Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) reach compatible Samsung Galaxy phones through participating wireless providers, which broadcast government-authorized alerts from cell towers serving the affected area. You do not sign up or need to be individually texted. To find the controls on a U.S. Galaxy phone, open Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Wireless emergency alerts; labels and available switches can vary by device, carrier and software version.
What a Wireless Emergency Alert is—and isn’t
WEA is the U.S. public-alert system for sending geographically targeted, text-like messages to compatible mobile devices. Authorized federal, Tribal, state, local and territorial officials can issue alerts through FEMA’s Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS). Participating wireless providers transmit them from cell towers to phones in the targeted area. The FCC describes the system in its 2025 WEA order.

WEA commonly uses cell broadcast rather than individual text messages. That means recipients do not register or subscribe, and delivery is designed to avoid the network congestion associated with sending one-to-one texts. It is separate from Samsung Emergency SOS: WEA is an incoming public alert, while Emergency SOS is a user-triggered phone feature involving the user’s emergency contacts. FEMA explains WEA in its IPAWS Best Practices Guide.
What happens when an alert arrives
A WEA appears prominently and uses a distinctive attention signal and vibration. The alert may include protective instructions and, depending on the message and handset capabilities, links or other supported features. The exact sound level, screen design and link behavior are not identical on every Galaxy model.

Why an alert may be short
FEMA’s April 2022 guidance says the 90-character short message remains required for compatibility, while a longer message of up to 360 characters is optional. A short alert therefore does not necessarily mean the Samsung phone malfunctioned; a handset or network with older capabilities may receive only the shorter version. These figures describe FEMA’s 2022 guidance, not a guarantee that every device supports the longer format. See IPAWS Tip 41.
Where to find WEA settings on a U.S. Samsung phone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Advanced settings.
- Tap Wireless emergency alerts and review the available switches.
This is the path in Samsung’s U.S. Galaxy support instructions. If a menu differs, search Settings for “Wireless emergency alerts.” Labels and options can change by Galaxy model, One UI or Android version, and carrier. Samsung’s page is not a model-by-model compatibility guide.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Some alerts cannot be turned off through ordinary consumer controls. Samsung says Presidential alerts cannot be disabled; FEMA likewise says the public may opt out of WEA messages except for a National Emergency Message. Do not assume every alert category has a switch or that all WEA can be silenced. Samsung’s U.K. Emergency Alerts instructions describe another country’s system and should not be used as the U.S. menu guide.
How location targeting works—and why alerts can spill beyond an area
Alert originators specify a geographic area, and providers transmit the target information from cell sites serving it. Newer phones with device-based geofencing can compare their position with the alert boundary and suppress alerts outside it. FEMA’s April 2022 guidance describes enhanced geo-targeting as intended to limit overshoot to 0.1 mile (528 feet) when the provider and phone support it.

That precision is not universal. Older devices may rely on less precise estimates, and phones without location services available may not apply enhanced device-based filtering. FEMA’s 2022 guidance says those phones could receive alerts tens of miles outside the target, depending on terrain and tower placement. This is a documented limitation, not a statement about every current Galaxy phone. Disabling location services can affect enhanced filtering accuracy; it does not mean WEA reception in general requires location services to be enabled.
FEMA’s 2022 Tip 41 also reported that 34% of active smartphones supported enhanced geo-targeting, citing a CTIA finding from 2021. That is a historical figure, not a current adoption rate for smartphones or Samsung phones.

Why a Galaxy may not receive an alert
WEA is not a guarantee that every phone in every circumstance will receive every alert. Reception depends on factors including device capability, participating-provider service, network reach, the phone’s power state and its settings. Samsung’s U.S. support information does not establish which WEA capabilities every Galaxy model and carrier combination supports. Check the exact model and carrier for compatibility details rather than relying on the Galaxy name alone.

The FCC’s 2025 WEA rulemaking addresses device capabilities, but rollout and implementation timing can depend on rule dates. Do not assume an older handset supports every newer feature, such as enhanced geo-targeting or longer messages.

Practical checks before relying on WEA
- Use the U.S. Galaxy settings path above, or search Settings for “Wireless emergency alerts,” and review the available switches.
- Confirm compatibility information for your specific Galaxy model and wireless carrier; support varies and a brand name alone does not establish every WEA capability.
- Keep in mind that location services can affect enhanced geographic filtering accuracy, while they are not a general prerequisite for WEA reception.
- When an alert appears, read its protective instructions rather than assuming a short message is a phone error or an alert beyond the boundary is necessarily misissued.
