How Video Game Streaming Works for Players and Viewers

Video game streaming may send your gameplay to an audience or deliver a remotely hosted game to you. The difference is who receives the stream and where the game runs.

Video game streaming can mean either sending your gameplay over the internet for an audience to watch or receiving a game that runs on a remote computer. The key difference is who is watching and where the game runs: a broadcast goes to viewers, cloud game streaming delivers play to you, and Remote Play sends a game running on your own console to another device.

What is video game streaming?

The phrase has two common meanings. In gameplay broadcasting, a player sends live audio and video of a game to a platform, which prepares and distributes the broadcast to viewers. In cloud game streaming, a remote server runs the game and sends its audiovisual output to the player’s device.

Twitch defines live streaming as broadcasting audio and video over the internet in real time. Its broadcast system takes a signal from the streamer, authenticates and prepares it, then distributes it to viewers. Twitch’s streaming FAQ describes this viewer-facing use; AWS’s Games Industry Lens describes cloud game streaming as gameplay rendered remotely and streamed to a thin client, often a browser.

How does a gameplay broadcast work?

The player runs a game locally on a PC, console, or mobile device. A software encoder, a console’s built-in streaming feature, or a hardware encoder packages the game’s picture and sound and sends them over the internet to the platform’s ingest system. The platform then prepares the incoming stream for viewers. Twitch documents RTMP as a protocol for sending a broadcast signal to its service. Twitch’s broadcasting guidelines explain the signal path and available encoder routes.

The exact setup depends on the device and platform. YouTube documents mobile, webcam, encoder, and console options, including direct streaming from modern PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo consoles. A separate capture card or powerful streaming PC is therefore not a universal requirement. A microphone and camera are optional for Twitch broadcasting, too; they are choices for adding commentary or a face camera, not part of the definition of streaming. YouTube’s live-streaming help outlines its device routes, while Twitch’s guidance on streaming without a capture card covers another common setup question.

Why upload stability matters

A live broadcast has to send data continuously from the player to the platform. Twitch advises allowing sufficient upload capacity for the selected bitrate and favoring stable settings over settings that cause dropped frames. Bitrate and other technical settings are platform-specific, so check the current recommendations for the service and streaming route you use rather than treating one setting as universal. Twitch’s encoding guidance provides its current technical recommendations.

How cloud game streaming differs from Remote Play

Both cloud game streaming and Remote Play send a game’s output to another device, but the game runs in a different place. With cloud play, the service provider runs the game on a remote server. With Remote Play, the player’s own console runs the game and streams its output to a second device.

Use Who receives the stream? Where the game runs
Gameplay broadcast An audience of viewers The player’s local PC, console, or mobile device
Cloud game streaming The player A provider’s remote server
Remote Play The player on another device The player’s own console

Microsoft illustrates the distinction with Xbox: Xbox Game Streaming runs a game on an Xbox server in an Azure datacenter, whereas Xbox Remote Play runs it on the user’s Xbox console and streams the experience to a Windows PC or mobile device. Microsoft’s Xbox Remote Play page describes the console-to-device option, and its game-streaming overview explains the server-hosted model.

What do you need to start streaming?

For a gameplay broadcast, you need a game-running device, a way to encode and send its audio and video, an internet connection, and a streaming platform. Those functions may be handled by one console or mobile device, or split across a PC, encoder software, and other equipment. The right path depends on the platform and device; a camera, microphone, and capture hardware are setup-specific additions, not mandatory gear.

For cloud game streaming, the game runs on the provider’s server and the player receives the stream on a supported device. For Remote Play, the player needs their own console to run the game and another compatible device to receive its output. Network and platform requirements vary by service, so check the relevant service’s current device and connection guidance.

How to tell which meaning someone intends

  • If someone talks about broadcasting, viewers, an encoder, or an ingest server, they mean gameplay broadcasting.
  • If they mean playing without the game running locally on the receiving device, they likely mean cloud game streaming.
  • If the game runs on the player’s own console but appears on a phone or PC, that is Remote Play.
