Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) is Microsoft’s framework for building desktop applications that run on Windows. It combines a declarative interface system called XAML with .NET code and provides controls, data binding, layout, graphics, animation, documents, media, and text features. WPF is still receiving version-specific updates, but it is not a cross-platform user-interface framework.
What WPF is used for
WPF is designed for Windows desktop software: applications with windows, controls, menus, forms, and other graphical interfaces. It is part of .NET, so a WPF application can also use other .NET APIs. Microsoft describes WPF as resolution-independent and built around a vector-based rendering engine.

Its capabilities go beyond displaying buttons and text. WPF includes layout tools, styles and templates, data binding and validation, 2D and 3D graphics, animation, documents, media, and typography. Those features let developers build interfaces whose appearance and behavior respond to application data and user actions.
How WPF applications work
XAML describes the interface
Developers commonly use XAML, an XML-based markup language, to declare windows, controls, shapes, and other interface elements. When the application runs, WPF turns that markup into objects. This makes it possible to keep much of the interface description separate from the code that handles its behavior.

.NET code provides behavior
WPF uses .NET types, commonly in the System.Windows namespace. Code can set properties, call methods, and respond to events; code associated with a XAML file is often called code-behind. WPF also provides constructs such as dependency properties and routed events for managing values and interactions in the interface.
Binding connects data to interface elements
Data binding connects properties in the interface to application data. WPF’s data system also supports validation, sorting, filtering, grouping, and data templates. That can reduce the amount of code needed to keep a display in sync with its underlying data.

Graphics scale through device-independent units
WPF measures layout in device-independent pixels, defined as 1/96 of an inch, and can scale for system DPI. It supports vector shapes and transformations and can use hardware acceleration. These are framework capabilities, not a guarantee of a particular application’s speed or visual quality.

Modern .NET supports multiple operating systems, but WPF itself runs only on Windows. A WPF application therefore does not meet a requirement to run its user interface on macOS or Linux without a different approach. Microsoft’s WPF overview explains the framework’s scope and features.

Modern .NET WPF and .NET Framework WPF are distinct
Microsoft documents WPF for modern .NET separately from WPF for .NET Framework 4. The two lines differ in project formats, supported APIs, and migration considerations. Before starting a project or moving an existing one, identify which line it targets and check its APIs, tooling, and deployment requirements in Microsoft’s WPF documentation. The modern .NET implementation is open source; that does not make WPF cross-platform.

WPF is not inherently obsolete: Microsoft continues to publish version-specific WPF updates. The release overview includes .NET 10 and .NET 11 Preview material, and Microsoft says .NET 10 was released in November 2025. Preview features and stable releases are not interchangeable, so check the target version before relying on a feature or planning deployment. Whether WPF is suitable depends on the application’s operating-system requirements, existing .NET code, desktop controls and data needs, graphics, accessibility, migration effort, tooling, and support lifecycle. The framework’s documented feature set does not establish that it is the best choice for every project, and there is no single universal ranking implied by its continued development.
