How Nanocrystals Can Stop Blinking

Core-shell designs can make nanocrystal emission steadier, but stable brightness does not prove that charge state or emission lifetime has stopped changing.

Nanocrystals can be engineered to blink less by changing their structure or surface so that fewer excited charges are lost without emitting light. Thick core-shell designs, for example, can suppress a major non-radiative loss pathway. But “nonblinking” usually means that a particular experiment recorded steady light intensity—not that the nanocrystal stopped changing internally.

What blinking means in a nanocrystal

Quantum-dot blinking is the random change in light output from a single nanocrystal under illumination: it switches between brighter and dimmer states, sometimes going dark. It is different from a change in the average brightness of a bulk sample, where many particles contribute to the measurement.

One widely discussed explanation involves charging. A nanocrystal can gain or lose a carrier; when charged, it may release excitation energy through non-radiative Auger recombination instead of emitting a photon. Reviews also describe surface-related states that can intercept an excited carrier before it reaches the light-emitting state. The mechanisms and their relative importance vary with material and conditions, so no single explanation accounts for every blinking event. See Efros and Nesbitt’s 2016 review and the 2025 review by Yang and colleagues.

How researchers suppress blinking

Researchers tune a nanocrystal’s architecture and surface to reduce the processes that interrupt emission. These are distinct strategies: modifying a core-shell structure can change charge confinement and recombination, while surface treatments and ligands address surface-related effects.

Core-shell structures

In a core-shell nanocrystal, one semiconductor forms the light-emitting core and another surrounds it. Adjusting this structure can soften carrier confinement and reduce Auger losses. A review of heterostructure strategies identifies three structural approaches: alloying at the core-shell interface, using thick or “giant” shells, and selecting type-II electronic structures. These designs target different aspects of charge confinement and recombination; they are not interchangeable recipes. See Hollingsworth’s 2013 review.

Thick-shell CdSe/CdS as an example

Thick-shell CdSe/CdS nanocrystals are a reported example of this approach. The core-shell confinement potential is softened, and non-radiative Auger processes are strongly suppressed. That is evidence for a particular material design, not a guarantee that every thick shell—or every nanocrystal composition—will eliminate blinking under all conditions. The design is discussed in Hollingsworth’s review.

Surface and ligand approaches

Surface modifications and ligand-mediated effects form a separate route to steadier emission. They should not be described as the same mechanism as thick-shell engineering: they address the nanocrystal’s surface rather than simply changing the core-shell confinement. The relevant reviews discuss surface-mediated effects alongside structural strategies, while recognizing that the operative mechanism depends on the system.

What “nonblinking” does—and does not—show

Stable intensity is not proof that all internal dynamics have stopped. In a primary study of ultra-thick-shell CdSe/CdS nanocrystals, emission intensity remained stable even as emission lifetime changed markedly. The authors interpreted this as switching between neutral and negatively charged states, with suppressed Auger decay preventing the usual intensity drop. In other words, intensity blinking can be suppressed while charge switching and lifetime blinking remain. See “Lifetime blinking in nonblinking nanocrystal quantum dots” (2012).

When assessing a claim that a nanocrystal is nonblinking, the measurement matters. Intensity tracking tests whether brightness fluctuates; lifetime measurements can reveal changes that intensity alone misses. The composition, architecture, and experimental conditions also matter: a result demonstrated in one design cannot automatically be generalized to all nanocrystals.
