Call of Duty TVs: How to Check 4K 120Hz and VRR Support

For Call of Duty on a current console, start with a TV that supports native 120Hz, 4K at 120Hz on the HDMI input you’ll use, variable refresh rate (VRR), and a low-latency game mode. That combination can improve responsiveness and motion handling, but the game’s frame rate depends on its title, mode, and platform. PC players may benefit from higher refresh rates; for console-only use, 120Hz is usually the more relevant target.

What matters most for Call of Duty

Prioritize features that affect the signal your console or PC can actually send. A TV’s advertised peak refresh rate is only useful if the source, game mode, resolution, and selected HDMI port support it together.

  • Native 120Hz: Current PlayStation and Xbox consoles can output up to 120 frames per second in supported games and modes. A 120Hz TV is needed to display that mode, but it does not make every Call of Duty title or mode run at 120 fps. Which? explains the console and resolution caveats.
  • 4K at 120Hz: Check that the TV can handle both at once on the exact input you plan to use. Some TVs with 120Hz panels reduce resolution at that refresh rate.
  • VRR and ALLM: VRR can help manage fluctuations in frame delivery; Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) can switch the TV into a lower-latency mode. Confirm that both features are supported on the relevant port. An HDMI 2.1 label alone does not guarantee every feature on every input.
  • Low-latency game mode: Use the TV’s game mode when playing. Input lag varies by model and settings. Tom’s Guide offers 10ms or lower as general guidance for competitive online gaming, not as a universal esports standard.
  • Room fit: Panel type, brightness, reflections, screen size, and viewing distance matter alongside gaming specifications.

Choose the panel for your room and priorities

OLED for contrast and motion clarity

OLED is worth considering if you want strong contrast and fast pixel response. RTINGS highlights OLED’s contrast and motion-clarity strengths, while TechRadar also notes OLED response-time advantages. Room brightness and reflections still affect how comfortable the image is to watch.

LCD or mini-LED for brighter rooms and value

A bright room, a preferred screen size, or budget may make LCD or mini-LED a better fit. TechRadar notes mini-LED brightness and price advantages. Compare real-world brightness and reflection handling for the model and size you intend to buy rather than choosing by panel label alone.

When higher than 120Hz is useful

For console-only play, refresh rates above 120Hz are usually not the deciding benefit. They may matter for PC gaming if the PC, game, resolution, and TV input can all deliver the higher refresh rate. A 165Hz or 144Hz specification does not improve console play beyond the console’s supported output.

Samsung S95H OLED RTINGS’ top gaming-TV selection in its 2026 guide; four HDMI 2.1 ports supporting up to 4K at 165Hz, plus FreeSync, G-SYNC, and HDMI Forum VRR. Its listed refresh ceiling is most relevant to compatible PC setups; confirm performance and supported features for the exact input and size.
LG C6 OLED RTINGS’ upper mid-range example; four HDMI 2.1 ports, up to 4K at 165Hz, common VRR formats, and 42–65-inch sizes in the version discussed. Check the exact size and local model naming; larger versions and regional availability may differ.
Hisense U7SG RTINGS’ lower mid-range example; four HDMI 2.1 ports and 165Hz for PC use. RTINGS notes slower response and more motion blur than its OLED examples, a trade-off to consider for competitive play.
Samsung S90F Tom’s Guide lists 4K resolution, 120Hz native refresh (up to 144Hz), and four HDMI 2.1 ports. Verify the particular size and regional SKU, plus VRR, ALLM, and 4K/120Hz operation on your chosen port.

How to check a TV before you buy

  1. Match the TV to the source. For a console, look for native 120Hz and support for 4K/120Hz. For a PC, compare the refresh rate you can realistically output at your intended resolution.
  2. Check the specific HDMI input. Confirm that it supports the required resolution and refresh rate, VRR, and ALLM. Do not assume all ports on a TV behave alike.
  3. Look up the exact SKU and size. Feature sets and even model naming can vary by size and market. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for the version being sold locally.
  4. Consider your room and seating distance. Choose a size that suits where you sit, and account for room brightness and reflections when weighing OLED against LCD or mini-LED.
  5. Compare measured game-mode latency and motion. Use independent testing for the exact model when available. Remember that a TV’s test results can depend on picture settings and signal format.
  6. Check the game’s supported mode. The TV can display only the signal the console or PC and the particular Call of Duty mode provide.

Why “120Hz” and “HDMI 2.1” are not enough by themselves

A headline refresh-rate number does not tell you whether a TV sustains 4K at that rate. Likewise, an HDMI 2.1 marking does not, by itself, establish that the port supports the VRR and ALLM behavior you want. Confirm the full combination—resolution, refresh, and gaming features—on the input used for play. Which? specifically warns that some 120Hz TVs restrict resolution at that frame rate.

Should professional players choose a different TV?

The same core checks apply to competitive and casual players: supported refresh and resolution, low-latency game mode, VRR, and the right screen for the room. A review guide’s latency recommendation is useful context, not an official Call of Duty or tournament requirement. The reviewed sources do not establish Call of Duty-specific frame rates across all console and display modes, so do not treat a TV specification as proof that a particular game mode outputs 120 fps.
