The main difference is not that the Marine Corps and Navy operate completely separate kinds of aircraft. It is how each service uses aviation. Marine aviation is built to support the Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF) and expeditionary operations, while Navy aviation is organized primarily around carrier air wings deployed with conventional aircraft carriers and carrier strike groups.
That distinction affects where aircraft can operate, how they launch and recover, and which missions they perform. The clearest example is the F-35B and F-35C: the Marine Corps uses the short-takeoff-and-vertical-landing F-35B for amphibious ships and austere bases, while Navy and Marine units use the carrier-optimized F-35C from conventional aircraft carriers.

Marine and Navy aircraft are separated mainly by mission and operating concept
Marine Corps fighter aviation exists to keep the MAGTF effective as a combined force. A MAGTF brings together ground, aviation, logistics and command elements, so Marine pilots are expected to support operations that may begin from a ship, move ashore and continue from temporary or damaged airfields. The aircraft are therefore selected and deployed for flexibility close to Marines on the ground.

“The F-35B/C is Marine Aviation’s critical capability that enables the MAGTF and Joint Force mission globally.”
This institutional description from the Marine Corps Deputy Commandant for Aviation captures why a Marine fighter cannot be judged only by its air-to-air performance. Its ability to deploy with Marines, operate from amphibious ships or limited runways, and connect with joint forces is part of its purpose.
What the services operate: overlapping fleets, different responsibilities
| Comparison point | Marine Corps aviation | Navy aviation |
|---|---|---|
| Primary framework | MAGTF and expeditionary operations supporting Marines ashore and afloat | Carrier air wing and carrier strike group operations |
| Typical operating locations | Amphibious assault ships, expeditionary bases, land bases and limited-runway sites | Conventional aircraft carriers, shore bases and joint operating locations |
| Representative fighter variants | F-35B STOVL fighter; F-35C carrier variant; legacy AV-8B and F/A-18 aircraft during transition | F-35C and F/A-18E/F carrier fighters, alongside other specialized aircraft |
| Other aviation functions | Fighter-attack, close support and aviation capabilities integrated with Marine ground forces | Electronic attack, airborne command and control, helicopters, strike, fighter and logistics missions |
| Relationship with the other service | Can operate from Navy amphibious ships and integrate with carrier aviation | Provides the ships and carrier air-wing structure used in many joint operations |
The table describes operating models, not an absolute ownership rule. The services share aircraft types, train together and can deploy on one another’s ships. A Marine aircraft on a Navy ship is an example of integration, not proof that Marine and Navy aviation have identical missions.

Short takeoff and vertical landing
The Marine Corps F-35B is the short-takeoff-and-vertical-landing (STOVL) version of the Joint Strike Fighter. It can use a short deck or runway and recover vertically when the operating situation requires it. That allows a Marine unit to fly from an amphibious assault ship or from a limited-runway location where a conventional carrier aircraft could not launch and recover independently.

STOVL does not mean the F-35B is restricted to vertical takeoffs. Depending on the ship, runway, payload and operating plan, it can make a short takeoff to carry useful fuel and weapons, then use vertical landing procedures when appropriate. The important operational benefit is the ability to function without the catapults and arresting gear fitted to a large conventional aircraft carrier.
Supporting Marines from closer locations
An F-35B detachment can be positioned closer to a Marine force than a carrier air wing may be able to operate. Dispersed or expeditionary locations can complicate an adversary’s targeting problem and shorten the distance between the aircraft and the ground unit it supports. The trade-off is that austere sites require careful planning for fuel, weapons, maintenance, spare parts, personnel and protection.
Shipboard examples
Marine F-35Bs have operated aboard Navy amphibious assault ships, including USS Wasp and USS Tripoli. In a 2022 Lightning Carrier demonstration aboard Tripoli, 20 F-35B aircraft were reported. That number describes the aircraft participating in that event; it is not a current Marine Corps fleet total.
These deployments show how Navy ships provide a platform for Marine aviation while the Marine unit supplies a STOVL capability tailored to expeditionary operations. The ship remains a Navy asset, but the aircraft and its squadron are employed to support Marine and joint objectives.

How the F-35C differs from the F-35B
| Feature | F-35B | F-35C |
|---|---|---|
| Takeoff and landing concept | Short takeoff and vertical landing | Conventional carrier launch and arrested recovery |
| Primary ship compatibility | Amphibious assault ships and other suitable short-deck operations | Large conventional aircraft carriers equipped for catapult launch and arrested recovery |
| Marine Corps role | Expeditionary fighter-attack capability for MAGTF operations | Carrier-oriented fighter that lets Marine squadrons operate in a carrier air wing |
| Service operators | Marine Corps | U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps |
| Land-based use | Can operate from limited-runway or expeditionary locations | Can operate from land bases as well as carriers when the base supports the aircraft |
The F-35C is not a Navy-exclusive aircraft. Marine Corps units also operate it. A Marine squadron transitioned from the F/A-18 to the F-35C and reported its first combat strikes with the aircraft in 2024. The transition gives the Marine Corps a fighter that can join a conventional carrier air wing while retaining Marine Corps command and employment responsibilities.
Conversely, the F-35B is not simply a smaller version of the F-35C. Their different landing and launch systems reflect different basing assumptions. Treating the two variants as interchangeable obscures the reason the Marine Corps maintains both expeditionary STOVL forces and carrier-capable units.
What is in a Navy carrier air wing besides fighters
“Navy aircraft” is broader than “Navy fighter jets.” Official Navy descriptions of a carrier air wing include several specialized categories:

- Fighter and strike aircraft: F-35C and F/A-18E/F aircraft provide air-to-air and strike capabilities.
- Electronic attack: EA-18G aircraft disrupt, deceive or suppress hostile sensors and communications.
- Airborne command and control: E-2D aircraft extend the carrier group’s radar picture and help coordinate aircraft and ships.
- Helicopters: MH-60 variants perform missions such as anti-submarine warfare, surface warfare, rescue and logistics support.
- Logistics aircraft: Carrier onboard delivery and other support aircraft move people, mail, parts and supplies between the carrier and shore.
Those roles make the carrier air wing a self-contained package rather than a collection of interchangeable fighters. A Navy carrier’s effectiveness depends on the way these aircraft share information and divide tasks. Comparing a Marine F-35B with the entire Navy aircraft inventory would therefore mix unlike categories.

Marine aviation’s wider aircraft mix
Marine aviation also includes more than fighter jets. Its aircraft support the ground force with air defense, strike, transport, reconnaissance, assault support and logistics. The exact squadron mix changes as older aircraft retire and new ones enter service.
The AV-8B Harrier has been a Marine V/STOL aircraft, while the F/A-18 has performed maritime strike and air-interdiction roles. Both are part of the historical path toward the F-35 fleet, but their presence in a particular unit depends on transition timing. A Marine aviation plan published in 2018 described the F-35B as an expeditionary STOVL fighter-attack platform and the F-35C as offering flexibility from conventional carriers or land bases. That language is useful for understanding the concepts, but it is a dated planning statement rather than a current force-structure report.
How Marine and Navy units work together
Marine F-35Bs on Navy amphibious ships
An amphibious assault ship can carry Marine aircraft and ground forces as part of an amphibious ready group. When F-35Bs operate from that ship, the Navy supplies the maritime platform and the Marine Corps supplies the aviation unit and expeditionary mission. The arrangement lets the force deliver airpower without depending on a conventional carrier’s catapults and arresting gear.

A Marine F-35C squadron can deploy with a conventional carrier air wing. Its pilots and maintainers use the carrier’s launch and recovery equipment while integrating into the wing’s strike, air-defense and information-sharing plan. This creates a direct bridge between Marine expeditionary aviation and Navy carrier aviation.

Joint command does not erase service roles
Shared ships, aircraft and missions can make the services look interchangeable from a distance. They are not. The Marine Corps organizes aviation around the needs of the MAGTF, while the Navy organizes carrier aviation around the carrier strike group and maritime control. Joint commanders may combine those capabilities, but the services retain different training, logistics and deployment priorities.
What has changed, and why old aircraft counts can mislead
Marine squadron transition status changes over time. Current Marine Corps Force Design material says F-35s have deployed both afloat and ashore and that the procurement profile has been updated to adjust the balance between F-35B and F-35C aircraft. It does not provide a complete, date-matched public inventory for every Marine and Navy model.
For that reason, a precise aircraft total should not be inferred from a demonstration, a squadron announcement or an older procurement plan. The 20-aircraft Tripoli event in 2022 was an exercise and demonstration figure. The 2018 aviation plan was a planning document. Neither should be presented as today’s operational inventory.

The available official material does not establish a standardized, current comparison for those measures across Marine and Navy aircraft, so a responsible comparison should focus on verified missions and operating methods instead.
How to identify the difference in practical terms
- Start with the base or ship. If the aircraft is designed around a conventional carrier’s catapults and arresting gear, it points to the F-35C or another carrier aircraft. If it is designed for an amphibious assault ship or limited runway, the F-35B’s STOVL concept is the relevant distinction.
- Ask what force the aircraft supports. A Marine aircraft is usually discussed as part of a MAGTF and its expeditionary ground mission. A Navy carrier aircraft is usually discussed as part of a carrier air wing and carrier strike group.
- Separate fighters from support aircraft. F-35C and F/A-18E/F are fighters, but EA-18G, E-2D, MH-60 and logistics aircraft perform different jobs in the same Navy air wing.
- Check the service operator, not just the aircraft name. The F-35C is operated by both the Navy and Marine Corps. A Marine squadron flying it may deploy on a carrier, while a Marine F-35B may deploy on a Navy amphibious ship.
- Check the date of any inventory claim. Procurement plans, transition announcements and exercise participation describe a moment in time, not necessarily the current fleet.
Bottom line for readers comparing the two services
Marine Corps fighter aviation is optimized for expeditionary support of the MAGTF, including operations from amphibious ships and austere bases. Navy aviation is organized around the carrier air wing, whose fighters operate alongside electronic-attack, command-and-control, helicopter and logistics aircraft. The F-35B and F-35C make the distinction easiest to see: the B brings STOVL flexibility to Marine operations, while the C uses conventional carrier launch and arrested recovery and is flown by both Navy and Marine units.
