Vanguard began moving applications, systems, and data to public cloud in 2016, according to the company. Its cloud program has been a multiyear modernization effort, not a single migration event: the firm describes replacing decades-old infrastructure and says it reduced infrastructure costs by 30%. Those figures are Vanguard’s own reports; the company’s 2026 retrospective does not provide a detailed measurement method.
How Vanguard approached its cloud migration
Vanguard says its migration to public cloud began in 2016 and involved applications, systems, and data. The company describes the work as a multiyear modernization that replaced infrastructure built over decades, rather than a direct move of every existing system in one step. Its 2026 retrospective reports a 30% reduction in infrastructure costs, but does not explain the calculation or provide an independent assessment of the result.

How cloud governance affected the transition
Moving systems to cloud also required Vanguard to address how teams could use third-party services safely. In a 2022 presentation, the company described its approval process as manual and cumbersome: teams sometimes skipped it, while others could wait months. The presentation identifies platform, security, legal, audit, and business-demand considerations as part of the governance challenge. It does not establish that these delays were eliminated or quantify how the process changed.

In an undated corporate transcript, Vanguard CIO Nitin Tandon said that 85% of the company’s systems had moved to cloud. Because the page is undated, the figure should be read as a statement made at an unspecified time, not as a current 2026 measurement. Tandon also said cloud architecture supports trading, advice, and 401(k) recordkeeping.

How Vanguard modernized its trading platform
An AWS-hosted Vanguard presentation offers one technical example: rebuilding a mission-critical trading application. It names Amazon Aurora, DynamoDB, Fargate, and ECS, and frames agility, scalability, resilience, and lower total cost of ownership as design goals. The presentation describes Vanguard’s architecture and objectives; it is not an independent evaluation of whether those goals were achieved or a comparison with other cloud providers.

What the public account establishes—and what it does not
- Established by Vanguard’s account: public-cloud migration began in 2016; the effort spanned multiple years; and the company reports a 30% infrastructure-cost reduction in its 2026 retrospective.
- Time qualification: Vanguard’s 85% cloud-migration figure comes from an undated CIO transcript, so it cannot be treated as a dated current status.
- Not established: the detailed methodology behind the cost reduction, independent verification of the reported outcomes, or a like-for-like comparison of cloud vendors.
