Blizzard supports playing the campaign and dungeons alone, but its official descriptions do not establish that one class is easier or stronger for every solo player. Choose by the combat style you want—and check expansion access before choosing Spiritborn, Paladin, or Warlock.
Can you play Diablo IV solo?
Yes. Blizzard says you can explore the campaign at your own pace and find items without joining a group. Keyed dungeons can also be played individually or with groups of up to four. That makes solo play a supported way to experience the game, but it does not prove that every class performs equally well in every activity.

Choose by the combat style you enjoy
Rather than treating a class as a guaranteed shortcut for beginners, decide what kind of combat you want to spend time learning. Blizzard’s class descriptions offer these useful starting points:
| Class | Combat identity | Access requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Barbarian | Direct close-combat warrior. | Original base-game class. |
| Druid | Shapeshifting and nature powers. | Original base-game class. |
| Necromancer | Choose this if minions appeal; the cited official descriptions do not provide a detailed current beginner comparison. | Original base-game class. |
| Rogue | Choose this if agile attacks appeal; a more detailed current beginner comparison is not stated in the cited official descriptions. | Original base-game class. |
| Sorcerer | Elemental spellcasting. | Original base-game class. |
| Spiritborn | Mobile, close-range fighting, with Guardian Spirits—Jaguar, Gorilla, Eagle, and Centipede—selected through the Spirit Hall. | Requires Vessel of Hatred. |
| Paladin | Sword-and-shield defense and the Light. | Requires Lord of Hatred. |
| Warlock | Demon-commanding combat and infernal powers. | Requires Lord of Hatred. |
The original five classes are Barbarian, Druid, Necromancer, Rogue, and Sorcerer. Spiritborn arrived with Vessel of Hatred; Lord of Hatred added Paladin and Warlock. Both expansions require the Diablo IV base game. Check Blizzard’s current season page for the listed class requirements.

Which class should a beginner choose?
There is no official, current beginner-difficulty ranking for all eight classes in the cited Blizzard material. Use your preferred feel as the deciding factor:
- For a straightforward close-combat identity, consider Barbarian.
- If nature magic and changing forms sound enjoyable, consider Druid.
- If you would rather use elemental spells, consider Sorcerer.
- If minions are part of the appeal, look at Necromancer; the official sources cited here do not establish a comparative difficulty rating.
- If you want to investigate agile attacks, consider Rogue, without assuming that agility automatically makes a class easier.
- If mobile close-range combat and choosing among Guardian Spirits appeal, consider Spiritborn, provided you own Vessel of Hatred.
- If a sword-and-shield identity fits you, consider Paladin; if demon-commanding magic does, consider Warlock. Both require Lord of Hatred.
Blizzard’s descriptions explain class identities, not how quickly a new player will master them. For build and leveling guidance, Blizzard points players to community guide publishers including Maxroll, Icy Veins, Wowhead, PureDiablo, Mobalytics, and D4Builds. Check that any build guide matches your current season and patch.

Why class tier lists need a date
Class strength is not a timeless beginner recommendation. Blizzard says Lord of Hatred redesigned class skill trees across the game, and its patch notes dated September 30, 2026 include class-specific fixes. A tier list or build ranking can therefore become outdated as skills and balance change. Look for a guide that identifies the season or patch it covers instead of treating a ranking as permanent.
