Cicada wings appear to kill some bacteria mainly through their nanoscale surface structure, not by releasing an antibiotic-like chemical. The wing material is reported to be primarily chitin; the proposed bactericidal action comes from physical contact with tiny surface pillars that can deform or damage bacterial cells. The effect depends on the cicada and bacteria tested, and the precise damage mechanism is still being studied.
What is the “chemistry” behind cicada wings killing bacteria?
The key distinction is between what a wing is made of and how it affects bacteria. A 2026 study describes the wing surface material as primarily chitin and reports that chemical characterization alongside antibacterial assays supports a physical, rather than chemical, killing mechanism. The evidence does not establish that the wing secretes an antibiotic or carries a proven antimicrobial chemical coating. The study’s findings point instead to the nanoscale architecture of the surface.

Researchers have observed ordered nanopillars and related nanoscale protrusions on cicada wings using techniques including atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. When bacteria contact such a surface, the topography may impose mechanical stress on their cells. The wing’s composition and its surface geometry are therefore separate parts of the explanation: chitin is the reported material, while the arrangement of its surface features is implicated in contact damage.
How might the nanopillars damage a bacterial cell?
Several physical processes have been proposed. A bacterium may adhere to the sides of pillars and deform or stretch as it settles across them. The resulting stress may rupture the cell envelope. Some accounts also propose that pillar tips penetrate cells or that movement across the surface creates shear damage. These are proposed mechanisms, not a single process proven to explain every species and test condition. A 2020 review of nanopillar surfaces discusses the range of mechanisms and the variables that can affect them. Its analysis cautions against treating one explanation as universal.

- SUPER-SLICK, ANTI-STICK, & ULTRA HYDROPHOBIC -- Lifeproof Home gives surfaces that super-slick, clean glass feeling, repelling liquids, stains, and other unwanted elements. DO NOT USE ON FLOORS due to super slick properties.
- MULTI-SURFACE SAFE -- Lifeproof Home is invisible and safe to use on nearly any hard surface including granite counters, stainless steel, appliances, laminate, marble, glass, metal, tile, porcelain, stone, painted cabinets, coriander, and many other home, kitchen, & bath surfaces.
- NON-TOXIC COATING -- Rest easy knowing your surfaces are protected in a non-toxic coating. Lifeproof Home has passed MTT Cytotoxicity testing.
- EASY SPRAY APPLICATION -- Starting with a cleaned surface, simply spray on desired surface, buff in with included microfiber towel, flip towel and remove any residue. Let cure (wait 1 hour for dry use, 4 hours for wet). Lifeproof Home coating can be removed anytime with Isopropyl alcohol. For best results, ensure surface is cleaned thoroughly before application.
In a 2012 online study of *Psaltoda claripennis*, the authors described the wing as “the first example of a new class of biomaterials that can kill bacteria on contact based solely on its physical surface structure.” That statement refers to the researchers’ findings for the species and conditions they tested; it is not evidence that all cicada wings kill all bacteria.
Do cicada wings kill every kind of bacteria?
No. Results vary with the cicada species, bacterial species, assay conditions and what researchers measure. In the *P. claripennis* study, the tested Gram-negative species were consistently killed, while the tested Gram-positive species remained resistant under the reported assay conditions. A separate 2015-online study of three other cicada species found bacterial coverage on all three wings, but two species had substantially higher dead-to-live ratios. Coverage indicates how much of a surface bacteria occupy; it is not the same as the proportion killed. The study illustrates why attachment and viability results should not be conflated.

- CREATES AN INVISIBLE SHIELD ON TREATED SURFACES that inhibits the growth of microorganisms and helps prevent the growth and spread of bacteria for up to 3 months, antimicrobial fabric spray for long-lasting surface safety.
- KEEPS INDOOR AND OUTDOOR SURFACES of almost any type and material mold, mildew, algae and fungi free for up to 3 months using anti mold spray protection and durable surface care.
- WATERPROOF, WEATHERPROOF AND WON’T wash or wear off with normal maintenance or cleaning, ensuring lasting performance even when used with mold and mildew spray applications.
- PROTECTS AGAINST AND INHIBITS the development of microbiologically induced corrosion, stains, fading and odors, providing reliable performance in areas like mold spray bathroom.
- COMPARE LABELS! Most antimicrobial products are ONLY effective on “Hard, NonPorous Surfaces” (i.e., floors & countertops), but SHIELD is antimicrobially effective on the things we touch most: “Soft Surfaces” (furniture, carpets, bedding, clothes, backpacks, etc.) and “Food Contact Surfaces” (anything used to prep, cook or consume food).
One reported result gives a sense of the specificity required when quoting a number: Hasan and colleagues reported that 6.1 ± 1.5 × 106 *Pseudomonas aeruginosa* cells per square centimeter were inactivated after 30 minutes in their assay. This figure belongs to that organism, wing and experimental setup; it is not a general killing rate for cicada wings. The study record summarizes the work.

A 2024 study of *A. cingulata* and *K. scutellaris* measured different pillar dimensions and water contact angles in the specimens examined. The averages below describe those studied samples, not universal values for either species or for cicadas as a group. The researchers also reported variation by sample and location, and called for more harmonized antibacterial testing. The study provides the measurements and qualifications.
| Species studied | Average nanopillar height | Mean center-to-center spacing | Water contact angle |
|---|---|---|---|
| A. cingulata | 251 nm | 164 nm | 165° |
| K. scutellaris | 241 nm | 175 nm | 147° |
Water contact angle describes how a droplet meets a surface; it is not an antibacterial measurement. Likewise, pillar height and spacing describe geometry, but by themselves do not tell how many bacteria will attach, remain viable or be inactivated. Those outcomes require distinct measurements, and study protocols are not yet fully standardized.

Researchers are exploring engineered surfaces inspired by natural nanotopography, including surfaces made from black silicon, titanium, titanium alloys and polymers. These are research directions, not proof that an intact cicada wing is a ready-to-use medical device or that a consumer product will prevent infection. Laboratory contact-killing results do not establish effectiveness or safety in people, nor do they show that the structures evolved specifically to kill bacteria. As the 2024 study notes, the structures’ biological function cannot be inferred simply from observing bacterial rupture.
