In Windows 10 and 11, right-click an empty part of the desktop and choose View, then select Large icons, Medium icons, or Small icons. On a Mac, open View > Show View Options in desktop icon view and adjust Icon size. Windows applies its size controls to the desktop icons as a group; macOS also lets you adjust grid spacing and label text separately.
Change desktop icon size in Windows 11 or Windows 10
- Right-click an empty area of the desktop.
- Select View.
- Choose Large icons, Medium icons, or Small icons.
To adjust the size more gradually, click the desktop, hold down Ctrl, and scroll the mouse wheel up or down. Microsoft Support documents this as a way to make desktop icons larger or smaller. Both methods resize the desktop icon set together.

The same View menu includes Show desktop icons. Turning that option off hides the icons; it does not change their size.
Change desktop icon size on a Mac
- Click the desktop, or open the Finder window whose icons you want to adjust.
- Make sure the location is in icon view.
- Choose View > Show View Options.
- Move the Icon size control to the desired size.
In the same view options, you can change grid spacing—the distance between icons—and label text size independently of the icon graphic. The controls available can depend on the Finder view.

Can you resize just one desktop icon?
Windows 11 does not provide a built-in control to size one desktop icon or shortcut independently. Its preset choices and Ctrl-plus-wheel adjustment affect the desktop icons as a group.
If one shortcut needs to stand out, practical alternatives include changing its icon to a distinctive image, renaming or repositioning it, or enlarging all desktop icons. These make the shortcut easier to find but do not give it an independent size setting.

Make icons easier to see without changing only their size
If the problem is small labels or hard-to-read interface text, changing text size or display scaling may help more than resizing icons. Those settings can affect other parts of the interface as well, while the Windows desktop icon controls and the Mac Icon size control target the icon graphics more directly.
