A honey bee colony can be understood as an integrated biological unit: workers coordinate foraging, brood care, defense and resource use in ways that affect the group as a whole. A 2026 review by H. A. Bonhoff and H. Helanterä advances a more specific interpretation: each queen-defined colony is a mortal superorganism, and a nest used across queen generations is a matrilineage of successive superorganisms. That reframes requeening and swarming—but it is an argument about how to understand colony identity, not a trial proving beekeepers should stop requeening.
What does it mean to call a honey bee colony a superorganism?
“Superorganism” describes a group whose members coordinate functions in a way that produces integrated, group-level organization. For honey bees, workers divide and coordinate tasks such as foraging, brood care and defense; communication and feedback can help the colony adjust its collective activity. The concept does not mean individual bees are irrelevant. It means some important processes are best understood by looking at the colony as well as at its members. Seeley’s 1997 paper describes honey bee colonies as group-level adaptive units: PubMed record.

The term is an explanatory framework, not a management prescription. The more consequential question for beekeepers is how to define the colony over time—especially when its queen changes.

Bonhoff and Helanterä’s 2026 review, “On the life history of the honey bee superorganism,” contrasts two ways to answer that question. In one view, the colony occupying a nest continues through successive queens and may be described as potentially immortal. In the authors’ alternative, a queen defines the identity of a mortal superorganism. A nest used by successive queens is therefore a matrilineage: a lineage of distinct superorganisms rather than one unchanged colony. The authors argue that this account fits parent-offspring relationships and sexual reproduction better. Their interpretation revisits a contested conceptual question; it is not an established consensus that every beekeeper must adopt. Read the review: Bonhoff and Helanterä, 2026.

What does this perspective change about requeening?
In the review’s framework, replacing a queen with one that is not the old queen’s daughter creates a superorganism with a different genotype. The authors characterize common requeening as ending the existing superorganism and introducing another queen. That language makes the biological continuity question explicit: is the management goal to preserve the same queen-defined group, or to maintain productive occupation of a nest site across generations?
This is a conceptual and normative implication, not evidence from a controlled comparison showing that requeening is harmful overall. Nor does it establish that requeening should be abandoned. Beekeepers may manage for honey production, pollination, health or winter survival, and practical decisions depend on colony condition and local evidence. The superorganism lens adds a question to those decisions—what counts as continuity, and what is being traded off?—rather than supplying a universal answer.

Is swarming the colony’s reproduction?
Bonhoff and Helanterä argue that swarming itself is not reproduction in their framework: the swarm departs before fertilization. They distinguish the old queen’s departure, which can allow the maternal superorganism to persist, from the later production of a new queen-defined colony. This is the authors’ interpretation of colony life history, not a claim that swarming has no reproductive role in the broader process.
Why assess health at colony level?
Some defenses work through coordinated behavior rather than a single bee’s physiology. USDA Agricultural Research Service describes social-immunity mechanisms including hygienic behavior, nestmate grooming, collecting antimicrobial materials and using propolis. Some defenses are present routinely; others can be induced by parasites or pathogens. The review notes that breeding for natural defenses may support health and productivity, but these traits do not replace monitoring, diagnosis or locally appropriate disease control. Looking at colony-level health broadens the evidence a beekeeper considers: not only individual-bee signs, but also collective behavior and outcomes. It does not make individual observations unnecessary; it places them in the context of the colony’s defenses and condition.
How can the superorganism lens improve management decisions?
A European review of beekeeping management organizes practices into six broad categories and considers their potential colony impacts, the reasons they are used and conditions affecting timing and effectiveness. It is a framework for asking better questions, not a universal protocol.

| Management category | Colony-centered question |
|---|---|
| Chemical control | What health problem is being addressed, and what effects might the practice have on the colony and its wider disease dynamics? |
| Replacing brood comb | How does changing comb affect the colony’s resources and condition? |
| Replacing comb containing feed sources | What happens to available stores, and is the timing appropriate for this colony? |
| Supplementary feeding | What need is feeding intended to meet, and how does the colony’s condition shape its use? |
| Changes in worker numbers | How might the change affect the group’s capacity to perform its functions? |
| Beekeeper category or experience | How do experience and management context affect the choice, timing and execution of a practice? |
The categories and context variables come from Sperandio and colleagues’ 2019 review, which focuses on European management: Beekeeping and honey bee colony health. Its framework supports comparing intended outcomes, colony condition and timing; it does not establish one best practice across regions or situations.
Why consider disease ecology and evolution?
Disease management can affect more than the immediate health of a colony. A 2017 review argues that honey bee disease should be considered through ecological and evolutionary relationships among hosts, parasites and their environment, including the possibility that management can shape parasite virulence. This is a reason to include longer-term dynamics in the questions asked about an intervention—not proof that any particular practice reliably produces a specific evolutionary outcome. What this perspective can—and cannot—settle
Thinking in terms of superorganisms can help beekeepers distinguish the identity of a queen-defined colony from the continuity of a nest site or lineage. It also encourages attention to social defenses, group-level outcomes and the context in which management takes place. But the cited sources do not directly compare two complete beekeeping systems—one organized around conventional production goals and another around preserving superorganismal identity. The framework can sharpen management questions; it does not rank whole systems or replace evidence about a particular intervention.
