compatibility does not make unsupported games playable or make every title free to acquire.
Can I use an Xbox 360 or Original Xbox disc on Series S?
No. Series S is digital-only and has no physical disc playback. To play an older physical disc, use a console configuration with a disc drive, confirm the exact game is in the compatibility catalog, and keep the disc in the drive to play after installation.
Does the disc install the whole game, or do I need it afterward?
A supported disc is used to download the game to the console, but it must remain in the drive when you play. It serves as proof of ownership. A disc will not make a title compatible if that game is not listed in the catalog.
Best Value
Will an older compatible game run at 60 FPS or have HDR?
Not necessarily. FPS Boost, resolution enhancements, and Auto HDR vary by title, and Auto HDR also depends on a supported display. Xbox’s November 2021 announcement cited FPS Boost doubling the original frame rate up to 60 FPS for 11 titles, but that is not a guarantee for every compatible game.
Do Original Xbox games keep their online multiplayer, achievements, and saves?
Original Xbox Live online multiplayer and in-game marketplaces are unavailable through backward compatibility, and Original Xbox titles do not gain Xbox achievements. Original saves do not transfer to Xbox One or Series X|S. Offline multiplayer and system link are supported only when the original game supported them; saves made on Xbox One or Series X|S can move between those consoles through the cloud.
Will Xbox keep adding older games to the catalog?
In its November 15, 2021 announcement, Xbox called that day’s release the “latest and final addition” and cited licensing, legal, and technical constraints. That records Xbox’s statement at the time; the reviewed sources do not establish whether its position has changed since.

Are backward-compatible games included with Game Pass?
Xbox says many games from a previously owned catalog are included in Game Pass, but availability changes and the reviewed sources do not confirm current title-level availability. Check the current Game Pass catalog for the particular game rather than assuming it is included.
The Bottom Line
Xbox backward compatibility is useful, but it is game-specific: verify the exact title in Xbox’s catalog, confirm you own or can access it, and match the console to your format. Digital copies can appear in Ready to Install; supported discs require a drive and stay in it for play, so Series S cannot use them. Treat enhancements and Original Xbox online, achievement, and save behavior as title- and feature-specific rather than assuming the old experience carries over unchanged.
