To claim an Indian GST refund, file the relevant refund application on the GST Portal; the form and supporting evidence depend on the refund category. After filing, track the application at Services > Refunds > Track Application Status using the filing year or ARN. For bank validation and payment progress, check PFMS separately: a GST application status or sanction does not by itself confirm that funds have reached your bank.
What to know before filing a GST refund claim
India’s GST refund process involves category-specific rules and forms. The applicable eligibility criteria, limitation period, fields and supporting documents depend on the reason for the refund, so there is no single document checklist that applies to every claim. Select the relevant refund category on the official GST Portal and follow the requirements shown for that claim. This guide explains the online process at a high level and how to track a filed application; it does not establish category-specific filing requirements.

How to submit and keep a record of your application
- Open the official GST Portal and sign in using your own account. Do not share your password, OTP or account details with an intermediary.
- Go to Services > Refunds and choose the refund application option applicable to your claim. Complete the category-specific form and attach the evidence required for that category.
- Review and submit the application in the portal. Keep the resulting ARN (Application Reference Number) and receipt. The ARN is useful for tracking the filed application.
To reopen an application, GSTN guidance gives the route Services > Refunds > My Saved/Filed Applications. Saved or submitted applications can be opened there; the ARN link can be used to download the receipt.

- Navigate to Services > Refunds > Track Application Status.
- Select the filing year or enter the ARN, then search. The portal displays tracking information for the application.
- Use the result to identify the application-processing stage and whether action is pending with the tax officer or taxpayer. It is not proof that the refund has been credited to your bank.
GSTN’s 2022 functionality update describes possible RFD-06 outcomes as refund sanctioned, partially sanctioned or rejected, and says tracking details include the transmission date and time. These are source-dated examples; current status wording may differ, so rely on the labels shown in the live portal.

Check bank validation and payment status in PFMS
The GST Portal and the Public Financial Management System (PFMS) cover different parts of the process. Use the GST Portal for application processing and PFMS to investigate bank validation and disbursal. The GSTN/CGA advisory describes account validation after filing RFD-01 and again after an officer issues the RFD-05 payment order. A payment order and final bank disbursal are separate milestones.
| Question | GST Portal | PFMS |
|---|---|---|
| What does it track? | Refund application stage, including matters pending with the officer or taxpayer | Bank-account validation and payment/disbursal progress |
| Useful identifier | Filing year or ARN | GSTIN or account number, depending on the lookup option |
| When to use it | To check application-processing progress | To investigate validation or payment processing |
After filing RFD-01
For the validation following RFD-01, the advisory directs taxpayers to choose GST Registered in the PFMS lookup, enter the GSTIN or account number, and view the report.

After the officer issues RFD-05
For validation after RFD-05, choose GST Successfully Processed. If the record is not there, check GST Under Process for validation errors.
After successful validation, PFMS processing can still involve DDO/PAO approval, online scroll generation and submission to banks for final disbursal. Therefore, a sanctioned refund or payment order is not the same as a completed bank credit.

What to do if validation fails or payment is delayed
- Check the right system for the current stage. Use the GST Portal for officer or taxpayer processing; use PFMS for account validation and disbursal status.
- If bank details are incorrect, the advisory says the taxpayer must update the bank account in the refund application and the officer must re-issue RFD-05.
- If the issue is a technical file-exchange error, the advisory distinguishes it from incorrect account details: the GST System may correct the error and send the record to PFMS for revalidation.
- If the portal shows an action pending with you, review the application and any notice or request in your GST account, then respond through the official portal as applicable.
No general processing time is established here. The time to resolution can depend on the claim category, officer processing, successful validations and subsequent payment steps.

A historical GSTN functionality notice describes a pre-login route: select Refund and enter the ARN to view stages and current status. Because this is older guidance, check whether the live portal still offers that route. The signed-in tracking route remains the portal path described above.
