Choosing one is not simply a matter of grabbing the largest image: inspect the homepage’s declared icon candidates, then rank them for the specific surface that needs an icon.
Start with the surface, not the image
“Site icon” can refer to several different things. A browser’s page icon (often called a favicon) is not automatically the same asset a phone uses for a saved web clip, a progressive web app (PWA) uses when installed, or Google shows beside an organic Search result. Each surface recognizes its own declarations and constraints.

MDN documents the HTML icon declarations and platform distinctions in its reference for the rel attribute. A web app manifest is a JSON file linked from the document head; its icons serve the app-installation context rather than simply replacing the browser’s tab icon.
How to rank candidates for a browser page icon
Inspect the homepage’s <head> for every <link rel="icon">. Each link’s href points to an image resource. When more than one candidate is declared, MDN identifies the media, type and sizes attributes as relevant selection inputs: they describe when an image applies, its declared format and its available dimensions.

- Filter for the intended context. A candidate with a
mediacondition is only suitable when that condition applies. - Check whether the client can use its format. The
typedeclaration can help a browser identify an image format. A declaration alone does not make an unsupported format usable. - Compare dimensions and declared sizes. A candidate should fit the surface’s needs; the largest file is not automatically the best choice if another candidate is a better fit.
- Resolve ties and unsuitable candidates cautiously. MDN says that when candidates are equally appropriate, the last one is used; if a candidate is later found unsuitable, the browser proceeds to another. This is documented behavior, not a universal scoring formula shared by every browser.
For example, a site might declare a compact PNG for ordinary page icons, a larger image for a different supported context, and an Apple touch icon separately. The browser-page decision should be made among the applicable rel="icon" candidates; the touch icon is not merely another item in the same interchangeable pool.
Keep platform-specific icons in their own pools
iOS web clips
MDN notes that iOS does not use rel="icon" and its sizes attribute in the same way for web clips or startup placeholders. Apple-specific apple-touch-icon and apple-touch-startup-image conventions address those cases. If ranking for an iOS web clip, inspect the relevant declaration rather than assuming the browser tab choice will be reused.

Installed progressive web apps
A manifest is linked from the page and provides information about the web application, including icons. Those icons belong to the installation and app context. A manifest icon does not, by itself, replace the page icon declared with rel="icon".

The community Website Icon Standard proposes a /.well-known/icons/ discovery convention, including SVG and ICO defaults, and documents /favicon.ico as a current backward-compatibility path. It is a proposal, not evidence that every browser or client implements that discovery method. Do not treat it as a substitute for declarations required by the target surface.

Google Search uses its own favicon eligibility rules
Google Search does not provide a general-purpose ranking of every image a site has published. Google Search Central says it extracts a favicon from the homepage, using supported rel values—icon, the historical shortcut icon, and Apple touch variants—and the link’s href. It supports one favicon per hostname, so a subdirectory does not receive a separate Search favicon.
Google’s favicon guidance says the homepage and icon must be crawlable by Googlebot and Googlebot-Image. The icon must be square and at least 8×8 pixels; Google recommends an image larger than 48×48 pixels. The page lists BMP, GIF, ICO, PNG, JPEG, PPM and TIFF as supported formats. Keep the icon URL stable so Google can continue to find the resource.
Google says recrawling and processing can take several days to several weeks. A site can request homepage indexing through URL Inspection, but that does not guarantee a favicon will appear. As Google Search Central puts it: “A favicon isn’t guaranteed to appear in Google Search results, even if all guidelines are met.”
A practical candidate checklist
For each candidate, record the details that matter to the surface you are serving. A candidate that is suitable for one context may be irrelevant or ineligible for another.

- Surface: browser page, iOS web clip, installed PWA, or Google Search.
- Declaration: the exact
relvalue or manifest entry. - Resource: the
hrefor manifest image path, and whether the URL is accessible. - Format and dimensions: declared MIME type, actual image format, pixel dimensions and any
sizesvalue. - Applicability: whether a
mediacondition matches the viewing context and whether the platform recognizes the declaration. - Search-specific checks: square shape, minimum dimensions, crawl access for both Google crawlers, stable URL and correct hostname scope.
This approach avoids two common mistakes: selecting an image solely because it is the largest, and assuming that one icon declaration controls every browser, app and Search surface.
