Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWine clubs typically personalize recommendations in a loop: you describe what you like, try a selection, then rate or comment on it so later picks can reflect your feedback. The details vary. Some services describe algorithm-assisted matching, some put a human sommelier in the selection process, and others combine personal signals with broader community ratings. A personalized match predicts fit for your palate; it is not an objective score of a wine’s quality.
How a wine club builds an initial profile
A new member’s first recommendations often start with a quiz or preference questions. These can capture stated likes and dislikes, interest in trying unfamiliar wines, and practical choices such as budget or shipment frequency. That gives the service a starting point before it has much feedback from the member’s own ratings.

A quiz is only a snapshot of what someone can report in advance. It cannot establish how the member will respond to wines they have not tried, and a preference can change over time. Initial recommendations should therefore be understood as a first estimate, not a settled description of someone’s palate.
How ratings can change later recommendations
After a member tries the wines, ratings or comments may become additional inputs. Firstleaf describes a short quiz that creates a tasting profile, followed by thumbs-up or thumbs-down ratings that refine the profile and inform curated club orders. Its current how-it-works page says each rating is passed through “13 billion data points.” That is Firstleaf’s company claim; the page does not explain what those data points are or independently establish that they produce more accurate recommendations. What Firstleaf’s WinePrint shows
Firstleaf’s WinePrint is a visible example of how ratings can be turned into a profile. The company says it can surface preferences such as body, sweetness, acidity, tannins, fruit intensity, tasting notes, varietals, and regions. It describes separate red- and white-wine profiles, with more profile detail as a member rates more wines. The help article says WinePrint and club recommendations are based on Firstleaf wines the member rated—not every wine they drink or ratings from other services. Firstleaf: WinePrint and feedback.
Personalization can involve a person, an algorithm, or both
Not every service describes personalization as an automated recommendation system. Wine.com’s Picked page says a personal sommelier reviews a member’s preferences and chooses six bottles, with feedback on previously tried wines guiding future picks. The quiz described on the page asks about wines the member likes or dislikes, discovery interests, budget, and shipment frequency. Wine.com: Picked.

That human-curated approach contrasts with Firstleaf’s algorithm-assisted description, but it does not mean human and automated methods are mutually exclusive across the industry. Public service pages explain what each company says about its own process; they do not establish a universal model or allow a fair comparison of recommendation accuracy.
What Picked lets members set
Wine.com’s Picked page describes member control over price and shipment frequency, a red/white mix, cancellation, standard shipping for picks, and a credit for a bottle that misses the mark, subject to the service’s stated conditions. Its page uses more than one price phrasing, and offers or terms can change, so check the current page for details rather than relying on an older quoted price.

How a personal match differs from a crowd rating
Vivino is a wine app and marketplace, rather than the wine-club example above. Its June 2026 explanation of Match for You says its score draws on a user’s rating history and wine attributes; users can also manually flag grapes, styles, and regions they like or dislike. Vivino describes broader recommendations as using scanning, rating, and purchase behavior alongside community ratings. Vivino: Match for You.
These signals answer different questions. A personal match estimates how likely a wine is to suit one user. A community rating reflects other users’ opinions and is not the same thing as a prediction about an individual palate. Vivino puts the distinction plainly: “The score isn’t about whether the wine is objectively good. It’s about whether it’s good for you.” Match features and availability can vary by region and app version.

What personalization claims do—and do not—tell you
A service’s description is useful for understanding its stated inputs and process, but it is not independent proof that its recommendations are accurate. Firstleaf uses the phrases “patent-pending technology” and “13 billion data points,” but its public pages do not explain the model, the weighting of its inputs, error rates, or a controlled evaluation. Its WinePrint article explains profile outputs and rating thresholds, not the underlying recommendation model.

More ratings may give a service more information, but they do not guarantee better matches. Ratings can reflect only the wines a member happened to receive or try, the styles they have encountered, their price range, or a palate that is changing. Vivino advises rating across styles and setting preferences manually; that is the company’s guidance, not independent evidence of recommendation performance. No head-to-head accuracy comparison is established for the examples described here.

Questions to ask before choosing a personalized club
- What does it ask at signup? Look for whether the quiz covers preferences, willingness to explore, budget, and delivery choices.
- What feedback can you give later? Check whether you can rate individual wines, leave comments, or signal likes and dislikes—and whether the service says those inputs affect future picks.
- Is a person involved? See whether a sommelier or other human selects or reviews wines, or whether the service describes algorithm-assisted matching.
- Can you understand the profile? A visible profile can make it easier to see which characteristics a service associates with your ratings.
- What does a score mean? Distinguish a personal-fit estimate from community popularity or an aggregate quality rating.
- What choices remain under your control? Check the current terms for budget, shipment timing and frequency, wine mix, cancellation, and remedies for a bottle that disappoints.
You do not need a separate tasting journal to participate: the club or app may collect feedback digitally. If you want to remember why you liked a bottle, jotting down a few impressions can still help you give more specific feedback.
