A Windows file system is the software structure and rules that let applications save and retrieve data on a storage device. It organizes data as files inside directories, arranges those directories on a volume, and defines how names and paths locate stored information. It is not the disk, SSD, partition, or drive letter itself.
What is a file system in Windows?
Microsoft describes a file system as the mechanism that enables applications to store and retrieve files on storage devices. It provides an organizational layer between software and stored data: applications work with named files and paths rather than needing to manage the physical layout of every piece of data themselves. How files, folders, volumes, and drives fit together
The basic Windows hierarchy is volume → directories → files. A file is a logical grouping of related data. A directory—commonly called a folder in Windows interfaces—holds files and may also hold other directories. Directories can therefore form a hierarchy.

A file system organizes data on a volume; it is not the physical storage device. A single disk can be divided into multiple volumes, and Windows can make a volume accessible either through a drive letter or through a mounted folder. That means a drive letter is one access path, not the definition of the storage or its file system. Microsoft Learn: Local File Systems

What do NTFS and exFAT mean?
NTFS is the default file system for modern Windows. Its feature set includes access controls, encryption, disk quotas, compression, and rich metadata. exFAT is in the FAT family and was designed for simplicity while supporting large files and storage devices. Which format is appropriate depends on the device and the features and compatibility required; they are not interchangeable in every situation. How Windows file systems differ
Windows supports multiple file-system formats, and their capabilities vary. Microsoft’s comparison covers NTFS, exFAT, UDF, and FAT32. The table summarizes the differences most relevant to everyday understanding; it is not a complete feature inventory. Microsoft last updated its comparison on March 26, 2023. | File system | Role or design | Notable capabilities in Microsoft’s documentation |
|---|---|---|
| NTFS | Default for modern Windows | Supports access-control lists, filesystem-level encryption, metadata journaling, a file change log, quotas, compression, and rich metadata. |
| exFAT | FAT-family format designed for simplicity and support for large files and storage devices | The comparison does not list access-control lists, filesystem-level encryption, metadata journaling, or a file change log. |
| FAT32 | One of the formats included in Microsoft’s Windows comparison | The comparison does not list access-control lists, filesystem-level encryption, metadata journaling, or a file change log. |
| UDF | One of the formats included in Microsoft’s Windows comparison | The comparison does not list access-control lists, filesystem-level encryption, metadata journaling, or a file change log. |
| ReFS | Designed for resilience, scale, and data integrity in supported Windows Server deployments | Microsoft describes features intended to help preserve data integrity and resilience against corruption. |
“Not listed” means the cited comparison does not show that capability for the format; it should not be read as a complete statement about every implementation. NTFS journaling is specifically described as metadata-only journaling, and a change log is not a promise that user data can never be lost. ReFS has a separate role from the four formats in the comparison and is documented for supported Windows Server editions. Microsoft Learn: ReFS overview

How names and paths locate files
A path identifies where a file or directory sits within a volume’s hierarchy; it can include directory names and a volume name. Windows commonly presents local paths with a drive letter, but mounted folders offer another way to reach a volume. Naming and path-component rules can differ among file systems, so a name accepted in one context may not behave identically in another. Microsoft Learn: Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces

Why file-system limits need context
Maximum file and volume sizes are format- and version-dependent. Microsoft’s comparison gives different limits for NTFS, exFAT, UDF, and FAT32, while its NTFS overview further qualifies supported volume size by Windows version and cluster size. A single maximum stated without those conditions can be misleading. Check the Microsoft documentation for the specific format, Windows release, and configuration before relying on a limit.
