How Many Parachutes Should You Put on a KSP Craft?

KSP has no universal parachute count: craft mass, shape, descent speed, atmosphere, and deployment settings all affect the setup. Learn how to test yours.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no fixed parachute count that works for every Kerbal Space Program craft. You need enough drag to bring the vehicle to a safe landing speed, but the right number depends on the craft’s mass and shape, its speed and altitude during descent, the destination’s atmosphere, and the parachutes’ deployment settings. Remove unneeded stages, manage speed before opening the main chutes, and test the full craft on its intended landing profile.

Why KSP does not have a universal parachute count

A parachute is not simply rated to carry a set mass. In stock KSP, the immediate risk to a chute is excessive airspeed when it deploys; meanwhile, a chute can remain intact yet provide too little drag to slow the whole craft enough for a safe landing. As Snark, a Lead Moderator on the Kerbal Space Program Forums, put it: “What kills the parachute isn’t load. It’s airspeed.” That is an explanation of stock game behavior, not a rule for real-world parachutes. Read the forum explanation.

Consequently, adding more chutes is not a substitute for considering the descent. More drag can help reduce landing speed, but the craft must first reach conditions in which the chutes can deploy safely. The atmosphere and the vehicle’s speed and shape affect how quickly it slows.

What determines how many chutes you need?

  • Mass at landing: Count the vehicle as it will descend, including payload and any stages you plan to keep attached.
  • Shape and drag: The craft’s configuration affects how it moves through the atmosphere, so two vehicles of the same mass may not descend alike.
  • Entry and descent speed: A fast craft may need to slow down before its main chutes can safely deploy.
  • Atmosphere: Atmospheric conditions differ by destination; a setup that works in one place is not automatically adequate elsewhere.
  • Deployment settings: Staging arms a stock chute, while pressure and speed affect semi-deployment and the configured altitude controls full deployment. The kRPC documentation exposes properties for minimum semi-deployment pressure and full-deployment altitude, confirming that these settings can be inspected or configured through the API. See the kRPC parachute properties.
  • Touchdown target: The required drag depends on how slowly the craft needs to be moving when it reaches the ground.

How to choose and test a parachute setup

  1. Set the landing configuration. Decide which tanks, engines, and other stages will remain attached through descent. If they are not needed, staging them away reduces the mass and changes the craft’s shape; the forum guidance recommends this for the example vehicle discussed there.
  2. Check the deployment conditions. Confirm that the chute is armed by staging and review its semi-deployment pressure, full-deployment altitude, and speed behavior. Do not assume a default is unchanged if you have adjusted the part or use mods.
  3. Use drogues for speed management when appropriate. Drogues can begin slowing a fast craft earlier and are described in the forum discussion as tolerating higher speeds. Their fully deployed drag is too low to count on for a gentle touchdown by themselves, so plan for suitable main chutes as well. The forum discussion explains the distinction.
  4. Test the complete vehicle at its destination. Reproduce the intended landing profile with the same payload and retained stages. Check that the chutes deploy without being destroyed and that the craft slows enough before touchdown.
  5. Adjust based on the failure. If a chute is destroyed, address deployment speed or timing. If the chute survives but the landing is too fast, reduce retained mass, improve the descent setup, or add main-chute drag, then test again.

Standard chutes and drogues have different jobs

Part type Role in descent What to account for
Standard or main chute Provides the drag intended to slow the craft for landing. It still needs safe deployment conditions, and the number needed depends on the whole craft and landing atmosphere.
Drogue chute Begins slowing a fast craft earlier and can tolerate higher speeds, according to the forum explanation. Its fully deployed drag is described as insufficient by itself for a gentle landing; pair it with an adequate landing plan.

How to interpret the commonly cited default settings

A 2021 Kerbal Space Program Forums post reports a default minimum pressure of 0.04 atmospheres and a default full-deployment altitude of 1,000 m for a standard chute, with different defaults for the Mk12-R drogue. Treat these as forum-reported values, not guarantees for every KSP version, mod setup, or player-adjusted craft. The kRPC API documents the corresponding adjustable or inspectable parachute properties, but it does not provide a current player-facing chart that maps craft mass to chute count. kRPC parachute API documentation.

A practical rule for heavy or thin-atmosphere landings

For a heavy payload or a destination with a thin atmosphere, do not rely on a count copied from another craft. Keep the descent configuration as light as practical, use drogues only as an early speed-management aid, and verify that the main chutes can slow the vehicle to the touchdown speed you need. Community information describes atmospheric drag as dependent on air conditions and part shape, reinforcing why a single count cannot cover every destination. See the community atmosphere reference.

No verified universal table establishes a parachute count by craft mass across destinations. A successful test of the actual vehicle, at its intended destination and descent profile, is the reliable way to settle the count.
