Back up the encoder or streaming computer and the modem/router, size the backup for the measured load and the outage duration you want to cover, then test the complete public stream on backup power. A UPS or inverter cannot preserve an ISP connection that has gone down.
Map every device the stream depends on
Start at the source and trace the live signal to YouTube. Depending on the church’s setup, the chain may include cameras and audio equipment, an encoder or streaming computer, a modem, a router, and other devices needed to send the feed. If any required device loses power, the stream may stop even if the rest of the chain remains on.

The National Informatics Centre (NIC) describes its hired-agency webcast setup as requiring venue audio-video equipment and an encoder capable of publishing the stream. That is useful guidance for identifying the signal path, but it does not prescribe a church’s particular equipment.
Make an equipment checklist
- Camera and any equipment needed to capture or mix audio and video.
- Encoder or streaming computer.
- Modem and router, if separate devices.
- Any other powered equipment required to get the signal from the church to the internet.
Check the actual setup at the venue rather than assuming one device handles everything. Note which components must stay on for the public stream to continue.

Back up power for the full local signal chain
A UPS or inverter with battery backup can keep connected equipment powered during a cut, but only if the right devices are connected and the backup can support their combined load for the desired period. Include the encoder or streaming computer and the modem/router in the plan, as well as other essential equipment identified in your signal-chain checklist.
Choose and size backup for your church
- Record the load. Identify the devices that must remain on and their actual power requirements. Do not choose capacity based on a generic livestream setup.
- Set a target runtime. Decide how long the system should keep streaming during an outage. There is no universal UPS size or runtime established for every church; both depend on the equipment and the goal.
- Check compatibility and installation needs. Confirm that the backup arrangement suits the devices and the venue. An inverter and battery may be considered for longer-duration needs, but the right configuration and cost require site-specific assessment and current quotes.
- Test the whole stream. Run the complete setup on the intended backup configuration and verify that the public YouTube stream continues—not merely that a UPS display or individual device stays on.
A small router UPS may be an option for a compatible modem or router, but check its voltage and connector against the device. It does not address the power needs of the encoder or other equipment unless those are separately backed up.
Plan separately for internet outages
Backup power protects equipment at the church; it does not restore an internet connection that has failed. If the ISP connection goes down, a powered router may still have no usable route to YouTube.

Consider a second ISP connection or mobile broadband only after checking what is available at the venue and testing it there. Compare indoor signal strength, data limits, failover behavior, and whether the second connection’s route and local infrastructure are independent enough to help during the same outage. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) describes internet access as being delivered through technologies including fibre optics, DSL, and wireless broadband, but that does not establish which provider or resilient path is available at a particular church.
TRAI recommendations discuss power backup for telecom small cells, including a centralized battery-backed power hub as one possible approach. That infrastructure guidance is not a guarantee that mobile service will remain available during a power cut at your venue. Test the connection you intend to rely on.
Keep a viewer-accessible backup link
NIC advises users of its government webcast service to retain the YouTube link as a backup option for signal issues. For a church, keeping the stream URL readily available can help viewers access the stream if a replacement or alternate stream is made available. A link does not keep the church’s equipment powered or provide network failover; it is a way to direct viewers to an available stream.

Know which bandwidth guidance applies
NIC’s current online guidance gives a requirement of 2–4 Mbps dedicated bandwidth per stream for its hired-agency webcast scenario. Its page does not state a publication year, and the figure is not a universal YouTube bitrate recommendation or a guarantee that a church connection will remain stable. Assess and test the church’s own connection under the actual streaming setup.

NIC also says to request its webcast service at least two working days before an event. That lead time applies to NIC’s government webcast service, not to an ordinary self-operated church livestream.
Troubleshoot a stream that stops during load shedding

Keep copyright and YouTube rules in view
A continuous stream still needs content the church has the right to broadcast. Check that the church has permission for music, recordings, images, and other material in its videos; a religious setting does not itself establish those rights. YouTube’s live-stream requirements and enforcement can affect a stream independently of its power and internet setup. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting guidelines cited for television-channel uplinking and downlinking concern that broadcast context and should not be treated as general rules for an ordinary church internet livestream.
