They isolated the forms as blue and orange crystals. Their structures, spectroscopic signatures and calculated electronic properties supported the distinction; the color difference was linked to different LUMO energies. The finding clarified an unusual kind of molecular structure, but did not demonstrate a better-performing catalyst.
What the two colors revealed
The blue and orange crystals contained agostic isomers of the same molybdenum cation, [CpMo(CO)2(PiPr3)]+, paired with the weakly coordinating anion B(C6F5)4−. The forms were not unrelated compounds, and the colors alone were not the evidence for their assignment.

An agostic interaction occurs when a carbon–hydrogen bond interacts weakly with a metal center. Agostic isomers, sometimes called agostomers, have different C–H bonds making that interaction with the same metal-containing complex. The different interactions can give the forms distinct structures and electronic properties.

The primary paper linked the blue-versus-orange color difference to significantly different energies of the molecules’ lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals, or LUMOs. Color was a visible clue to an electronic difference, not a stand-alone structural test.

Why crystallization made the pair observable
According to Chemistry World’s account of the work, the two forms interconverted rapidly in solution, making it difficult to isolate them separately. Crystallization changed what could be examined: once each form was incorporated into a crystal, that switching was no longer an obstacle to distinguishing the solid structures.
The team encountered the orange and blue crystals while studying molybdenum complexes in a hydrogenation-catalyst context. The report identifies crystallization of an intermediate after phosphine abstraction as crucial. Both forms were present in significant amounts in solution and each yielded a single crystal suitable for diffraction, according to Morris Bullock, who led the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory team.

The result also has a practical qualification: crystallization need not reveal every form present in a solution. Bullock noted that other agostic complexes might have several agostomers in solution even when only one crystallizes. The observation therefore establishes that this pair could be isolated and structurally distinguished, not that crystallography will always capture every isomer in a mixture.

What the discovery does—and does not—say about catalysis
The work arose in a catalytic setting. Chemistry World reported Bullock’s explanation that catalytic runs showed saturated, 18-electron organometallic species, while several lines of evidence suggested that 16-electron species could be involved in the catalytic cycle as fleeting intermediates. An agostic C–H interaction can help stabilize an unsaturated metal complex by temporarily engaging a vacant site, which makes such structures relevant to discussions of reaction mechanisms.

That context is not evidence that the isolated crystals improved hydrogenation or any other catalytic process. The reported result is a structural and electronic discovery: isolation and characterization of two agostic forms of one cation. The primary-paper record and Chemistry World report do not establish industrial performance, scale-up, or a commercial application.
