If glasses-free 3D matters to you, compare New Nintendo 3DS-family models and check the requirements for the games you want. The family is no longer manufactured, so buying one is generally a used-hardware decision.
Start with the kind of 3DS experience you want
The main choice is whether you want stereoscopic 3D. If you do not, the New Nintendo 2DS XL offers a straightforward route to playing 3DS games: Nintendo’s product page says it plays all Nintendo 3DS games in 2D. Compare the models against your actual games
Do not choose solely by the name printed on a listing or by a seller’s broad claim that a console “plays 3DS.” Write down the games you intend to play, then check the exact system model and any model-specific requirements for each one. This is particularly important for titles that require a New-system model.
- Want 2D only? The New Nintendo 2DS XL is a strong candidate. Nintendo states that it plays all Nintendo 3DS games in 2D.
- Want stereoscopic 3D? Compare New Nintendo 3DS-family models and verify the feature on the precise model being sold.
- Have a particular game in mind? Confirm its requirements against the exact console model rather than relying on a family name or an incomplete listing.
- Considering emulation? Treat it as a separate, game-by-game decision. A device’s general ability to run emulators does not establish that it runs a given 3DS game well or at all.
The New Nintendo 2DS XL adds a C Stick and ZL/ZR buttons. Those controls are useful features to note when comparing listings, but they do not replace checking each game’s requirements.

Assess the used console, not just the model name
Nintendo says manufacture of the Nintendo 3DS family has ended. That makes the condition and completeness of the individual used unit central to the decision. No current second-hand price or supply level is established here, so there is no reliable basis for naming a cheapest model or a price that counts as a good deal.

- Hinges: Check for looseness, cracking, or resistance that makes opening and positioning the screens difficult.
- Screens: Look for visible damage, pressure marks, dead areas, or display problems. Ask for clear photos of both screens while powered on if you cannot inspect the console in person.
- Buttons and controls: Test the buttons, circle pad, and any model-specific controls such as the C Stick and ZL/ZR buttons. A listing photo cannot show whether an input works reliably.
- Cartridge slot: If you plan to use game cards, ask the seller to demonstrate that the slot reads a game. Do not assume it works just because the console powers on.
- Battery and charging: Ask how long the console holds a charge and whether it charges reliably. A brief power-on demonstration does not establish battery condition.
- Included items: Check whether a compatible charger and stylus are included, and confirm what storage is supplied. No current official listing establishes that every used listing includes these items.
Reduce purchase risk
Ask for the exact model identification, recent photographs, a description of known faults, and confirmation that the seller has tested the controls and game-card reading if relevant. Review the return policy before paying. If the seller cannot demonstrate a key feature you need, treat that as unresolved rather than assuming it works.

Regional model is another item to verify against the games and use case you have in mind. No current official region-by-region availability or compatibility details are published, so do not infer those from a listing title alone. Confirm the precise model and any relevant requirements before purchase.
Know what still works after Nintendo’s service changes
Buying a 3DS-family console is not the same as buying into a fully active online ecosystem. Nintendo ended eShop purchases and free-content downloads on March 27, 2023. Nintendo said that previously purchased games and DLC, along with software updates, could still be redownloaded for the foreseeable future. “For the foreseeable future” is not a guarantee of indefinite availability.

- StreetPass: This uses local communication and remains available.
- SpotPass: This uses online communication and is no longer available.
- Redownloads and updates: Nintendo said these remained possible for the foreseeable future; do not treat that wording as a permanent service guarantee.
If access to a particular digital game or DLC is essential, check its availability on the console and account you plan to use before relying on it. New eShop purchases are no longer an option.

Make the decision in a few checks
- List the games you want. Note any title-specific requirements, especially for games that require a New-system model.
- Choose your display preference. Pick the New Nintendo 2DS XL if 2D suits you; compare New Nintendo 3DS-family models if you specifically want stereoscopic 3D.
- Match games to the exact model. Confirm compatibility and requirements for each intended game rather than relying on a broad listing description.
- Evaluate the specific used unit. Check hinges, screens, controls, cartridge slot, battery, charger, stylus, storage, and the seller’s return terms.
- Account for discontinued services. Plan around the end of eShop purchases and online communication, and do not depend on future redownload access being indefinite.
- Buy only when key uncertainties are resolved. If a feature you need cannot be verified, ask for evidence or choose a listing with clearer testing and return terms.
When a generic handheld is the wrong shortcut
An Android or PC handheld may be appealing if you want one device for several gaming platforms, but that is not the same as native 3DS-family compatibility. Emulation is its own compatibility question: results can depend on the specific game and device, and no current official information verifies performance for any emulator or handheld. If your priority is dependable access to 3DS games, choose within the Nintendo 3DS family rather than assuming a general-purpose handheld will cover the full library.
