In a typical bank-linked payment, the money stays in your bank account: your UPI ID is an address for sending or receiving money, your app is the interface, and your UPI PIN authorizes a transaction. A PIN is not needed to receive money.
What is UPI?
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) describes UPI as “an instant payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), an RBI regulated entity.” It was built over IMPS infrastructure and enables transfers between parties’ bank accounts. NPCI’s product materials describe UPI as a real-time inter-bank payment solution launched in 2016. NPCI UPI product overview · NPCI UPI FAQ

For an ordinary bank-linked UPI payment, the payer’s linked account is debited and the recipient’s account is credited when the transaction succeeds. UPI is therefore not a wallet balance by default. Some UPI arrangements also support linked prepaid payment instrument (PPI) wallets, subject to issuer and app support.
What are the UPI ID, bank account, app, and PIN?
| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
| UPI ID | A payment address, also called a Virtual Payment Address or Payment Address in NPCI material. An example format is xyz@upi; the handle varies by app or PSP. It points a payment toward a recipient, but is not where the money is stored. |
| Bank account | The account that is normally debited when you pay and credited when you receive a bank-linked payment. An app may let you link multiple accounts, and a UPI ID may be associated with accounts depending on the PSP’s features. |
| Payment app or PSP | The interface and service provider used to register, find eligible accounts, initiate payments, and show transaction status. BHIM is one NPCI-described example; it supports bank-to-bank payments, pay and collect using a mobile number or VPA, and switching among linked accounts. This does not establish that it is better than other apps. |
| UPI PIN | A 4–6 digit credential created during setup and used to authorize a transaction. NPCI distinguishes it from a bank-issued MPIN. Keep it secret; neither a recipient nor support agent needs it. |
NPCI’s FAQ says the mobile number verified in the app should match the number linked to the bank account for account discovery. If you switch apps, you may need to register again and may receive a new VPA handle; do not assume every app can carry an existing ID over unchanged. In addition to a UPI ID, an app may offer bank account number and IFSC as payment details.

How does a typical UPI payment work?
- Register and link an account. Use a participating UPI app or PSP and follow its setup flow. The verified phone number must match the number linked to your bank account for the app to fetch it, according to NPCI’s FAQ.
- Choose the recipient. Select a contact or merchant, scan a QR code, or enter a UPI ID. Check the recipient name and amount displayed before proceeding. A merchant QR can contain the merchant’s UPI ID and, where applicable, an amount.
- Authorize the payment. Enter your UPI PIN to approve the transaction. NPCI describes UPI as using one-click two-factor authentication under applicable RBI guidelines, with the UPI PIN as the second factor. A PIN prompt authorizes a transaction; it is not a step for receiving money.
- The instruction passes through UPI and participating banks. The app shows a status, and the beneficiary bank credits the recipient when processing succeeds. This is a high-level description; the cited NPCI materials do not specify every backend message or settlement step.
- Confirm the result. Both payer and recipient should check their app or bank account. If the payer is debited but the recipient is not credited, inspect the transaction status and use the app or bank’s complaint channel rather than assuming the payment completed.
Is UPI available around the clock, and can payments fail?
NPCI describes UPI as an instant payment system and says transfers are not limited to banking hours. That does not mean every individual payment will complete instantly: a network, bank, or beneficiary-side issue can cause a failure or pending status. NPCI says reversals are provided for declined transactions and advises contacting the bank if an expected reversal is delayed. It does not establish one resolution time that applies to every bank and case.
What are the UPI transaction limits?
NPCI’s FAQ lists these ceilings. They are not a promise that every bank or app will allow the maximum; category eligibility, provider limits, and current rules can affect the amount available to you.

| Transaction category | NPCI FAQ limit |
|---|---|
| Normal UPI transaction | Up to ₹1 lakh per transaction |
| Specified categories, including capital markets, collections, insurance, and foreign inward remittances | Up to ₹2 lakh per transaction |
| IPO and Retail Direct Scheme transactions | Up to ₹5 lakh per transaction |
Check the applicable category and your bank or app’s current limit before relying on these figures. NPCI’s FAQ is the source for the limits above; a headline ceiling should not be treated as universal.
How can you use UPI safely?
- Check the payee name and amount before authorizing.
- Never share your UPI PIN. NPCI says bank customer support will not ask for it.
- Treat a PIN request as approval to send money, not as a way to accept or receive it.
- If a payment is pending or your account is debited without a matching credit, check the status and raise a complaint through the app or participating bank. Avoid retrying until you understand the status, since a second attempt could create another payment.
- If your phone or SIM is lost, contact your mobile provider to block the number and promptly contact your bank or app provider. A device or application change may require re-registration.
Does UPI work outside India?
Not everywhere. NPCI describes UPI Global Acceptance for QR payments at select international merchant locations, using Indian bank accounts through enabled apps. Availability depends on the country, merchant, bank, account, and app. Before authorizing, check the amount shown in both local and Indian currency, along with the exchange rate and any fees.

There is no comparative ranking established by the NPCI materials cited here. Instead, check whether the app supports your bank and account, and whether it offers the functions you need, such as QR payments, collect requests, linked accounts, transaction history, and a clear complaint route. Also consider usability, accessibility, and the support available from the app provider and bank. NPCI’s BHIM listing establishes its stated functions, not that it is the best choice for every user.
