If Wi-Fi is stronger near your range extender but downloads are slower, first compare the same device on the extender and router from the same spot. If the extender is the problem, check its connection back to the router, reposition it within router range, and verify which network your device joined. A stronger signal on the client does not mean the extender itself has a strong upstream connection.
1. Compare extender and router speeds fairly
- Pause streaming, downloads, video calls, and other high-bandwidth activity on your network.
- Run an internet speed test on one client device while it is connected to the extender.
- From the same location, connect that device to the router’s Wi-Fi and run the test again.
If both results are poor, investigate the internet connection or router before focusing on the extender. If only one device is slow, the issue may be specific to that client’s Wi-Fi behavior. Neither result by itself identifies the precise cause. TP-Link’s slow-speed troubleshooting guide also suggests checking the client’s Wi-Fi link speed about 2–3 meters from the extender, if you know how to view it. Link speed measures the local wireless connection; it is not the same as measured internet throughput.

2. Check the extender’s connection to the router
Look at the extender’s signal indicator or status page, then check the manual for that exact model. Indicator meanings vary: TP-Link says a solid signal LED indicates a successful router connection on the models covered by its working-status guide, while color or bars may separately show signal strength on some models. A poor-signal warning is a reason to try moving the extender closer to the router; do not assume a particular color means the same thing across models or brands.

3. Reposition the extender and reduce interference
Start between the router and the area with weak coverage, but move the extender toward the router if its upstream signal is poor. TP-Link recommends placing it roughly halfway between the router and weak-signal area, while keeping it within router coverage. NETGEAR likewise says a halfway position may help with thick walls, provided the extender remains within range of the router. The right spot depends on the layout, model, and obstructions; a midpoint is a starting point, not a guaranteed distance.
- Raise the extender to around the router’s height. TP-Link’s placement article suggests around four feet for the models and conditions it discusses.
- If the extender has external antennas, keep them vertical where applicable.
- Where practical, avoid thick walls, cabinets, masonry, large metal or reflective surfaces such as mirrors, and nearby devices that can interfere, including microwaves, cordless phones, refrigerators, and baby monitors.
These are manufacturer placement recommendations, not guaranteed fixes for every home. See TP-Link’s placement guidance for its model-specific context.

4. Make sure your device joined the extender
For troubleshooting, TP-Link recommends giving the extender a different Wi-Fi name from the router so you can tell which connection the client is using. This is a diagnostic aid, not a speed upgrade. Check the connected network name before each test; otherwise, you may be measuring the router when you intended to test the extender, or vice versa.

If distance or obstacles prevent a stable wireless connection from router to extender, a wired link may be an option. TP-Link’s guidance is: “If a stable wireless connection is not possible due to obstacles or distance, use Access Point (AP) mode with an Ethernet cable running from the router to the extender.” This requires an Ethernet run and an extender model that supports AP mode. Put the extender near the coverage area, connect it to the router by Ethernet, and follow the exact model’s manual to enable access point mode. Consult TP-Link’s access-point setup guidance for its instructions.

6. Avoid chaining extenders
NETGEAR cautions that a connection routed from one extender through another and then to the router can become sluggish. Its range-extender guidance recommends a single hop from each extender to the main router rather than daisy-chaining extenders.
