The bridged-isoindigo molecule links the rotors through a central core, and its cycle includes a previously unreported double metastable state. The finding demonstrates communication between the rotors, although exactly how that communication occurs remains unresolved.
What “communication” means in this molecular motor
In this context, communication is a chemical relationship between the motions of two rotor units—not a signal sent between separate devices. Carlijn L. F. van Beek and Ben L. Feringa designed a bridged-isoindigo structure whose central core connects two overcrowded-alkene rotor subunits through carbon–carbon double bonds. The reported behavior shows that changes in one rotor are linked to the other’s cycle rather than the two units rotating independently.

The authors describe the rotors’ directions as inherently coupled and disrotary: viewed from the molecule’s symmetry plane, they turn in opposite directions. Chemistry World explained the arrangement by analogy to gears, reporting that a conformational change in one rotor can affect the central core and the other rotor. That is a useful mechanistic interpretation of the observed coupling, not a settled account of every physical step. The authors’ paper in the Journal of the American Chemical Society presents the result as intrinsic coupled rotary motion.

How the linked rotation cycle works
The motor is driven by a sequence of light-induced and heat-driven changes. Photochemical E/Z isomerization changes the configuration around a double bond; thermal helix inversion then changes the molecule’s shape as it proceeds through the rotary cycle. The paper distinguishes stable and metastable rotor configurations and identifies a double metastable isomer outside the conventional sequence of steps.

Across a full 360-degree cycle, the authors report eight distinct species. This is the count for the cycle of this particular molecular motor, not a general count for molecular motors as a class. The double metastable state is significant because it connects the two rotor cycles in the reported design.
What evidence supports the finding
Van Beek and Feringa investigated the motor’s states and cycle with NMR and UV/visible spectroscopy. Fluorine NMR signals helped distinguish states. The paper also reports single-crystal X-ray analysis of two stable isomers; its supporting information includes photochemical and thermal experiments, kinetic analyses, crystal structures, and computational details. The article record and supporting information describe those methods.

Chemistry World reported that some spectroscopic measurements were conducted at temperatures as low as −110 °C to slow rapid rotation and make steps in the cycle easier to resolve. This is a detail from that account, not evidence of independent replication. Its report on the study also notes the uncertainty around the precise mechanism.

What the result establishes—and what it does not
The study establishes a specific example of coupled rotary motion in a synthetic, light-driven molecular motor, including a double metastable intermediate. It does not establish a complete microscopic explanation for how the rotors influence one another. Chemistry World’s 2024 account says the exact explanation remained elusive despite experimental and computational work.

This is fundamental chemistry research, not a motor-sized device for everyday use or a demonstrated commercial application. The authors frame the result as a basis for designing more advanced artificial molecular machines. It is a step toward understanding and engineering molecular motion, not proof that such machines are ready for practical deployment.
