Video compression makes moving images smaller by reducing repeated or less noticeable information, both within each frame and between neighboring frames. An encoder creates the compressed video stream; a compatible decoder reconstructs the pictures for playback. The result is a trade-off among file size, visual fidelity, encoding time, and compatibility—not a setting called “MP4 quality.”
What happens when a video is compressed?
A video is a timed sequence of still images, or frames. One uncompressed 4K frame contains roughly 8 million pixels and can occupy about 25 MB, according to MDN Web Docs; that is an explanatory approximation, not a prediction of a compressed file’s size. Compression makes a sequence practical to store, upload, and play by representing its information more compactly.
The process has two broad opportunities for savings: simplify detail inside a frame and avoid storing the same scene information over and over across frames. The encoder applies a codec’s rules to make those choices and packages the resulting data for a decoder to read.
Spatial compression: reduce detail within a frame
Images contain fine detail that viewers may not notice equally. A lossy encoder can simplify or discard some of that high-frequency detail, then encode what remains efficiently. Stronger compression can produce a smaller file, but it also increases the chance of visible artifacts such as blockiness, smearing, or loss of texture.

Temporal compression: reuse information between frames
Neighboring frames often show much of the same scene. Instead of saving every frame as a complete independent picture, a video encoder can use a reference frame to predict another frame and encode the difference, or residual. A key or intra-coded frame provides a fuller reference picture; predicted frames encode changes relative to references. This saves data when scenes are similar, but means seeking and recovering after a transmission error can depend on reference points.
Entropy coding: represent the remaining data compactly
After decisions such as prediction and quantization, lossless entropy coding can represent the remaining symbols more compactly. “Lossless” here describes this final coding stage; it does not make the whole video encode lossless if an earlier stage already discarded image information.
What controls file size and visual quality?
No single number determines the result. The Internet Engineering Task Force’s RFC 9317 identifies resolution, frame rate, color depth, codec, encoding parameters, scene complexity, and motion as factors in bitrate selection. In practical terms, detail and movement make a video harder to compress at a given data rate.

- Bitrate: The data allocated per second. More bitrate generally allows higher visual quality but creates a larger file; bitrate by itself cannot guarantee a particular quality.
- Resolution: More pixels per frame generally require more data.
- Frame rate: More frames per second generally require more data. For uploads, YouTube recommends using the frame rate at which the video was recorded.
- Motion and scene complexity: Fast movement, fine detail, and image noise are harder to predict or encode efficiently.
- Codec and encoder settings: These affect compression efficiency, output, compatibility, and encoding speed. Encoding can require substantially more computation than decoding.
- Lossy or lossless mode: Lossy compression accepts some deviation from the source to make a smaller delivery file. Lossless compression preserves the source on decoding but typically produces a much larger file.
Codec versus container: H.264 is not the same as MP4
A codec defines methods for coding and decoding video. H.264/AVC, HEVC/H.265, VP9, and AV1 are examples. A container packages one or more encoded streams along with metadata; MP4, WebM, and MKV are examples. A container can support multiple codecs, so an “.mp4” extension does not tell you which codec compressed the video. Playback requires a player that understands the container and can decode the video codec inside it.
When choosing a format, consider compatibility with the destination and playback devices as well as file size and encoding time. YouTube’s upload guidance recommends H.264 for its specified workflow. Vimeo describes H.265/HEVC as a way to achieve a smaller file with high visual quality at the cost of longer encoding time. The Alliance for Open Media describes AV1 as an open codec designed for efficient compression and high-resolution adaptive streaming and HDR use. These are not guarantees that a codec will always make a smaller or better-looking file: actual results depend on the encoder, settings, source material, and device support.

| YouTube SDR upload, 1080p at 48, 50, or 60 fps | 12 Mbps recommended by YouTube for its upload workflow. |
| YouTube SDR upload, 4K at standard frame rates | 35–45 Mbps recommended by YouTube. |

| Typical streaming range cited in IETF RFC 9317 (2022), 1080p H.265 | 4.5–7 Mbps. |
| Typical streaming range cited in IETF RFC 9317 (2022), 2160p/4K H.265 | 10–20 Mbps. The RFC table gives no H.264 4K value in that row. |
| Vimeo suggested range, 1080p | 10–20 Mbps; Vimeo recommends variable bitrate when available. |
| Vimeo suggested range, 4K | 30–60 Mbps; Vimeo recommends variable bitrate when available. |
YouTube’s figures above apply to SDR uploads; its guidance separates SDR and HDR recommendations. It also specifies H.264, progressive scan, and 4:2:0 chroma subsampling among settings for its upload workflow. The difference among platform recommendations is why there is no single “correct” 1080p or 4K bitrate: identify the platform, frame rate, codec, and content before choosing a target.
Does compressing a video reduce quality?
It depends on whether the compression is lossy or lossless. Lossy compression can make a file substantially smaller by accepting some difference from the source, and visible artifacts may appear if the encoder discards too much information. Lossless compression preserves the original information when decoded, but typically yields much larger files. Increasing bitrate can help preserve detail, but does not by itself determine the quality; codec, settings, resolution, frame rate, and the scene all matter.

How to choose settings without guessing
- Choose the destination first. Look up its current upload or delivery guidance; platform recommendations differ.
- Keep the source’s frame rate unless there is a clear reason to change it. This avoids an unnecessary conversion and follows YouTube’s recommendation to upload at the recorded frame rate.
- Select a compatible codec and container. Check that the destination and intended playback devices support both. Do not infer the codec from the file extension alone.
- Set a bitrate appropriate to the destination’s workflow. Treat published figures as guidance for that platform or context, not as universal thresholds.
- Review the encoded result. Check scenes with movement, fine texture, gradients, and noise for artifacts, and confirm playback on the devices that matter.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your compressed video is intended to keep a YouTube channel live with pre-recorded content, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos or playlists. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. The service plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.
