Its documented stack uses Flask, PostgreSQL, Redis with RQ, and Docker Compose. The project describes content creation, scheduling, remote client monitoring, backups, and updates; those are documented capabilities, not independently tested performance guarantees.
What Visio-Display does
Visio-Display is presented by maintainer Eric Tomas (Woofix) as free and open-source software for operating digital signage. A central web application organizes media, playlists, and schedules, while clients render the resulting display on screens. The project describes its intended users as homelabs, associations, schools, businesses, and small internal infrastructures; that is a stated audience, not evidence of adoption rates.

The maintainer describes the goal as broader than displaying media: “The objective is not only to display media. It is to provide an operational platform that shows which screens are available, allows remote intervention, and helps restore service without manually connecting to every client.” — Eric Tomas (Woofix), project maintainer. See the Visio-Display project overview for the project’s own description.
How the platform is put together
The documented server uses Python with Flask and Gunicorn for the web application, PostgreSQL for persistent application and account data, and Redis with RQ for caching and background jobs. Docker Compose is the deployment method described by the project. This means an operator is maintaining a server stack, not simply installing a standalone player on each television.

The repository quick start names Docker and Docker Compose as requirements. It documents a manual Compose setup, and the maintainer also describes a guided Linux installer that checks prerequisites, prepares environment settings, creates an administrator account, builds containers, and starts the services. Because installer steps and security practices can change, use the current repository instructions rather than relying on an old walkthrough: project repository and setup instructions.
How screens, media, and schedules work
Each screen can be named and managed separately, with its own media list, ordering, activation state, display durations, and schedule. That model is useful when several displays need different programming—for example, a reception screen and a dining-area menu—without treating them as one identical output.

Media and playlists
The repository describes a library for images, videos, and PDFs, along with ordered playlists whose items have defined durations. Video processing is described as asynchronous, including automatic H.264 re-encoding; PDFs are converted into images for display. These are project-described workflows, not a guarantee that every file or playback device will behave identically.
Time-based content and alerts
Scheduling supports dates and times, and media groups can be used for temporary priority campaigns that yield back to the regular schedule afterward. The project also describes priority alerts and an announcement editor with a 16:9 canvas exported as a 1920×1080 PNG. Menu creation is another documented workflow. Confirm current supported formats and behavior in the repository before building a production workflow around a particular asset type: Visio-Display repository.

What the kiosk clients do
The display side is based on Linux kiosk clients. The project documents remote setup over SSH, including autologin, a protected display URL, screen naming, and heartbeat reporting. Raspberry Pi kiosk mode is shown as an example, including launching Chromium fullscreen against the public display URL. Raspberry Pi is therefore a documented option, but the project materials do not establish a required model, memory level, or tested hardware bundle.
The maintainer says clients can report availability and system information and provide screenshots, with remote actions such as restart, shutdown, reinstall, and update. The described heartbeat implementation sends an initial signal approximately 15 seconds after startup, then another every 30 seconds; the server marks a client offline after five minutes without one. These are implementation details stated by the maintainer, not independently verified service-level guarantees.

- Secure by design: Secure boot and encrypted storage keep your signage protected and running smoothly.
- Manage on the go: Create profiles, organize by location, and monitor real-time right from your phone.
Operations, access, and security
Beyond content delivery, the maintainer lists user roles and permissions, activity logs, separate operation tokens, manual and scheduled backups, web-interface restore, optional SMB backup copies, a controlled server update mechanism, and an API for client communication and administrative actions. The repository also describes access controls, backup handling, server updates, and security-hardening guidance.
Backups deserve careful treatment: the repository notes that archives may include sensitive material such as environment configuration. Store them as secrets, restrict access, and consider who can access any optional network share. Documentation of security controls and hardening guidance should not be mistaken for an independent security audit or a claim that a default deployment is secure without operator configuration.

Is Visio-Display a fit for your signage setup?
The practical decision is less about whether a signage platform has a particular feature and more about whether your team wants to operate the infrastructure behind it. Visio-Display’s documented capabilities align with environments that need centralized control of multiple screens and are prepared to manage a Linux/Docker server and kiosk clients.
Recommended Free Tools
- Self-hosting and data control: the project is designed around an operator-managed server rather than a hosted service.
- Server skills: plan for Docker Compose and Linux administration, plus PostgreSQL, Redis/RQ, backup, update, and access-management responsibilities.
- Screen independence: named screens can have separate media, ordering, activation, durations, and schedules.
- Campaign complexity: playlists, date/time schedules, media groups, priority campaigns, and alerts are documented; verify that the current implementation matches your exact workflow.
- Player compatibility: Linux kiosk operation is documented, with Raspberry Pi as an example. No specific hardware model or performance profile is established in the cited materials.
- Remote operations and recovery: client status, screenshots, remote actions, backups, and restore are part of the described operations story; test the procedures you will rely on before deployment.
- Evidence quality: available project materials describe features and implementation. They do not provide independent benchmarks, reliability statistics, or a head-to-head ranking against other signage platforms.
A practical deployment checklist
- Choose where the server will run. Prepare a Linux environment suitable for the Docker and Docker Compose deployment described in the current repository.
- Follow current setup instructions. Use the repository’s guided installer or manual Compose procedure as currently documented; configure administrator access and environment settings carefully.
- Plan screen identities and content. Decide which displays need independent playlists, durations, schedules, or temporary campaigns, then prepare media for the documented image, video, or PDF workflows.
- Prepare each kiosk client. Arrange a Linux-capable player and display connection. A Raspberry Pi is one documented route, but the project does not specify a required model. The display, HDMI cable, microSD card, power supply, and network connection are general signage needs, not project-specific model recommendations.
- Set up and name clients. Use the documented SSH deployment process, protected display URL, autologin, and screen naming, then confirm that the display renders as intended.
- Configure operations before relying on it. Review roles, tokens, update procedures, and the security-hardening guide; establish backup and restore practices and protect archives as sensitive data.
- Validate the real workflow. Check playback for your actual files and devices, confirm scheduling and priority behavior, and exercise monitoring and recovery steps in your environment.
