Walrus Memory can let a chatbot use relevant information from earlier sessions by storing memories outside the model and retrieving them into a later prompt. That is a documented capability, not proof of a measured improvement in any particular chatbot: no reproducible before-and-after test or performance result is established here.
What changes when a chatbot has external memory
A model’s context window holds the information available to it for a particular request. Once that request ends, the application must provide any past details the model should use again. Walrus Memory adds an external store and retrieval step: the application can save selected information, search for relevant entries later, and include the returned text in a new prompt. The model is not spontaneously remembering an earlier conversation; the application is supplying context retrieved from storage. Walrus Memory’s overview describes this retrieval-augmented approach.

In practical terms, that can support continuity without resending an entire conversation history when only a preference, decision, or other specific fact is relevant. Whether the result is more useful depends on what the application saves, what the search retrieves, and how the prompt uses it. The official documentation does not report a measured change in answer quality, recall accuracy, latency, token use, or error rate.
How Walrus Memory stores and retrieves information
The documented standard flow separates durable storage from search. When a memory is written, its plaintext is embedded, encrypted with Seal, and uploaded as a Walrus blob. The system records the vector, blob ID, owner address, and namespace in PostgreSQL with pgvector. The architecture documentation identifies 1,536 dimensions for vectors generated with text-embedding-3-small; this is an implementation parameter, not a measure of memory quality. The architecture guide describes the flow.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
- Capture: The application submits a memory, or uses the documented
analyzeoperation to extract separate facts from a longer passage. - Store: The standard flow creates an embedding, encrypts the content, uploads the encrypted payload to Walrus, and records search metadata in PostgreSQL/pgvector.
- Recall: For a later request, the query is embedded and matched against the vector index. Matching Walrus blobs are fetched and decrypted, and the resulting plaintext memories are returned to the application.
- Use: The application decides whether and how to insert those results into the model’s prompt. A memory that is stored but not retrieved or included is not available to that request.
Walrus blobs are the durable source of truth; the vector index is a search aid that can be reconstructed. The documented restore operation rebuilds missing index entries from stored blobs. The core-components guide says the contract manages identity and permissions rather than storing memory content. That statement is about the contract: it does not mean the standard relayer never handles plaintext.
What a credible before-and-after demonstration needs
A useful demonstration should isolate memory from other changes in the chatbot. Use the same model and runtime before and after, and show a question whose answer depends on one deliberately saved fact.

- Start a fresh session and ask a question that requires a preference or decision the chatbot has not been told. Record the answer.
- Save a specific memory, such as “For trip suggestions, I prefer trains over flights.” Note the exact memory text and the namespace used.
- Start another fresh session and ask a related question without repeating the preference.
- Show which memory was retrieved, then show the prompt context or explain how the application added it before generating the answer.
- Report the model, runtime, MemWal SDK version, network, memory text, namespace, and retrieval settings so readers can distinguish an observed result from an architectural expectation.
Without that reproducible exchange, the accurate claim is that Walrus Memory provides a way to persist and retrieve selected information—not that it demonstrably changed a particular chatbot’s answers.
Choose an integration based on trust and workload
Walrus Memory documents six integration paths. They differ in who handles embeddings and encryption, how much the relayer can access, and how much infrastructure the application team must operate. The integration guide describes these paths.

| Path | How it handles the work | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Default TypeScript SDK | @mysten-incubation/memwal delegates embedding, retrieval, and restore to the relayer. The repository example uses remember, waits for its job, then calls recall; it can also call restore. |
Less client-side integration work, but the standard relayer handles plaintext as part of embedding and encryption. |
| Managed relayer | Uses a relayer endpoint operated as a public-good service by the Walrus Foundation. The guide lists Mainnet and Testnet staging endpoints. | Convenient, but endpoint availability and service conditions can change; verify them before relying on the service. |
| Manual client | The client creates embeddings and performs Seal encryption locally; the relayer receives encrypted payloads and vectors. | Reduces the relayer’s access to plaintext, while requiring more client-side implementation and control of the relevant operations. |
| AI middleware | The @mysten-incubation/memwal/ai integration adds recall and auto-save behavior for applications already using the AI SDK. |
Wraps more of an existing AI application flow; confirm how its automatic recall and saving fit the app’s privacy and memory-selection needs. |
| Self-hosted relayer | The deploying team operates the relayer and controls its infrastructure and credentials. | Offers more operational control, but shifts deployment and maintenance work to the team. |
| MCP | Provides an MCP server path for compatible agent clients. | Useful when the agent client supports MCP; it does not remove the need to configure memory scope and lifecycle. |
The standard relayer’s plaintext handling matters when assessing privacy. Walrus Memory’s core-components guide describes manual client processing and self-hosting as alternatives for teams seeking more control over that boundary; do not treat the default managed flow as end-to-end private from the relayer operator.

Memory operations are scoped by owner and namespace. Choose namespaces deliberately: moving memories to a different namespace later requires rewriting them. The management guide documents dashboard and SDK operations, including renewal and deletion.

- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Storage is paid for a number of epochs, not guaranteed indefinitely. The guide describes an epoch as about two weeks on Mainnet and about one day on Testnet. Track the expiration epoch and renew before it; according to the guide, a blob that has lapsed cannot be recovered or renewed. Deletion is permanent, so confirm the deletion behavior and path in the version you deploy.

The documentation also says there is no public unauthenticated Mainnet publisher; documented production upload choices are a private authenticated publisher, an upload relay, or direct TypeScript SDK integration. The production guide covers these upload options.

Is Walrus Memory the right fit?
It is a fit when an application needs to save selected facts externally and retrieve relevant ones across requests, and its team is prepared to choose a trust model, manage namespace and storage lifecycle, and decide what belongs in a prompt. It is not a guarantee that a chatbot will remember everything, retrieve the right item every time, or improve by a measurable amount. The MemWal repository labels the project beta, so verify package versions and current behavior before building around it. The MemWal repository is the source for package examples and project status.
