UV printing is a digital inkjet process: a printer lays down liquid ink, then ultraviolet (UV) energy cures it into a solid film. It can be used on materials including plastic, glass, metal, coated paper, film, and wood. But a printer’s ability to put ink on a surface does not guarantee that the ink will bond well or last. The specific substrate, ink, surface preparation, and intended use all matter.
How UV printing works
In digital UV inkjet printing, printheads deposit tiny droplets of specially formulated ink onto a material. The printed area then passes under a UV light source. Compounds in the ink called photoinitiators absorb the UV energy and start a chemical reaction that links the ink’s molecules into a crosslinked solid film. This process is called curing.

Unlike conventional printing inks that may dry by evaporation or soak into a porous surface, UV ink cures through this light-triggered reaction. A cured print can often move promptly to handling or finishing, although actual production and handling depend on the printer, ink, and application. FUJIFILM’s guide to UV inkjet printing explains the process and the components that shape ink performance.
Why UV ink formulations differ
UV ink is not one universal formula. Oligomers help determine the cured film’s mechanical properties; monomers influence viscosity and flexibility; photoinitiators start curing; and pigments and additives provide color and other performance characteristics. These choices affect how an ink behaves, including its adhesion, flexibility, and resistance. An ink that works on one material or printer may not be suitable for another. Mimaki’s overview of UV ink describes these general ink components.

UV lamps and LEDs
UV printers may use mercury arc lamps or UV LEDs. FUJIFILM notes that LEDs emit narrower wavelength bands and typically produce less heat than conventional arc lamps. The light source must still match the ink’s chemistry and the printer’s operating conditions: LED curing is not automatically compatible with every UV ink.
Which materials can UV printers print on?
UV printing is used with a range of rigid and flexible materials. Common substrate families include:
Rank #2
- Fast printing speed: 6090 UV Printer with XP600 print head, the fastest speed can print 16m² in 1 hour, making your work efficiency one step faster. Up to 3 print heads can be installed, 3 print heads with large platform greatly improves the printing efficiency by 6 times or above. With a negative pressure function of the ink sac, it's a good solution for saving ink and the printing effect will be more delicate.
- High Quality Screw Slide Track Using high-quality steel slide rail structure, compared with the traditional belt slide rail, the service life is longer, and it will not slip like a belt, making production more worry-free
- White ink automatic circulation It will automatically circulate the white ink within 30 seconds to avoid ink precipitation and clogging, and prolong the life of the print head.
- Automatic Wiping and Moisturizing System Automatic wash the printhead when the machine is turned on and keep it wet when turned off to protect printhead blocking when it's not used and after printing .
- The damaged ink contact parts (includes printhead) not warranty; Easy Operation, User Manual and Operation Video sending together with the machine. Remote Assistance and backup software is available.
- Plastics: acrylic, polycarbonate, PVC, and other plastic sheets or objects.
- Metal: metal surfaces and products, subject to the printer, ink, and surface finish.
- Glass: glass surfaces, with adhesion dependent on the particular glass and preparation.
- Paper and board: coated papers and boards.
- Films: flexible packaging films and other film substrates.
- Wood: wood products, whose finish and surface condition can affect results.
These are broad material categories, not a compatibility guarantee for every grade, coating, finish, or printer. FUJIFILM’s material overview and Mimaki’s description of UV printing cover printing on non-absorbent materials such as plastic, glass, and metal.
Why ink adhesion can fail
A printer may deposit and cure ink successfully even when the resulting film does not bond securely to the material. Weak adhesion can leave a print vulnerable to peeling, scratching, or abrasion. Surface energy, cleanliness, composition, finish, surface treatment, and ink chemistry can all affect the bond. Smooth surfaces can be especially challenging; HP’s guidance for its Scitex FB500 and FB700 printers cautions that performance depends on media properties and notes the challenge of smoother media.

Surface preparation and treatment
Dust, oil, grease, release agents, and other contaminants can interfere with bonding. Some plastics with low surface energy may need pretreatment or an adhesion promoter. For example, HP’s guidance for the Scitex FB500/700 family specifies corona treatment for fluted polypropylene such as Coroplast to improve adhesion. That is specific to the cited printer family and material—not a universal instruction for all UV printing.
A dyne-level kit or test pens can help screen a surface’s energy, as discussed in Printing Industries of America’s guide to UV printing adhesion. A dyne reading alone does not prove that a print will adhere or endure its intended use.

How to check whether a material will work
- Identify the exact substrate. Record its material, coating, finish, and supplier specification. “Plastic” or “metal” alone may not be enough to identify a suitable ink or preparation method.
- Check the printer and ink guidance. Look for the manufacturer’s recommendations for that specific substrate and ink formulation.
- Prepare the surface as directed. Remove contamination and use a primer, corona treatment, or plasma treatment only when appropriate for the material and printing system.
- Use surface-energy testing as a screen, if useful. A dyne-level kit can provide a clue about the surface, but not a final pass/fail verdict on durability.
- Print and evaluate a sample. Use the actual printer, ink, and substrate. Check adhesion and the conditions the finished item will face, such as flexing, abrasion, chemical exposure, or weathering. Mimaki’s FAQ and HP’s media guidance advise checking intended materials rather than assuming compatibility.
If more than one substrate seems suitable, compare the exact options for ink adhesion after preparation, surface finish and cleanliness, required flexibility, likely exposure to abrasion or chemicals, and whether the printer maker recommends an appropriate ink or treatment. There is no universal ranking that makes one material family the best choice for every UV printer and application.
