By comparing how bright one appears with its calibrated intrinsic brightness—and correcting for dust—astronomers estimate its distance. Combining those distances with the host galaxies’ redshifts reveals how the universe expands.
Why Type Ia supernovae can act as distance markers
A Type Ia supernova is an exploding white dwarf. These events do not all have exactly the same brightness, but their peak intrinsic brightnesses are similar. Once astronomers calibrate the expected brightness, the observed brightness provides a way to estimate distance: an event that appears fainter is generally farther away, all else being equal.

NASA describes Type Ia supernovae as standard candles: events that emit a specific amount of light, allowing scientists to infer distance from how bright they appear. In practice, the method is not a calibration-free formula. Astronomers must establish the intrinsic brightness and account for effects that alter the light on its way to Earth. Calibrate the intrinsic brightness
Astronomers first need to know how bright a supernova is intrinsically, rather than relying only on how bright it looks from Earth. The calibration is built by linking the supernova method to distance measurements that are reliable at nearer scales.

Estimate and correct for dust
Dust between a supernova and our telescopes absorbs and scatters some of its light, making the event appear fainter. If that dimming were mistaken for distance alone, the inferred distance would be too large. NASA describes using observations of the same supernova in ultraviolet and infrared: ultraviolet light is nearly blocked by dust, while infrared passes through it much more easily. Comparing wavelengths helps estimate the dust’s effect and improve the brightness-distance calibration. NASA’s Hubble explanation
Compare observed and expected brightness
After calibration and dust correction, astronomers compare the supernova’s apparent brightness with its inferred intrinsic brightness to estimate its distance. That distance is an inference, not a direct geometric measurement of the supernova’s location.

How supernovae fit into the cosmic distance ladder
No single distance method works equally well across every scale. The distance ladder links methods: nearby measurements calibrate the next step, which then reaches farther. NASA describes parallax as a geometric calibration for nearby Cepheids. Cepheids in more distant galaxies that also hosted Type Ia supernovae help calibrate supernova luminosities. Because Type Ia supernovae are much brighter than Cepheids, they can serve as distance markers in still more distant galaxies. NASA LAMBDA’s distance-ladder overview
- Parallax establishes nearby distances. The geometric measurements calibrate nearby Cepheid variable stars.
- Cepheids extend the calibration. Cepheids in galaxies that have hosted Type Ia supernovae help establish the supernovae’s intrinsic brightness.
- Type Ia supernovae reach farther. Their high luminosity makes them visible in more distant galaxies, extending the distance scale.
Each link depends on calibration and careful control of observational systematics. Similar peak brightness is useful, but it does not make every event interchangeable or remove the need to check for sources of error. NASA LAMBDA

How distances and redshifts reveal cosmic expansion
Once astronomers estimate distances to supernova host galaxies, they compare those distances with the galaxies’ redshifts—the stretching of light associated with cosmic expansion. This relationship helps measure the present expansion rate, called the Hubble constant. Supernova distances therefore contribute to a local-universe measurement whose reliability depends on the distance-ladder calibration.
NASA’s Hubble-tension explainer reports space-telescope Hubble-constant estimates of roughly 70–76 kilometers per second per megaparsec, compared with roughly 67–68 kilometers per second per megaparsec for estimates derived from the cosmic microwave background (CMB), the early universe’s remnant light. These are ranges summarized by NASA, not one harmonized or settled value. The difference is known as the Hubble tension, and NASA says it remains unresolved. NASA’s Hubble-tension explainer

What distant supernovae revealed about dark energy
In the late 1990s, observations of distant Type Ia supernovae found them dimmer than expected in models without accelerating expansion. Their inferred distances, considered alongside their redshifts, provided direct evidence that the universe’s expansion is accelerating. The unexplained phenomenon associated with that acceleration is called dark energy. NASA LAMBDA notes that the evidence came from supernova samples at redshifts below 1. NASA LAMBDA
What NASA’s Roman mission plans to add
NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is planned to observe thousands of distant Type Ia supernovae to trace cosmic expansion over time and investigate dark energy. NASA describes a projected reach spanning more than half of the universe’s history. These are mission goals and projected survey capabilities, not completed observations or results.
