Generated feedback is not “just wording”: every adjective, ranking and quantifier makes a claim about a person’s results. In a first-person account published on DEV Community on October 1, 2026, Daniel Pertu describes auditing CogniPrep’s practice-test reports and finding errors in grammar, unsupported judgments and the way text appeared on screen. The audit’s core lesson is simple: each sentence must be defensible from the data, and the rendered report must be checked as well as its underlying text.
What the audit examined
CogniPrep’s reports turn results from a practice-test sitting into written feedback. Pertu describes generating reports across tests with synthetic weak, middling and strong results, then checking what the reports said. The examples are findings from that product audit, not a controlled study of feedback systems generally.

The central test was whether a sentence remained justified by the numbers behind it. As Pertu puts it, “A template that can print a claim is a claim you have to be able to defend from the data alone.” A sentence can be grammatically polished and still be false or overstated.
Three kinds of problems surfaced
Awkward number phrasing
Some output rendered zero results as “0 of 6 right” or “You answered 0 of 16 correctly.” The audit also caught “more than 1 seconds,” where the singular count calls for “second.” Pertu describes adding small helpers for pluralization, article choice before numerals and spelling out some numbers when they begin a sentence.

These are language defects, but fixing them is only a first step: grammatical correctness does not establish that the feedback accurately interprets a result.
Words that promised more than the data
The report used terms such as “mostly,” “majority,” “clearly” and “reliably” without evidence strong enough to support them. For example, the largest category was described as “mostly” even though being the largest does not itself establish a majority. A result only slightly above a focus threshold was described as reliable. A generic positive sentence also appeared when the count of a desirable answer was low.

Each of these words implies a specific degree of support. “Largest” is a comparison; “majority” means more than half. “Reliably” signals a stronger conclusion than a result barely clearing a threshold. The wording must follow the actual test, not the other way around.

A heading appeared as “1 st percentile” because the ordinal components were styled separately and a gap showed between them. Pertu reports that reducing the CSS gap corrected the display. This illustrates why inspecting a generated string alone is insufficient: layout can alter what readers see.

A misleading comparison between sections
One summary called the section with the lowest raw score the weakest area, although the sections did not share the same difficulty. The stated repair was to compare a result with the expected line for that section instead of ranking raw scores alone. If baselines differ, a lower raw score does not necessarily mean weaker performance relative to expectations.
How to make generated feedback defensible
Define the evidence needed for each claim
Make adjectives, rankings and quantifiers conditional on explicit checks. A system should distinguish, for example, “largest category” from “majority,” and should not call a result reliable merely because it crosses a focus threshold. Grammar helpers can improve the sentence, but they cannot validate its meaning.

Allow the system to say nothing
A metric can be available without supporting a useful judgment. Pertu recommends building what he calls “the vocabulary of silence first”: permit a no-claim state when praise or criticism would be meaningless. This avoids forcing every measured value into a positive-or-negative label.

Represent intermediate evidence
Binary good/bad feedback can overstate what middling evidence supports. Where the data warrants it, use an intermediate state—or no evaluative claim—rather than stretching a threshold into praise or criticism.

Check consistency across the whole report
Different sentences may discuss the same metric. Assertions should cover generated report text and cross-check related claims, so that an unsupported conclusion does not disappear from one sentence only to reappear in another. Pertu’s account recommends keeping thresholds and optional strength or weakness language together in a shared per-metric configuration, then checking the evidence again before praise is emitted.
Test both text and presentation
Generate representative reports from weak, middling and strong inputs. Assert on the text, then read the rendered page at realistic screen widths. As Pertu’s phrasing has it: “Assert on the text. Then read the rendered page.”

The article is a first-person account of one product’s audit, not a comparison of audit frameworks or proof that every feedback product has the same defects. Its practical contribution is a way to think about generated prose: treat every statement as a data-backed claim, compare performance against an appropriate baseline, and preserve a valid option not to judge.
CogniPrep describes itself as a practice platform for psychometric tests with tests and feedback features on its official homepage. Its pricing page describes paid provider access and a one-time scores-and-reports upgrade, while its numerical-reasoning practice page provides context for scoring and percentile feedback. Those are product details, not evidence that the reported audit findings generalize beyond the examples in Pertu’s account.
