The WNBA’s 2026 playoff field is the league’s top eight teams, regardless of conference. Teams are seeded by regular-season record; tied records are separated by the league’s ordered tiebreakers, beginning with head-to-head results. The rules also determine home-court advantage. Here’s how each step works and where each seed fits in the bracket.
Who qualifies for the 2026 WNBA playoffs?
The top eight teams across the league qualify, regardless of conference. Conference standings do not limit which teams can make the field. The WNBA’s 2026 Postseason FAQ says teams are seeded by regular-season records.

Each team plays 44 regular-season games in 2026. Because every team plays the same number of games, sorting by win-loss record produces the same order as sorting by winning percentage. The league says the schedule will expand to 50 games per team beginning in 2027; that is a planned change, not the 2026 schedule. See the official FAQ for those season-specific details.

If teams have the same regular-season record, the WNBA applies these criteria in order. The league’s standings page says the procedure is used for playoff eligibility and home-court advantage.

- Head-to-head record: The tied team with the better record in games against the other tied team or teams advances in the comparison.
- Winning percentage against .500-or-better teams: Compare each tied team’s winning percentage against all opponents that finish the regular season at .500 or better. Because an opponent’s final record is not known until the season ends, this criterion may not be settled earlier.
- Head-to-head point differential: Compare points scored minus points allowed in games among the tied teams.
- Overall point differential: Compare points scored minus points allowed against all opponents.
The criteria are sequential: the league moves to the next one only if the preceding step does not resolve the tie.
How does the league break a tie among three or more teams?
For a multi-team tie, the league eliminates as many teams as possible at each tiebreak step. Once one or more teams are eliminated, it restarts at the first criterion for the teams that remain tied. This means a comparison is not necessarily a single pass through all four criteria: the group still tied can change, and head-to-head record is reconsidered for that smaller group.

How does seeding set the 2026 playoff bracket?
The 2026 postseason has three rounds. In the first round, the bracket pairs seeds 1 and 8, 4 and 5 in one half, and 3 and 6, 2 and 7 in the other. The WNBA’s format announcement says teams are not reseeded after the first round, so the bracket path is fixed rather than rearranged according to which teams advance.

These lengths are for the 2026 postseason; use the league’s official playoffs page for that season’s format. Higher seeds receive the stronger position in the opening matchups, while the tiebreak procedure can also settle home-court advantage.
